Busy day today

I spent a few hours in meetings this afternoon. I'd tell you what those meetings were about but it would bore the crap out of you so I'll just move on.


The Red Sox managed to win last night and are now 1.5 games ahead of the Orioles. They are still 3 games behind the Yankees but knowing that things will change over the next few weeks means I can hope that they will close that gap.

As it stands right now, they are in a competitive position but I have one major concern - they have activated Sandoval from the DL and, in my humble opinion, he is not the best third baseman in the league.

Fortunately, tonight Sandoval is playing as a DH and Marrero, the guy who hit two home runs last night, remains at third.

They really need to win tonight

As it stands right now, the Red Sox are holding on to second place in the ALEast by half a game over the Orioles. The Yankees are playing the Orioles tonight so if the Orioles win and the Red Sox lose, they will slip back into third place.

I would like them to both win. That way the Red Sox will maintain their half game lead over the Orioles and close the gap on the first place Yankees.


I have one thing to say to all the media-types that are yapping about Jared Kushner setting up "back channel communications" with the Russians - SHUT UP YOU IDIOTS!

During the Cuban Missile crisis back in 1962, the Kennedy administration also set up back channel communications with the Russians. That communication eventually turned into the now famous hot line between the White House and the Kremlin.

No one was yammering about that back then. As a matter of fact, it was considered smart to have a dialogue with a foreign power.


Tonight's ball game starts at 8:00 so I'll have to watch bad television until then.

They needed the win

David Price made his much anticipated season start against the White Sox today and managed to take the Red Sox into the 5th inning with a lead.

Then the bullpen took over and they ended up losing the game.

Since the Orioles beat the Yankees today, the Red Sox have remain 3 games behind the Yankees but only a half game ahead of the Orioles.

They need to win tomorrow.


I've been watching some woodworking videos and one of the items that a lot of guys make themselves is a crosscut sled for their table saw. One of my favorite guys is Izzy Swan. He made two crosscut sleds, one that is a simple 90° cut and another that has two opposing 45° legs.

I've decided I need both of those so I guess I'll be doing some woodwork this week.

They needed to win...

The Red Sox managed to lose the final game against the Mariners which is too bad. I was kind of hoping they would move a bit closer to first place today.

Oh well.

Fortunately, the Orioles lost as well so they remain in second place.

They're next game is tomorrow in Chicago against the White Sox.


I got the backyard (or as I like to call it, the dogs latrine) cleaned up & mowed and my wife continued working on her gardens. She and my daughter have been cleaning them out and freshening them up so they look nice.

They discovered a starlings nest in one of the bushes along the side of the house.

If you are not aware, starlings are very loud and proud singers. The male has been singing around our our house for the last few weeks and now it looks like we can expect a clutch of loud and proud babies.

I expect some early morning wake-ups this summer.

Lawn is mowed.

I managed to get my lawn mowed today and my wife managed to get her gardens cleared out.

As she said, "Now it looks like someone lives here."

I always figured the cars in the driveway and the people wandering around were an indication that someone lived here but I guess she figures it's the lawn and gardens that make it look lived in.


The Red Sox swept the Mariners today but the Yankees also won today so the Red Sox remain two games out of first place in the ALEast.

They are a full game ahead of the Orioles. The Orioles are playing the Astros tonight and if they win, they will be a half game behind the Red Sox. If they lose, the Red Sox will be a game and a half ahead of them.

I'm watching that game and as I type this, it's the seventh inning and the Astros are up 4-2.

My man Moose is officially retired.

I've been friends with Moose since the early 80's and I can tell you that he is a great guy.

The last time I saw him was at Johns retirement party.

Seems like a lot of my friends are retiring...


It's raining again but I'm not complaining. After what we went through last year, I've become a fan of rain.

Right about this time of the year last year, we all started noticing the lack of rain and our lawns started getting a little crunchy.

I hate a crunchy lawn.


The Red Sox have now won four in a row and are on track to overtake the currently-flailing Orioles and capture second place in the ALEast.

Tonight they will be playing the Mariners who are pretty much tied for last place in the American League. I would like to say that's a good thing for the Red Sox but after their performance against the Athletics, who are just a tetch above last place, I'm not willing to predict a sweep.

Hell, I'll be happy if they take two of the three games.

As for the weather, there is a 15% chance of rain in Boston which is better than yesterday when they basically played in the rain.


The other day I was walking through Costco down in Enfield to price out inkjet cartridges and when I passed by the photo processing counter I glanced down at a display they had for a graduation photo autograph board.

I couldn't help but notice the steely gaze of the gentleman in the background wearing the Central High T-Shirt so I stopped and looked closer.

Can they win 4 in a row?

There is a better than 50% chance of showers all evening in Boston so they might not be playing baseball. If they don't play, it's going to make for an interesting make-up schedule since this is the only trip the Rangers are making to Boston this season.

The closest they come to Boston with a day off is a two-game series against the Mets in August. That series has two travel days built into it, one before and one after. Other than that, they aren't in the area with any day's off for the remainder of the season.

I suspect they will try their hardest to get this game in tonight but it's gonna be a wet one.


I've been reading about these two guys, Greg Gianforte and Ben Jacobs. Seems they had a little tussle this morning when Gianforte, a candidate for  congress from Montana, decided that Jacobs, a reporter for The Guardian, was an asshole and he tossed him to the floor.

I've heard the words "body slam" and "fell" used to describe what happened but the bottom line is both of these guys are idiots.

Mr. Jacobs decided to pester a political candidate because most reporters think they are the next Woodward & Bernstein, on the verge of breaking the next big story. They get in peoples face and ask stupid questions that usually make no sense, have no possible answer or are just plain rude. Let's face it, there are some reporters who deserve to be smacked around a little bit.

Mr. Gianforte decided to grab Jacobs and throw him to the floor because as with most politicians, he seems to think he is immune to the laws of this nation. They pretty much do whatever they want and then either profess ignorance, act with disdain or arrogantly display a sense of entitlement.

Both of them owe us an apology for their behavior.

Now having said that, I suspect that since Mr. Gianforte is from Montana, the land of manly-men, his decision to get physical will probably be seen as normal and he'll get elected.

It's a rant free day.

The Red Sox managed to win last night giving them a 2-win streak. Lets hope they win again tonight and end up with a 3-win streak.

I'd like to see a 5 or 6 game winning streak but until they get their pitching rotation straightened out and the offense starts hitting the ball, my hopes aren't high for that.


I was going to try and fly today but there were no aircraft available. The next several days are going to be kind of crappy weather-wise which means I won't be flying until sometime in June.

June is always a nice month to fly.

You should stop reading now because it's time for a rant...

Because I'm not a Prius driving, flannel wearing, bearded hippie with a ponytail, liberals think I'm a conservative.

Because I'm not a flag waving bible-thumper who drives an "American-made" car with a tea party bumper sticker, conservatives think I'm a liberal.

I'm neither.

I'm the average American who thinks supporting a political party without reservation is not only closed-minded, it's mob rule and sorta stupid.

For the record, I'm listed as an un-enrolled voter.

I'm the guy who's most likely to vote "None of the Above" on a ballot.

I'm the reason the democrats lost the white house. I'm also the reason the republicans are probably going to lose their majority in congress.

I'm just one of the vast majority of the people in this country who really are fed up with "politics as usual". It doesn't matter which party is in office, they are all arrogant pricks who have been bought by wealthy donors and corporations.

I'm the guy that doesn't think the republicans or the democrats are doing a good job and it's time for our government to be held to a higher standard. And that higher standard is something I like to call "common sense".

I'm the guy who cringes when he hears Elizabeth Warren talk about how terrible it is that banks lend money to people to get a college education and then expect them to pay it back. Oh, the horrors of asking people to meet their obligations!

I'm the guy who shakes his head in wonder when he hears Ted Cruz say that the "theory of evolution" is just a theory and creationism is true because King James told us so in his heavily-edited bible.

I'm the guy who wonders why we suddenly decided that it was okay for people to wander into this country without at least acting like they want to be here. Why is it considered "racist" if I want immigrants to come in the same way my moms parents did - by applying for citizenship and going through the process.

And by the way, wanting people to obey this nations well-established laws does not make me a nazi or a racist. It makes me an American because that is what America is - a nation of laws.

I'm neither a deplorable or a snowflake. I live by a simple philosophy:

Harm no man and let no man do harm to me or mine.

In other words, I won't screw with you if you don't screw with me.

I don't care about your sexual orientation, your political beliefs, your social beliefs or your latest "cause" but if you are blocking the intersection I'm trying to drive through, I'm going to get out of my car and and hit you in the kneecap with whatever is handy like a tire iron or a baseball bat.

I care about my family, my friends and myself - in that order. I know that it's hard to understand this but I don't care about you. Go believe and do whatever you want but you better not try to prevent me from believing and doing what I want.

I believe that the Founding Fathers spent several years crafting each and every word of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They did not simply toss it together late one night like it was some social studies paper they were trying to get a B on.

The Founders added the the Ninth Amendment to make it clear that all rights belong to the people, not the government and the government only has the powers specifically given it by the Constitution. For those of you that don't have Google or a copy of the Bill of Rights, here is the Ninth Amendment:

"The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

Also, just to be clear here, all of our rights are equal. That means if you want to claim your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, the other guy has every right to claim his First Amendment right to burn the flag. As a matter of fact, you should be standing next to him with your firearm to protect him while he's doing it.

The ability to voice your concerns to the government and society is what makes us great. The ability to use whatever means necessary to protect that right is what makes us strong.

And by the way Mr. Ex-Vice President Biden, the right to keep and bear arms as stated in the Second Amendment is not the government giving you a means to protect yourself from burglers or muggers. It's the Founders giving you the right to protect yourself from the government. So you keep your double-barreled shotgun Joe, I'll take a few thousand rounds of 5.56 and a Ruger ranch rifle with several 30 round magazines.

I've got a question:

Back in the 1940's, this nation came together and marshaled the determination & resources to design and build an atomic bomb from scratch in less than four years. Why, in the 21st century, have we not been able to bring the same level of commitment and resources to figure out how to replace fossil fuels with something that is sustainable, pollution-free and just as inexpensive?

Unless someone has figured out how to clone dinosaurs in huge numbers, kill them off en masse and then compress time, oil is not sustainable. It is a very finite resource and when it is gone, we are kinda screwed. No more gasoline, plastics, paint, tires, asphalt, etc...

We should be able to do stuff like that but we don't because we're too busy protesting and being offended.

To those of you that wake up each morning looking to be offended by something, please just stay in bed. You and the rest of the world will be better off for it. Your feigned outrage is petty, dramatic & idiotic and it isn't doing anyone any favors.

What happened to us?

We used to be a good people who worked hard, enjoyed life and stayed out of things that weren't our business. Now we seem to be a collection of individuals who try to find ways to interject our mis-informed opinion into every perceived social injustice or political spat.

If you've read this far and I didn't offend you, let me finish by telling you to stay the course. Don't be swayed by fanatics of any ilk. Conservatives and liberals aren't concerned about you, they are concerned about enforcing a belief system that shuts out half the population. This leads to conflicts, fights and eventually bloodshed.

The most important thing you can do is watch over your family and friends. When you die, no one is going to remember you for your political beliefs. They are going to remember you for the times you made them smile and laugh.


Okay, I'm done with my rant. Now it's time for me to watch the Red Sox and fall asleep in my recliner.

Easily offended people offend me.

I was reading all the stories about how they are erasing US history by removing all vestiges of the Confederacy. They are taking down statues, renaming monuments and banning the Stars and Bars because people are offended by them.

Here's what I think. I think that the people who are calling for the removal of the Stars and Bars because it offends them are the same people that are burning the Stars and Stripes, thus offending most Americans.

Think about that for a minute. They are claiming the right to offend most people by burning our national flag but they don't want to be offended by a flag that represented almost half the population of the country at one point in our history.

I'm not sure why people are suddenly offended by the Stars and Bars. It's been around for more than a hundred years and is usually used in the Good Ol' Boy context. In other words, it's a redneck/hillbilly kind of thing usually associated with a lot of beer drinking and the yelling of the word "yeehaw!" at the top of your lungs.

The popular word that these EOPs (Easily Offended People) use is "marginalized" but I'm not sure who or what is being put into a position of less power by a flag. They claim that the flag represents the oppression of blacks but I'm pretty certain the Emancipation Proclamation took care of that.

Just to be clear, I'm not a fan of the Stars and Bars. Hell, I'm not even a hillbilly. What really bothers me about the whole thing is that we, as a nation, are in the process of erasing a significant portion of our history and that is just wrong. Just because you don't like history doesn't give you the right to erase it.

I guess my real question is what are we going to erase next? What is the next piece of history that someone is going to decide does not meet their agenda and needs to be eliminated?

I personally think it's a bad thing that we are in the process of manipulating history. It makes us no different than Joseph Goebbels and the Nazi propaganda machine that manipulated history to suit their plans.

And if you think that turned out well for anyone, you need to stop erasing history and start reading it.

There once was a pretty bright Spaniard named George Santayana who said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

We should heed his words.


The Red Sox are on a travel day and tomorrow they are back in Boston where they kick off a three-game series against the Rangers.

After their embarrassing performance against the Athletics, I'm really hoping this series goes more in their favor.

As it stands right now, they are barely holding their heads above the .500 mark and if they drop below that, it puts them into the "Wow! Those guys suck!" category.

No one wants to be in that category.

It's a graduation kind of year.

I have nephews graduating from various schools and I am, as always, the proud uncle..

One of my nephews is named Nick and he just finished up a doctoral program. This means we can now call him Dr. Nick.


I would not be surprised to learn that this story has something to do with North Korea's recent missile launching spurt.

North Korea has been under the control of China since the 1950's and they have always done what China told them to do. I have a feeling that during the Obama years, the Chinese decided to flex a little muscle and part of that muscle is the North Korean military.

Let's face it, President Obama was not what anyone would call a strong leader and a lot of other leaders kind of looked at him like he was a wuss. Several small countries, North Korea being one of them, decided to start making waves and causing trouble and a lot of those countries received some tacit encouragement from either China, Russia or Iran.

That story is nothing more than China telling Obama, "Look what we can do!". It also happened during the time frame when North Korea kinda started going full-tilt bozo with Krazy Kim killing his relatives with anti-aircraft guns and setting off small nukes like it was the Fourth of July.

I'm not sure I'm correct or accurate, it's just a thought I had when I read the story.

The lawn is mowed.

Did you vote today? I voted today.

It's always interesting going to the polls in a small town. You always run into people that you know and you spend some time catching up on who is doing what.

It's like social media in the real world!


After I voted, I went and bought some new shoes or sneakers or whatever the hell they are called these days. I replaced my old Under Armor sneakers with a new pair of Under Armor sneakers.

Let me tell you, wearing these things is like wearing flip flops only without the annoying thing-between-your-toes thing.. They weigh almost nothing and the nylon is a loose weave that basically lets the air flow through them.

These are probably the most comfortable pair of sneakers I've ever owned.

I'm typing this and searching for links while watching this afternoons Red Sox game.

Last night, they sucked. There was no reason for them to lose that game to the last place Athletics. They just aren't scoring runs.

Sale pitched a hell of a game and he gave them every opportunity to win but they failed to step on home plate more that the Athletics.

As for today's game, well, they sucked again. It's currently the ninth inning and the score is 8-3 in favor of the Athletics. Unless they have a miracle ninth inning, they are gonna lose.

Busy day

The other day I noticed that my inspection sticker had the number 5 on it which is the state's way of telling me that my inspection sticker is going to expire at the end of May. I took my car to get inspected and was told that the side marker lights were burned out.

I went over to that crappy AutoZone store on Parker St. and waited in line with four or five of my closest friends for someone, anyone, to step up and run a cash register so we could pay for our goods and leave. After waiting for about 10 minutes or so, I remembered that there was another auto parts store just down the road. I put my light bulbs on the counter, walked out and headed over to Pep Boys. Not only did they have the bulbs I needed, they actually let me pay for them in a timely manner!

Once I got home, the fun really started when I discovered that changing the front running lights on a Volvo is akin to juggling boiling water while doing the limbo.

I had to remove numerous items from the engine compartment before I could even think about trying to reach the bulbs. Once I had everything out that I could take out, I had to contort my not overly large hand into a shape that most chimpanzees would find hard to replicate. Then I squeezed it into a space that was way too small for both my hand and the extremely hot component that I was not able to remove.

After branding the back of my hand, I was able to get to the bulb, remove it and replace it with one that works.

After that, I had to figure out how to replace all the crap I had removed. That took me a while but at least the engine compartment had cooled down to volcano temperatures so I didn't burn myself too badly.

The bottom line is that I was able to get my car inspected in time for me to then get changed into some fancy clothes and drive down to Avon, CT for my friend's wake.


I spent an hour or so at the funeral home talking to a lot of people about a lot of things. We all agreed on two things: Rich did not deserve what happened to him and we will all miss him.

Meeting night

Tonight was the night when all of the folks that I used to work with get together and commiserate about the fact we all lost our jobs.

We keep meeting like this because it's a pretty strong network of people who are all finding jobs and helping others find them.

It's the old adage: Sometimes it's not what you know, but who you know.

It was a bit warm and muggy today. Not terrible like August or September but enough to remind me how much I hate hot and humid weather.


The Red Sox managed to hold off the Cards last night and win the game. I managed to stay awake long enough to see them win the game.

They'll play again tonight at 8:00 and I'm hoping that they win this one too.

Cars are expensive

We try to maintain our cars in the hopes that they will last a good long time. We do it because cars are expensive to buy. Granted, once a car reaches a certain age, it is no longer a good idea to spend money on it but that age varies from car to car.

For instance, we had one car make it 17 years before we finally felt it was no longer worth it. One of my brothers is still driving a truck that has got to be approaching 20 years old. On the other hand, we've owned cars that turned into pieces of crap after 5 years.

Our current crop of cars seems to be of the type that are going to last us a good many years so we spend the money on maintenance and repairs.

This is a good thing because the last thing we want is a monthly car loan payment.

It's also a good thing because I have piece of mind that my daughter is driving a safe car.


The Red Sox are in St. Louis to play yet another National League team, the Cardinals. After their embarrassing losses to the Rays, I'm really hoping they take both games from the Cards and then sweep the Athletics in that upcoming four-game series.

My friend passed today

My friend Rich passed away today.

He was a good guy.

No, scratch that. He was a great guy.

I will even go so far as to say he was a true gentlemen with a heart of gold and a huge sense of adventure. He wanted to do everything and he wanted to do it with everyone. His goal in life was to make everyone around him happy.

He will be missed by all of us.


I spent quite a bit of my day researching how to kill off the damned ticks in my backyard without killing off my dogs. One of my discoveries is a product put out by Cutter that everyone (not just Cutter) claims is dog friendly as long as you spray it on a dry yard and then allow it to dry completely.

That means tomorrow around 11:30, I will let the dogs out to do their business and then spray my back yard with the stuff. Since the dogs spend most of their day sleeping on their respective couches, I'll leave them to sleep until the lawn dries.

Hopefully this stuff works as advertised because man, we got ticks. We give the dogs a monthly treatment that prevents the ticks from latching on to them but the little bastards are hitching rides on their fur and I'm finding them crawling across their bodies.

I hate ticks. They suck.

And they're home.

My wife and daughter have completed their 1,300 mile drive and are now safely ensconced in our humble abode.

The Large Main Dog is happy to have the Small Emergency Backup Dog once again stealing his toys and hiding them in her small corner of the TV room.

It shall remain this way until late August when they repeat the entire trip in reverse, minus the stop in Canada of course.


The Red Sox lost to the Rays last night.

Porcello pitched okay up until the 4th inning when he gave up two runs and then 3 runs in the 5th. The offense, on the other hand. failed to score a run until the 7th inning when they scored 4.

And that was how the game ended with the Rays winning 5-4.

With a storm arriving in Boston this evening, they moved today's game up to 1:00pm and Chris Sale chalked up another win. The Red Sox batters hit the ball often and managed to cross home plate 6 times while the Rays were only able to cross it 3 times.

I'm not entirely sure they'll play tomorrows game because of this storm. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.


There is now ball game for me to watch this evening but that's okay, because the ladies are home.

They have arrived in Canada.

The Small Emergency Backup Dog apparently went into protective mode when the Canadian Border Agent leaned into the car. She put on her best, "Don't mess with us!" voice and growled at the agent.

Not the best first impression I guess but since Canada is notoriously nice, they let her in anyways.


As for me and The Large Main Dog, he protected me from the vacuum while I was doing a little cleaning. He growled at it and backup up whenever it moved.

After that, we went for a nice walk and he managed to make it around the entire block before he started limping.

He is currently recovering from all the activity by taking a much needed nap on the couch.


The Red Sox are back in Boston for a few of days to play a three game series against the Rays and I'm hoping they play better than they did against the Brewers.

Gotta love Costco

I woke this morning with a little bit of a hangover but not terrible. I was more tired than hungover because I hung out with John at The Tap Room last night, watching the Red Sox lose and drinking adult beverages. Fortunately they have this thing called ibuprofen and that takes care of headaches quite nicely.

I made a Costco run this morning for a few things and quickly discovered that they have the pills we give The Dog to prevent a recurrence of his ACL tear. It's a pretty common supplement called cosequin and we normally buy it at Walmart in bottles of 60.

Today I found it at Costco in bottles of 180 for twice the price.

That's basically 3 for the price of 2.

I love deals.


Like I said, I spent some time hanging out with John last night. He still hasn't closed on the business but that's because these things are complicated and take a long time to wrap up. All the licenses and permits have been put in his name, so he's just basically waiting for the closing to happen.

Hopefully that happens in the next week.

I like the place that he's buying. It has good food, a huge selection of beers for those of you that drink that yuppie craft beer stuff and a nice crowd of regulars. The waitresses & bartenders are pleasant and there is a generally good atmosphere. They have live local music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and they usually post who's playing on their Facebook page.


My wife and Daughter have successfully arrived in Sandusky Ohio and are settled in for the night.

After today's 10 hour drive, tomorrow's 5 hour drive to Niagara Falls will seem short by comparison but I'm betting their butts will still hurt.

And so it begins.

I took my wife to Bradley bright and early this morning where she boarded a plane to Des Moines. Well, actually, she boarded a plane to Chicago and then she boarded another plane to Des Moines.

My daughter met her at the airport and they drove to Ames where The Small Emergency Backup Dog had herself a great time when she saw my wife. Apparently there was much dancing and whining and licking.

Tomorrow they will start the process of driving back to Massachusetts by first driving to Sandusky Ohio and enjoying a pleasant night in a hotel. Since it's not the summer, there isn't much to do in Sandusky. If it was the summer, they could go to Cedar Point and ride the worlds largest roller coaster. Well, my daughter could ride it. My wife would sit on a bench and watch her ride it.

On Friday, they will drive to Niagara Falls where they will enter Canada and spend the night in a hotel. They will do a little sight seeing and hopefully not attempt to ride a barrel over the falls.

On Saturday, they will leave Niagara Falls and drive home where they will probably both be grateful to sleep in their own beds and The Small Emergency Backup Dog will probably have another apoplectic event in her joy to see both me and The Large Main Dog.

As for me, I will be glad when they are both home. The Dog isn't very entertaining and it's kinda boring around here.


The Red Sox sucked last night.

I have to mow my lawn again.

I've already mowed my lawn three times this year and it needs to be mowed again. This is the problem with too much rain.

I think I'm going to leave it alone this week and let it get nice and long. As I understand it, that will force the grass to spread into the barren areas. Or at least hide the barren areas...

In my opinion, hiding them is just as good as filling them in.


I was going to try and fly today but the low clouds and lack of available aircraft ruled that out.

It's kind of hard to fly without a plane.


Baseball will be played this evening and I will be watching it.

No baseball today.

The Red Sox are on a day off in Milwaukee. I'm thinking they would rather have a day off somewhere other than Milwaukee, you know, like Miami or Las Vegas, but since I've never been there, I don't really know.

Tomorrow they start a three game series against the National League  Brewers. This means that the Red Sox pitchers will have to bat.

It's always interesting watching the American League pitchers bat. It's not something they usually do and they either suck at it or they hit a home run.

I'm hoping for the home run thing.


Today was one of those days that's a little weird. My friend Rich is on a ventilator and he is still dealing with some infections but they have an infectious disease team working on him and hopefully they'll figure out what is trying to kill him.

His wife is optimistic but not in a naive kind of way. She spent most of her life as a nurse and is fully aware of what's going on. Hopefully her optimism is well placed and Rich will get back to his normal self soon.

Upset recovery

I spent a few hours this morning attending a session put on by my cousin Bob about how to recover when your aircraft is no longer in coordinated flight. This is known as "upset recovery" and Bob, who has been flying for a long time and competes in acrobatic competitions, knows more about being upset and recovering from it than most.

It was a good session and he gives a clear idea of some things I kinda already knew. The plane wants to fly straight and level and if the pilot puts it into a unusual attitude, it will try to correct itself as long as the pilot lets it. In other words, don't over-control the plane trying to get it back on track, use small inputs and let it control itself.

This is all very easy to say but when you find yourself suddenly upside down because you crossed the wake of a C-5, you panic and try to correct. Bob's point is that your fist goal should be to not panic.

My first goal is to stay the hell away from C-5's.


After I got home from that class, I settled in to watch the Red Sox massacre the Twins.

They went into the ninth inning with the score 7-6 in favor of the Red Sox. That was when the Twins fell apart and the Red Sox scored 10 runs in the ninth inning making the score 17-6.

The Twins came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth and managed to get zero more runs, making the final score 17-6.

I gotta be honest with you, the ninth inning was kinda boring to watch but I enjoyed it none-the-less.

Say a prayer for my friend Rich

Several months ago, Rich was diagnosed with a cancer. He was undergoing chemotherapy and doing well until his body decided to hold a revolution and he developed some bad infections.

The other day, he started having trouble breathing and now they have him in ICU undergoing dialysis. That's another way of saying things are breaking down.

He does not deserve this. He is by far one of the sweetest, kindest people I know.

Say a prayer for him. If praying isn't your thing then maybe just think a good thought for him.


I did not have any plans to fly today and I'm glad for that. Man, was it windy.

According to the Aviation Weather website, Barnes in Westfield was reporting wind out of the south (190°) at 20 knots (23 mph) with gusts to 29 knots (34 mph).

That 20 knot wind gives a 15 knot (17 mph) cross wind when landing on runway 14 and that definitely does not work for me. I've set a personal maximum of a 12 knot crosswind. Anything greater than that keeps me on the ground.


I'm pretty sure nothing blew off my house and I was pleased to see I still have my grill cover. I did see someones grill cover blew across the street when I was driving home from the store this morning.

If you can't find your grill cover, it might be somewhere in Hampden or maybe even Connecticut by now.


The Red Sox lost last night but this afternoons game seemed to go a lot better for them.

The Red Sox managed to grab a decent lead in the second inning and hold on to that lead throughout the remaining eight innings. The game ended with the Red Sox beating the Twins 11-1.

I like it when they win.

Color me shocked.

I'm not only shocked, I'm amazed!

NBC news, one of the most opinionated and liberal news outlets on the planet, has published an article that was not hyper-critical of firearms.

The author does, however, keep putting the term Good Samaritan in quotes throughout his story.

Putting terms in quotes is sometimes used by a writer to indicate the term is not one they would normally use in the context it is being used. It's like saying someone has a "nice personality" when what you really mean is they are so ugly they look like a character from the cantina scene in Star Wars,

NBC is the news organization that first used that now infamous and misleading term "gun violence" and has spent the last ten years publishing stories that basically say there is no reason for anyone to own a gun. I, on the other hand, have spent the last ten years attempting to explain that violence is an emotional reaction to something and since guns are not alive, they cannot have emotions. This means the term "gun violence" is a lie. Guns cannot be violent, only thinking, emotional beings can be violent.

In other words, NBC spends a lot of time lying about things in an attempt to perpetuate some agenda they have.

Oh, and they have a "nice personality".


The Red Sox once again managed to give up a lead and lose a ball game to the Orioles. They had a two run lead until the Orioles decided to stop fooling around and start hitting the ball.

The Red Sox, however, continued to fool around....

Today they are out in Minnesota to play a three game series against the Twins. The Twins are just slightly better (.002 better) than the Red Sox right now so it should be a fairly well matched game.

Hopefully the Red Sox stop fooling around and start playing baseball.

Finally got some flying in

At 8:00 this morning I checked the aviation weather report and then checked to see if there were any planes available. As luck would have it, not only were the winds predicted to be reasonably calm, there was a plane available.

I only flew for about 45 minutes and remained in the pattern practicing my landings. I got four full stop landings in before I called it a day.

The only reason I stopped early is because today is the day that Northampton Aeronautics holds it's Wright Flight academy flights and the rental schedule was pretty tight.

The Wright Flight program is a program where middle school students who would like to learn how to fly sign up for a series of classes that are taught by folks in the aviation industry. They do things like study aerodynamics, physics, etc... They also take tours of the tower at Barnes Airport out in Westfield and the mechanics hanger at Northampton.

After the kids have successfully completed their training, they get to take a ride in a plane with an instructor and they are allowed to fly the plane.

I wish they had something like that when I was in junior high.


When I got home I mowed my lawn, scratched up a few more dead spots and spread some seed.

It's supposed to rain over the next few days so I figured mowing the lawn and spreading some more seed was a good idea.

I have good ideas sometimes but I'm not entirely sure spreading grass seed around is one of them.


So I guess it was time for Delta to step deeply into the cesspool known as "Airline Customer Service" and boot paying customers off a plane.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the aircraft is no different that a ship. The flight crew is in charge and what they say goes. What I don't get is how they justify charging you money for a seat and then saying you have to get off the plane.

You paid them for a seat on the plane.

They took your money and said you had a seat on the plane.

They told you what time to be in your seat on the plane.

You got to the gate at the time they told you to be there, they took the ticket you paid for and you walked through the gate, down the walkway and onto the plane.

You sat down in the seat you paid them for.

Then some overly-dominant, power-hungry little Napoleon (or Napoleoness) suddenly says, "Just kidding! You have to get off the plane!"

How do they justify that?


The Red Sox managed to win last night and I'm hoping they win again tonight. I will be watching the game so you can expect that I will be offering them my sage advice.

Another embarrassing game

Don't get me wrong, they beat the Orioles but somehow they ended up in a triple play in the fourth inning.

How the hell do you get yourself into a triple play?

Easy.... No one runs.

The batter, Bradley, hit a short fly ball to center field.

He did not run to first because he was sure the outfielder was going to catch the ball.

The first base runner, Pedrioa, did not run to second he was sure the outfielder was going to catch the ball.

The second base runner, Moreland, did not run to third he was sure the outfielder was going to catch the ball.

The outfielder however had different plans and he missed the ball.

Moreland started to run to third when he saw the ball hit the ground but Hardy, the outfielder, threw the ball to the second baseman ho was able to tag Moreland. That's one out.

Then the second baseman then stepped on second base, getting the force out of Pedroia at second. That's two outs.

Then the second baseman threw the ball to the first baseman who stepped on the bag, getting the force out of Bradley. That's three outs.

It was an interesting and rare play but at it's best, it was embarrassing for the Red Sox.

So much for flying.

The weather guys said it would clear up and the sun was going to come out late this morning.

They were wrong.

It was overcast most of the day with a ceiling between 500 and 2,000 feet.

I'm not flying in the clouds.


Not much going on other than the Red Sox are bordering on being embarrassing.

They made four errors in last nights loss to the Orioles and they also had a major base-running screwup when Hanley Ramirez and Andrew Benintendi both ended up standing on second base at the same time.

I now that MLB is making changes to the rules in the hopes of making the game more exciting and faster but trust me, have two base runners on the same base at the same time is still not allowed.

Welcome to May

My grass seed is liking the rain/sun mix we've got going on around here. Most of the spots have some shoots and a couple of spots are filled in completely. The way things are going, I'm might actually have a lawn this year.

That means I'm going to have to mow it.

What the hell was I thinking....


The Red Sox are starting a four game series against the Orioles tonight. Hopefully they take at least two of the games and I would love to see them take three. Hell, if they sweep, I'll be ecstatic!
