They lost

The Red Sox lost last night but they are still in the 2nd wildcard slot and they are still in 3rd place in the ALEast.

What is worse is the incredible bad luck they ran into head-on like a little kid learning to ride his bike next to a large brick building.

The new guy, Mead, played his first Red Sox game on Monday and it did not go well. He struck out in his first at-bat in a Red Sox uniform but he made it to first base in his second at-bet because he got hit by a pitch. He was hit on the left wrist by a fastball which, I can assure you, hurts like hell.

They took him out of the game, got him x-ray'd and it looked like he was only dealing with a bruise. They figured to give him a day or two to get the pain out of his system and then he would be back ready to play baseball.

Alas, that was not to be...

He got an MRI this morning and it turns out his wrist is fractured and he will be out for more than "a day or two".

The internet has begun the process of creating funny memes about his time with the Red Sox:

Sandoval has the start tonight and I will once again try to stay awake for at least one inning, maybe two.

When I am wrong, I'm wrong.

Turns out that the other day, when I said Gas Buddy is full of shit, I was wrong.

The website has a filter option that allows you to filter on which grade or type of fuel you are looking for and at some point I inadvertently switched from regular to premium.

When I found that little glitch in my system, I switched it back to regular and discovered that they are indeed extremely accurate:

Please allow me to apologize to the good people of Gas Buddy who offer us this excellent, and accurate, service free of charge.

It rained a little bit here today...

Interesting win

The Red Sox did not score a run until the 6th inning last night. Fortunately, it was a grand slam hit by Rafaela and it put the Red Sox up 4-2.

And that was the score when the game ended, giving them the win.

As of this afternoon, the Red Sox remain in 3rd place in the ALEast and are now 2 full games ahead of the Guardians in the wildcard.

Tonight's game will once again start at 9:40 and I will once again try to watch the first 2 innings. Bennett has the start.

Sacramento A's

The Red Sox are in Sacramento to start a 4-game series against the team formerly known as "The Oakland Athletics", currently known as "The Athletics" but called "The Sacramento Athletics" by me and soon to be known as "The Las Vegas Athletics" by all of Major League Baseball.

For the record, the A's kinda suck and they are currently in second-to-last place in the American League.

The problem I have with that is that the Red Sox seem to play worse against teams that are lower than them in the standings. It's almost as if they play down to their opponents level.

My hope-o-meter is kinda of sketchy for this series.

Oh, and since the games all start at 9:40 at night, I will not be watching them.

Gas Buddy is full of shit.

I filled my car and my 5 gallon gas can this morning and I paid $3.19 ($3.84 - $.05 member price - $.60 in point accrual) at the Big Y Express gas station. Gas Buddy claims the price is $4.84. That is a dollar more than the actual price.

I don't know when the problem with the Gas Buddy map started but I can tell you that up until a month ago, it was pretty accurate. Now it lies more than the federal government...

No, Pat, Willie and I have not gone golfing lately.

It's either been too damned hot, too wet, or one of us is off on some trip somewhere.

We will get out there one of these days.

Yea, yea, I know.

Apparently this has become a "I'll post when I feel like it" thing.

I like it.

The Red Sox are playing pretty well. They won the first game of the series, lost the next game and then won today's game. This gives them the series win.

They are currently in the #2 wildcard slot, a full 1½ games ahead of the Guardians.

They also made a trade with the Nationals. They traded pitcher Connelly Early for infielder Curtis Mead.

Mead is from Australia so I'm hoping he brings with him a certain set of descriptive verbs, nouns and adjectives that will make some people, like me, laugh out loud and other people cringe like the prudes they are...

In other baseball news, the Worcester Red Sox swept the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. They played a 6-game series and the Shrimp never stood a chance.

Oh, and this made me laugh out loud:

Oops

I forgot to post something last night.

Deal with it.

The Red Sox take on the Blue Jays tonight and the game is being streamed on Apple TV.

That means no watching for me, just listening.

Maybe Castiglione will be on the call

15-game winning streak

The Red Sox won game 1 of today's double-header, beating the Orioles 6-3 and tying the franchise 15-game winnings streak.

A win tonight will break the old record from 1946.

My hope-o-meter is past the top of the scale and is approaching "holy shit" range.

Scrapping

This morning I took an old lawnmower and several fairly heavy pieces of metal to the scrap yard and I was given $12.00 for it.

I thought that was a heck of a windfall and I told my wife I was going to become a scrapper.

You know what a scrapper is, right? One of those crazy old guys driving around in a 1981 Dodge D-150 pickup with rusted out wheel wells and no tailgate, loaded beyond its capacity with every imaginable piece of metal, all held down by what appears to be a couple of old leather belts and three or four bungee cords.

When I suggested it to my wife, she gave me a look that indicated she thought I might have some kind of brain damage.

According to this "expert", the Red Sox are going to have a tough time beating the Orioles.

He says this because apparently the Orioles are "surging". And by surging, what he means is they are on a 7-game winning streak.

Don't get me wrong, a 7-game winning streak is nothing to sneeze at but somehow, I don't find myself all that worried about them.

The hope-o-meter is still pegged at the top.

Oh, and Fangraphs now gives them a 58.9% chance of making the playoffs.

13-game winning streak

The Red Sox have swept the Rays and have a 13-game winning streak.

I'm just going to say it - 13 games is a lot of games without a loss. Like a shitload of games.

For the record, they are now at .510 and are only 6 games out of first place in the ALEast.

Tomorrow the Red Sox welcome the Orioles into Boston to start a 3-game series. First pitch is at 7:10 and Tolle is scheduled to start.

My hope-o-meter is pegged at the top of the scale.

11 game winning streak

The Red Sox won last next, extending their winning streak to 11 and for a brief moment, they were the 3rd wildcard team. I was so happy to see that, I took a screenshot of the standings at 10:00 last night:

Unfortunately, the Twins won their game against the Cubs last night so they were tied for the 3rd wildcard spot. I was so unhappy to see that, I took a screenshot of the standings at 4:50 this afternoon:

Fortunately, the Twins lost today's game against the Cubs so the Red Sox are once again the 3rd wildcard team. I was so happy that I took a screenshot of the standings at 5:10 this afternoon:

If the Red Sox win this afternoon, they will not only have a 12 game winning streak, they will also take a one game lead over the Twins.

The hope-o-meter is pinged to the top of the scale.

I had a very busy day today and now I'm watching baseball so this is all you get:
  • I have a name for people that do that: Inconsiderate Asshole.

  • Let the shootin' war begin. It's only a matter of time before Hegseth decides to live up to his self-imposed title of "Secretary of War" and announces a ground war.

  • I think six is a lot. Don't you think six is a lot?

10-game winning streak

The Red Sox are playing a double-header today and this afternoon's game ended with the Red Sox beating up the Rays, winning the game 10-0.

Bennett had the start and he faced 21 batters over 6 innings, giving up 1 hit, striking out 3 and walking 1 batter.

That win put the Red Sox into a 3-way tie for the 3rd wildcard slot.
All that needs to happen now is for the Twins and the Mariners to both lose and for the Red Sox to win tonight. The hope-o-meter is high.

As for tonight's game, first pitch is at 7:10 and as of right now, they have not announced a starting pitcher. I'm thinking it might be either the new guy, Sandoval, or the new guy, Rivera.

For the record, that is a wild-ass guess on my part.

I did not watch Dementia Donny's speech last night and I understand I didn't really miss anything. Even the "expert" interpreters aren't really sure what he was talking about.

He did threaten to pull the broadcast licenses of the two national networks that did not air his ramblings.

He also claimed, repeatedly, that there were recently declassified documents that proved that China interfered in the 2020 election. Unfortunately for Donny, no one else except FOXnews thinks those documents prove anything.

The lawn is mowed

I managed to get my lawn mowed, finally, and it was absolutely about time. I had to empty the damned bags at least 6 times.

I also ran the sprinklers for 5 minutes because the lawn is beginning to burn and the stress of being run over by a lawn tractor was probably going to make it worse. Hopefully watering it for a few minutes relieved some of the stress.

By the way, the price of a gallon of gasoline went up $1.00 in just the last two days...

There is an incredible amount of repeat news so other than gasoline probably going over $5.00 a gallon tonight, I don't have much new to bitch about.

This evening, Trump is giving a speech about his favorite subject: "The Election Was Stolen From Me!" so maybe I'll complain about that tomorrow. You can rest assured that I will not be watching it simply because I get a headache listening to him say things.

I'm sure that tomorrow morning the so-called "experts" will have analyzed his speech and they will be more than happy to fill me in on what they think he said. Once I digest that bullshit, I'll try and find a transcript so I can figure out what he really said.

It'll be fun.

AL wins

The American League won last nights All Star game, which means absolutely nothing...

There is no benefit to winning the game other than the players on the winning team get $25,000 each.

Not sorry I didn't watch it.

I got to thinking the other day about how great everything was going to be once Dementia Donny got elected. Then I thought about all the things he said after he got elected.

Remember when he said we would all get "DOGE" checks from all the money he was saving us? What happened to them? And what about those tariff checks he said he would be sending out? I sure could use those checks.

Remember when he said he would lower the price of prescription drugs by "1,500" percent? I would like to get paid to get medicated.

Remember when he said starting on day one of his presidency he would lower grocery prices and end the war in Ukraine? I'd settle for lower grocery prices...

Remember when he said he would release every one of the Epstein files?

Remember when he dug up the Rose Garden and Jacqueline Kennedy Memorial? And when he knocked down the east wing of the White House and said the new ball room would be paid for by private donations?

I'm sure glad I remember those things because it seems like no one in the executive branch of the federal government remembers them...

Baseball is a weird business

The winner of last night's Home Run Derby was a young man named Jordan Walker. The prize for winning that contest was $1,000,000.

Jordan Walker is a pre-arbitration eligible player which means he earns league minium. That is currently $780,000

So in one night, Jordan Walker earned more money in one night than he gets paid to play all season long.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

As for the Netflix coverage of the event, it sucked huge.

It was one of the worst broadcast coverages of any sport event I've ever watched.

I do not understand why MLB thinks putting games on pay-for-view networks is a good idea.

It's not a good idea, it's stupid idea. Baseball viewership has been declining pretty steadily for the last several years and this is one of the reasons why.

The All Star game is at 8:00 tonight and I might watch a bit of it. FOX is carrying the game which means listening to Joe Davis and John "I wouldn't have thrown that pitch" Smoltz.

Again, I love watching baseball but the All Star game has traditionally been a joke to watch. The tv coverage kinda sucks because they keep showing everything except the ball game. They show the announcers chit-chatting about some guy who is not there, they show the field reporter interviewing some celebrity he found in the stands, shit like that.

I'll probably watch the first two innings and then flip over to the cooking channel. Who knows, maybe someone will actually be doing some cooking instead of participating in a game show hosted by Guy Fieri...

Not much happening

The Home Run Derby will be held at 8:00 tonight and I might watch a bit of it. I understand they have gone back to the old format of limited swings instead of the timed format they tried last year.

There are 3 rounds and each hitter gets 20 swings in the 1st round. The top four hitters will move on to round 2 where they each get 15 swings. The top two from that round move on to the finals where they will have 15 swings.

There is a new rule called the "hitting streak" where if a hitter hits a home run on the last swing of the round, he will get another swing. He will keep hitting until he fails to hit a home run.

My problem is I think it's kind of boring watching a guy swing and hit meatball pitches which is why I'll probably only watch a bit of it. Contreras is up first so I'll put it on to see how he does.

Depending on who you listen to, we are looking at another potential heat wave in my part of the world.

According to the TV dweebs, tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday are all predicted to be above 90°

According to the internet dweebs, tomorrow is predicted to be above 90° but the rest of the days are going to be below 90°

I don't care because as far as I'm concerned, anytime the temps are above 80° and the humidity is above 65%, it's uncomfortable and I don't like it.

A 9-game winning streak

It took them 10 innings but the Red Sox beat the Mets 3-2 this afternoon, sweeping that series. This gives them a 9-game winnings streak and 3 sweeps in a row.

They are currently (as of 5:00 this afternoon) ½ a game out of the wild card:

And according to Fangraphs, they now have a 41.9% chance of making the playoffs:

The All Star break commences tonight so they are off now until Friday when they will play a double header against the Rays. This is the makeup game from a rainout in early May followed by the first game of a 3-game series.

I would like to say that my hope-o-meter is very high right now but I'm a guy who remembers that the Red Sox tend to go into a slump after the All Star break. I guess my hopes are that they have already had their slump and they will continue rolling along through the rest of the season.

South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham died last night after to a "brief and sudden" illness. He had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine.

Another story indicates his "brief and sudden" illness may have been heart disease. I guess he was known to have a lot of plaque in his arteries.

And for the record, I always thought Graham was an honorable guy. He tended to be a little bit of a warmonger but he, like John McCain, always wanted to do what was right.

As for Mitch "Seizure" McConnell, who the hell knows what is going on with him. All we have to go on is a statement released by his office that claims to be from him. For all we know,he may also be dead.

Seven in a row

Despite being exhausted from the weird flying situation the night before, the Red Sox beat the Mets 6-2 last night, giving them a 7-game winning streak and moving them into a tie for third place in the ALEast.

The odds of them making the playoffs have also improved. Fangraphs now has them at 33.2%

As for today, the Red Sox brought up a kid from Worcester named Eduardo Rivera as the starting pitcher. As I understand it, this was not his MLB debut. I guess he pitched 3 innings against the Yankees back in April.

It is currently the 4th inning and the Red Sox are up 2-0. If the batters can get a few more runs, they stand a chance of making it 8 wins in a row.

We made the mistake of going to the grocery store this morning. I had forgotten what a pain in the ass it is to go grocery shopping on the weekend.

Odds are improving.

Fangraphs has increased the odds of the Red Sox making the playoffs.

They now have a 30.7% chance of making the playoffs which is way better than the 20.7% chance they had three days ago.

Tonights game against the Mets was scheduled to start at 7:15 but it got pushed back to 7:50 because the Red Sox plane was busted and they didn't get to New York until 4:00 this afternoon.

Right now it is the top of the 4th inning and the Red Sox are up 2-1.

It's things like this that make my hope-o-meter continue to climb upwards...

My youngest son, my daughter-in-law and my grandaughter are spending their first night in their new home.

They found a nice condo in Boston that they put a bid on a month or so ago. The owner liked them and accepted their bid without allowing for any bidding wars.

They closed on the place yesterday and today, one of my sons friends showed up with U-Haul truck to help them move from their cramped apartment.

A win and a win!

The Red Sox beat the White Sox 5-0 last night and with that win, they earned their second 5-game winning streak in the last two weeks.

The Red Sox beat the White Sox 2-1 this afternoon and with that win, they earned their first 6-game winning streak of the season!

If they can keep this up, they will definitely make the playoffs.

They are currently on the road heading to Queens where tomorrow they will start a 3-game series against the Mets. This will be their last series before the All Star break

My hope-o-meter has moved into the upper levels.

I don't know why but I have a strong dislike of this.

I've sat in a bar and watched people gamble. I've been to Las Vegas on business and watched people gamble. Hell, I've even bought the occasional lottery ticket and I once placed a longshot $10.00 bet that the Red Sox would win the World Series (they didn't). Gambling is something that most people do because they find it fun to try and win a few dollars.

Sports gambling is something different altogether. I'm not talking about the "Buy a Super Bowl square for $5.00" kind of gambling, I'm talking about the "Bet $10.00 that the next batter hits a home run" kind of gambling. That is the kind of gambling that people who can't afford it are doing. It is an addiction that may very well be worse than a drug addiction. They can't stop doing it, not matter how they try.

And it is that kind of gambling that the MLB seems to have embraced. Before every baseball game, the pre-game talking heads will usually give a series of odds on certain things happening, like how many hits someone will get or how many batters the pitcher will strike out. They encourage people to bet using apps on their cellphones and they tell them how much fund they'll have doing it.

This shit is wrong and it is ruining peoples lives. In my opinion this is no different than if they were encouraging people to shoot heroin into their veins or snort cocaine so they can enjoy the game with a nice high.

Yet another win

No, I did not make it through all 9 innings last night. I made it through 7 innings before briefly falling asleep, waking up and going to bed.

When I went to bed, the score was 4-1 in favor of the Red Sox and when I woke up this morning, I learned the final score was 8-1 in favor of the Red Sox.

What I also discovered is that the Red Sox are no longer in last place in the ALEast

I also noticed that FanGraphs is now giving them a 23.6% chance of making the playoffs:

Tonights game has Bennett with the start. First pitch is at 7:40.

Baseball at a decent time

The Red Sox are in Chicago to play the White Sox and the game is scheduled to start at 7:40.

Tolle has the start tonight and he is always a joy to watch pitch. The kid has such a good time playing baseball. Actually, I suspect he has a good time doing pretty much anything. He strikes me as a guy who would make jokes and screw around while mucking out a stable.

The White Sox lead the ALCentral divsion and are a solid 6½ games ahead of the Red Sox in the standings so the hope-o-meter isn't as high as it could be but I'm nowhere near as optimistic as this guy is.

Oh, and Fangraphs has raised the odds of the Red Sox making the playoffs to 20.7%

In all honesty, I'm just glad I'll be able to watch more than half an inning of baseball this evening.

This made me laugh.

This made me laugh out loud.

For those of you that don't get it, the Belgium team beat the US team even after Trump asked the soccer people to overturn the suspension of a US player. The Belgium players are doing the famous "Trump dance" but in my opinion, they are doing it wrong. When Trump does it, it's more like he's giving Putin a blowjob...

I really, really need to mow my lawn. I'm hoping that it stops raining tonight and at some point tomorrow the lawn will be dry enough for me to mow it.

It's pretty damned long.

They swept the Angels.

I stayed awake long enough to watch the first inning and things did not look good for the Red Sox. The Angles pitcher was throwing gas and the Red Sox batters were struggling to find the ball. When I went to bed, the Angels were up 2-0.

I woke up this morning to find that the Red Sox beat the Angels 7-5 and swept the series.

They still aren't doing great in the standings and are in dire need of a lengthy winning streak but they are only 4 games out of the wildcard.

Once again, my hope-o-meter is above the middle.

They are off today so I guess it's a DVR kind of night for me.

Here's a thought:

The "news media" really needs to stop reporting on hot dog eating contests.

There is nothing more disgusting than seeing someone jamming numerous hot dogs into their open maw while slobbering all over the themselves.

It's not a sport, it's not a contest, it's not entertainment and it's absolutely not news.

This is just my humble opinion.

Others may have differing opinions.

Those people are wrong.

Busy day

We spent the day in Boston being entertained by our granddaughter.

I was gonna brag but I won't. Instead I'll just say she is a healthy, happy and beautiful little girl.

Her parents, however, are mostly healthy, very happy and kinda tired. The "very happy, kinda tired" part is what all parents are. The "mostly healthy" is because my son decided to twist his ankle while on a run and he's now wearing some kind of ankle brace.

This has been an update on our newest granddaughter.

I was going to try and mow my lawn but by the time we got home, the last thing I wanted to do was mow.

Besides, I'm pretty sure no one has ever killed their lawn by letting it get a little long.

The Red Sox won again last night, beating the Angels 8-1.

Traditionaly, the Red Sox go into a deep slump just after the All Star break. I hoping that this year, they have decided to reverese their slump schedule. I'm hoping they have been in a major slump prior to the break and once the break is over, they are going to go on a major winning streak. Like one of those awe-inspiring 20 game winning streak.

Hey, I can dream, right?

Anyways, tonights game is the 3rd and final game in their 3-game series against the Angels. First pitch is at 9:30 and Suarez is scheduled to start.

Once they are done with this series, they go to Chicago where on Tuesday they will start a 3-game series against the White Sox. Those game will be at a much saner hour which means I might be able to watch them.

I probably won't be turning the AC off tonight. It is still predicted to be between 75° and 80° with high humidity.

I am not going to try and fall asleep in a puddle of sweat...

Tomorrow however, is a different story. It's predicted to be in the upper 70s / lower 80s with a light breeze and little humidity.

Hopefully it is a nice day for some lawn mowing.

The Red Sox won last night, beating the Angels 5-2 and taking game 1 of their 3-game series.

I will admit that I saw just about 15 seconds of last nights game.

At 9:00, I turned on NESN to catch the pre-game bullshit session and prmptly fell asleep. I woke up around 10:00 or so to find the Red Sox up 4-0 in the 3rd inning. That was enough for me to turn the tv off and go to bed.

Tonights game has a 9:38 start and Grey has the start.

The hope-o-meter is faltering between middle and upper middle...

Another hot day

I forgot to check the thermometer at 2:00 this afternoon but I did check it just before 4:00 and found it was once again 99° on my back porch.

Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be slightly less hot with temps in the upper 80s which means I might actually be able to mow my lawn.

I have been seeing several news stories about the fact the United States does not have any laws granting workers paid time off. Apparently all the Europeans that came over here for the soccer games are bragging about how much time they have off and the media noticed it.

I don't understand why there is a need for a law requiring paid time off.

I started working at the age of 14 when my cousin and I spent a summer digging holes to plant apple tree at the orchard behind my aunt's house. It was a part time job so I got no paid time off.

At 15, I got my "working papers" from the high school and I went to work nights at a restaurant bussing tables. Eventually I started working in the kitchen cooking seafood. Again, it was a part time job so I got no paid time off.

At 17 I got sick of cooking for people and I took a job at a department store. Again, it was part time so I got no paid time off but when I turned 18 and I graduated from high school, I took a full time position and got my first taste of vacation time.

Ever since then and until the end of my working days, I worked full-time jobs and I have always had the ability to take paid time off. In some cases, the paid time off was quite generous.

My point is, if you are currently working a full time job that does not give you any paid time off, you need to think about getting an different job. I'm betting that any employer who won't give you some time off also isn't handing out matching 401(k) contributions or making sure you have decent health care...

Since I managed to get a great night's sleep last night, I might actually be able to watch an inning or two of baseball.

It was hot.

My part of the world did not experience the heat that the weather dweebs predicted but it was close.

At 2:00 this morning, I was awake and listening to the ac's pumping out their cool air. I decided to see what the outside temperature was so I grabbed my phone and checked the weather:

At 2:00 this afternoon, I decided to see what the outside temperature was so I checked my thermometer:

For the record, the sensor for that thermometer is on the back wall of my porch in the shade. That means that 99° is air temp, not sunshine temp.

When it's in the upper 70s at 2:00 in the morning, you know it's going to be a hot day. Turns out it was a hot day.

No baseball for me to watch tonight so I'll watch a little bit of the opening round of the John Deere Classic and then I guess I'll burn through some DVRs.

Then again, I didn't get a lot of sleep last night so maybe I'll just go to bed early and read until I pass out.

I need an explanation

How is it that the Red Sox can win 4 of 4 games against the Yankees and then turn around and lose 2 of 3 against the Nationals?

Can any of you explain that to me?

The needle on my hope-o-meter is dipping...

They are off tomorrow while they travel to the west coast where they will play a 3-game series against the Angels.

Since the Angels are worse than the Red Sox, I really hope they win that series.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to watch any of the games because they don't start until after 9:30 at night.

The AC has been running since 10:00 this morning.

If you don't have air conditioning, I feel really bad for you. At my house, the temp got above 96° and the humidity was above 70%.

That, my friends, sucks but it's going to be worse tomorrow. The weather dweebs keep throwing around tempartures like 102° and even higher humidity.

Oh, and they are also saying the low tonight will be somewhere around 75° so none of that "cool night air" for us! Those air conditioners will run all night long.
