They are not off to a good start

The Red Sox pitchers are all stinking the place up and giving up a lot of home runs. It's possible that the Mariner batters are way better than anyone gives them credit for but I don't think so.

I think the pitchers came off last years World Series win and they are all a little cocky.

Maybe this week will be the wake-up call they need to face the rest of the season.

I am currently watching the game and the Mariners are leading 10-7 in the 6th inning.

While I agonize over this game, you can click on these:

Yay! They won!

Mitchy Two-Bags managed to hit a three run homer in the ninth to give them a one run lead. Matt Barnes managed to shut down the side and the Red Sox won 7-6.

And for the record, no, I did not watch the game. It started at 10:00 and I was sound asleep well before then.

Tonights game starts at 9:00 so I'm hoping to watch a couple of innings before nodding off. We'll just have to see how it goes.

No one told me we were going to have a hurricane today. Okay, maybe not a hurricane but still, we had 30+ mph wind gusts. It sure made it difficult to do yard work.

There is nothing more frustrating that raking in the wind.

Well, that sucked.

Chris Sale did not have a good day. The Mariners hit a lot of baseballs out of that park and in the end, the Red Sox lost 12-4.

Not a good start to the season but there are 161 games left to play.

And you can bet that I will watch every one that I can.

Except for tonight.

I didn't get very much sleep last night so I expect that I won't be staying awake to watch a 10:00 game.

It's Opening Day!

As far as I'm concerned, this should be a national holiday.

After work, we ran some errands and grabbed some D'Angelos subs for dinner.

Now I am in my sweats on my couch, listening to the worst announcers in all of baseball, Alex Rodriguez, Jessica Mendoza and Matt Vasgersian of ESPN. I hate listening to those guys.

As I type this, it's the start of the second inning and the Red Sox are up 1-0.

I could use three quarters of a billion dollars...

I bought a Powerball ticket on my way home today. I don't expect to win because, well, I have no luck, but I figured tossing $2.00 out the window on a chance to win $750 million was a pretty good investment

Besides, if I win, I'll be able to take care of all the people and places that have meaning to me. I'll also be able to take care of me.

It is, after all, all about me...

Tomorrow at 7:00 pm, the Red Sox start their season.

Just wanted to let you know that.

Here's a few words.

I don't have much to say so here are some pictures to fill the space.

Found this on the interwebs and it made me smile:

That is not an inaccurate statement.

Over the last week or so, Firefox has been used to read this blather more than any other browser:

Not that it matters or anything.

The Red Sox played their final Spring Training game today and managed to get their collective asses kicked. Hopefully they play a lot better starting on Thursday.

Analog to Digital

Several months ago, our youngest son took our ancient video camera. I'm not entirely sure why he would want a video camera but he said something about being creative and making movies or something.

Whatever. It's not like we were using it for anything.

Today, he called me to find out if I knew how to get an analog video camera hooked up to a digital computer. He had been calling every electronics store in New Hampshire trying to find a RCA to USB conversion device.

Kids, sit back and let me tell you about that old timey video standard, analog.

I told him I had a few old video cards that might go into an old desktop computer but the problem is, it would have to ba an old computer with ISA or PCI slots.

Then I told him I still had an old stand-alone DVD recorder that had RCA IN. Perhaps he could burn DVDs directly from the camera. He said that would be great!

I'm not entirely sure he understands that this will require him to play the movie in real time while recording it. It's a pain in the ass to sit there pushing play & record and then waiting for the hour or so for the DVD to record.

Oh well, artists have to suffer for their art I guess.

Oil changes and yard work

The oil has been changed on the lawn tractor and the snow blower. Next weekend will be the lawn mower and the generator.

If you want your small engines to keep running, you need to keep them well-lubed. Changing the oil is the best thing you can do for your machines.

No baseball today because they are traveling to Arizona.

They play the Cubs tomorrow at 9:00pm and NESN will carry it. I'll get to watch an hour or so of that game.

Tuesday's game is at 3:00 and even though NESN is carry it, I'll be working so no game for me.

There will be no game on Wednesday but on Thursday, at 7:00pm, their season kicks off when they start a four game series against the Mariners out in Seattle.

I have high hopes that 2019 will go as well as 2018 did.

And just like that, she's gone.

At 4:30 this morning, we drove our daughter and her little angel to the airport so she could return to the grind of school.

As for last night, we decided that some sneaker shopping and then dinner out would be a good idea. I knew we wouldn't get home until well after 8:00 and by then, I was in no mood to type up anything or go looking for interesting links.

As for my student, she and her doggie arrived back in Iowa safe and sound.

I spent most of the day with that "I wish I had gotten more sleep last night" feeling going on in my brain.

When the dogs get you up at 3:00 in the morning and you can't go back to bed, your motivation to do things is pretty much shot by 8:00 in the morning and it doesn't make for a very productive day.

The Red Sox won todays game against the Pirates. Now they pack up and head of to Arizona to play the Cubs in the Cactus league.

The reason they are playing their last two spring training game in Arizona is because they start their season against the Mariners and Arizona is closer to Seattle than Florida.

In other Red Sox news, they managed to negotiate a five year extension with Chris Sale. He has proven to be a great pitcher and the contract that they negotiated pays him well but allows the team to stay below the luxury tax.

Don't get me wrong, the guy is getting paid a shitload of money to play a game but it's a game he plays well.

Forgive my typos. I'm tried and a little punchy.

Things to do this evening

Things to do and places to be mean this is all you get.

Get off the internet and go do something fun.

Thursday, March 21, 2019

Baseball games are starting to get interesting.

The teams have sent a lot of their youngsters back home to the minor leagues and the regular players are starting to get into the swing of things. This means the games are starting to get interesting and have some meaning.

Not much meaning but they are at least being played by the team that will be on the field next week.

The Donald needs to stop this.

I get it, he hates John McCain. He always has.

I'm not sure why he hates him but he said things about him during the campaign that were out of line and he is continuing to say things about him that are not only out of line, they are petty, vicious and uncalled for.

Trumps behavior is nothing more than an attack on McCain, his widow and family. It's nasty and it just verifies that The Donald is an asshole. It's also the main reason I refused to vote for him in 2016.

Oh, and he should also recognize that veterans are taking offense. It's only a matter of time before the active duty personnel begin to take offense.

Snow or no snow

Looks like the weather dweebs have decided we are still having a storm but it's going to be mainly rain. It will start on Thursday afternoon and end early Saturday morning. We may see a little snow but nothing much.

So much for the whole "nor'easter" thing.

I am currently watching the Orioles play the Red Sox and the Red Sox are down 1-0. I'm going to stop typing and start watching.

It's March...

...and they are predicting a nor'easter on Friday night/Saturday morning.

You gotta love New England.

The Red Sox got rained out today so no baseball for me to whine about missing.

This is almost the dumbest thing I've ever heard a politician say.

Look, I never owned a slave and no one I know has ever picked cotton while being whipped.

Promising people money when you are running for office is akin to buying votes and I'm pretty sure that's illegal.

For the record, the dumbest thing I ever heard a politician say was during one of the Republican debates in 2008 when the candidates were asked if the believed in creationism or evolution and most of them chose creationism.

One of them even said that he believed that the planet was only 6,000 years old.

That was the dumbest thing I ever heard.

Sometimes things go wrong

This morning at work, one of the network switches that controls some vital services failed. This caused an internet outage for a few hours.

You would have thought the world stopped spinning. Apparently a lot of people can't live without the internet.

As for me, I turned my phone into a hotspot and surfed the internet like I always do.

The Red Sox announced today that Pedroia will be starting the season on the disabled list because they want him to spend a bit more time rehabbing. Pedroia today announced that he is ready to go and "they are afraid".

This may sound like blasphemy to most Red Sox fans but it's time for Pedroia to retire.

Baseball is a competitive sport. The teams compete against each other for wins while the players compete against each other for a spot on the team. You want the best player on the field and for the last few years, Pedroia has not been the best player on the field.

Mucking the stables

My back yard, aka; The Dogs Latrine, is finally free of snow and mud. That meant I could go clean up the winter leavings.

I've only got one thing to say - "My dog poops a lot."

And by "a lot", I'm talking both in terms of the amount of poop per event and the total number of events.

You would think I had a herd of cattle instead of one dog.

The Red Sox won and lost again today.

They had split-squad games and the one on NESN was against the Rays. That was the game they won and it was a pretty good game. Price was scheduled to pitch but he bowed out because he was sick. Instead, Brian Johnson started and he threw a pretty good game.

Johnson will make the team but he'll be a long reliever. He's got good stuff but the starters are all lined up and ready to go. There is no way he's going to take a slot from Sale, Price, Porcello, Evoldi or Rodriguez.

If one of those guys goes down, Johnson is capable of stepping up and starting.

It's good to have a guy like that on the team.

And she's home

Last night my wife and I drove down to the airport to retrieve our daughter and her little companion, The Small Emergency Backup Dog.

She is glad to be home for the week, away from school and it's pressures. She is at a point in her education where she is close to finishing up the majority of the book learnin' and moving on to the practical stuff in the form of rotations at various veterinary facilities.

The pressures on her and her classmates are pretty substantial. Also, the rotations go through the summer so this week is probably the last week she will be home until she graduates in a year.

It's nice to have her home.

Also, The Large Main Dog seems pleased to have his girlfriend/playmate home. I've already decided that he's probably going to need daily doses of anti-inflammatory meds to ease the joint pains he's going to be suffering. The two of them act like puppies when they get together and he's kinda old for that level of activity.

As for me, I'm tired.

We didn't get home until almost 11:00 and I didn't fall asleep until midnight. Those of you that know me know that is waaaayyyy past my bedtime.

I completed a task today that's been on my list of things to do for the last couple of months - I replaced all ten rollers on my garage door.

The bearings on all of the roller were completely shot and with no bearings, the wheels wobbled & squealed. The door sounded like something out of a horror movie when it went up and down.

Now it sounds like a garage door.

The Red Sox hosted the Atlanta Braves today and I was able to watch.

Chris Sale struck out 7 over 4 innings and looked pretty damned good. Pedroia managed to play 4 innings. His bating isn't quite were it used to be but that will improve in time. Lets face it, the guy hasn't played in a baseball game since last May.

Anyways, today's game was a good game to watch. The Red Sox won 6-1.

I chatted with my Florida buddy, Walt, but he wasn't at the game. They had visitors so he sold his seats to today's game.

That did not go well.

The Red Sox played the Yankees today and they ended up getting their ass kicked, 14-1.

I really hope things improve for them over the next two weeks because on the 27th, they are flying out to Seattle to open the season against the Mariners on the 28th.

I'm not shocked or upset

The whole "rich people bribing other people to get their kid into a good school" thing should not be a shock to anybody and, too be honest with you, it probably shouldn't piss you off either. It's what rich people do. If you were rich, you would do the same thing.

What should piss you off is that the whole scam was based on a charity. That means the rich people were able to write-off the bribe as a charitable donation. In the long run, that really means that us taxpayers actually paid the bribe.

That pisses me off.

The Red Sox and the Tigers tied 4-4 today. I didn't pay any attention to the game because, well, I kind of forgot it was being played and I never checked in on the interwebs to see what was going on.

What can I say, I've always been a little forgetful.

No more irradiation days

I got my test results back and they are the same as the last two times I've done this. No problems whatsoever. Everything looks good.

I'm calling my doctor and telling him I'm done with this program.

I was trading some emails within a group I belong to and one of the participants had the following email signature (I X’d out the name and school):

Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxx
pronouns: she/her
Information Security Engineer
Xxxxxxxxx Xx Xxxxxxxxxx University

Is this really a thing now? Have we reached a point in our society where it’s necessary to tell people what biological identifiers they should use when addressing you?

This is a sign of insanity.

Irradiation Day

My doctor has me on some special program where every year, I go to Bay State Medical and they do a low power CT scan on my lungs. I guess that since I smoked for all those years, they want to keep track of my lungs and make sure I don't have some cancer or something.

Today was the day I went and got my fancy-shmancy CT scan. It was also the day I decided that I've had about enough of this.

When the results come back, I'll look at them and if they are same as the last two times I've done this, I'm going to say that's enough of this shit. I'm not going to get irradiated every year for no reason.

After I was done being lit up by a big machine, I planned on going to the airport to fly. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing pretty well up there. Combined with my time change exhaustion, I decided that trying to aviate was a bad idea.

Instead I spent a bit of time chatting with people up there and then visiting with my buddy Jimmy and his wife.

After that it was home to continue my quest to stay awake.

This time change is killing

It's 7:45pm and I feel like I should be in bed, asleep. When I finally do go to bed at 10:00pm, I'll lay there, wide awake because it will feel like it's only 8:00pm.

My brain isn't handling this very well. Maybe it's a good thing I'm not planning on flying this week.

I did not shovel my entire driveway

I'm really hoping that I didn't make a mistake by not shoveling all of my driveway. If it freezes solid tonight, tomorrow morning is going to be interesting.

I shoveled the top half because I figure if it does freeze, I'll have a landing zone so I don't slide into my garage.

Last thing I want to do is slide into my garage.

Well, the Red Sox lost another one. This losing thing is starting to get old.

I really hope it isn't any indication of what the season will be like.

No planes available

I checked the rental sight this morning and there were no aircraft available to rent. That's distressing because today was one of those days where the weather was perfect for flying.

Oh well.

Fortunately, I have plenty of vacation time and spring is coming. One thing I want to do is work with my instructor and get my complex (landing gear) and high-performance (over 200hp) endorsements. That will open up a new level of aircraft for me to fly.

I also want to get checked out in a high-wing Cessna. Those are great for sight-seeing because the wing is not in the way of your view.

The Red Sox managed to get their ass kicked again, this time by the Mets. They lost 10-2 this afternoon.

Tomorrow they take on the Rays.

Chilly but busy day

The next phase of my plan at the college was successfully implemented this week when we implemented multi-factor authentication for all faculty and staff. The rollout has gone very well but as with any change, there are minor issues that need to be resolved and my days are spent being the chief resolver.

I'm guessing that about 95% of the folks have had no issues and are perfectly happy using it. They installed a small app on their phone and when they go to log on to our network, they enter their ID, their password and then click a button labeled "Push". That send a notice to the application on their phone and they can either approve of deny the log on.

Of the other 5% most of them are having simple problems that are resolved with a little extra "friendly training". Some of them live in areas with little or no cell connection. Other simply do not have a modern cell phone capable of running the application or even accepting a text message. We work thing out for them on a individual basis.

The remaining folks are those who simply hate anything new. They say things like "Why do I have to do this?" or "I don't understand what good this does. It's just makes it hard." or my personal favorite, "I'm not using my personal phone for any business!"

It's those people that I'm going to give those annoying RSA tokens to. If you've never seen one, this is what they look like:

That six digit number changes every few minutes and it's difficult at best to see it in a dimly lit room. What makes them truly annoying is if the number changes when you are in the middle of typing it in, your log in is rejected and you have to start all over again.

We had those at my last job and they sucked. I figure after using those things for a few weeks, they'll decide maybe the app isn't a bad idea after all.

I did manage to pay attention to the Red Sox game today and they lost to the Twins 12-1. The Twins showed up with some series hitters and they hit a what I would call "a shitload" of home runs.

Hopefully they start to get their act together soon because opening day is in 21 days.

The cold is back

It didn't get above freezing today and the next few days don't look much better.

All I can say is, "Thank goodness we had our furnace replaced this past fall!"

Our heating system does more than just supply heat, it also supplies hot water. The old furnace was incapable of delivering both at the same time so we used to judge our shower/bath times on whether or not the heat was on. Even then, we would end up with luke-warm or cold water at some point during our shower.

The new furnace does both quite well and we no longer have to worry about cold showers. When the temps drop into the teens or lower, the heat is on. No matter how efficient your furnace or how well insulated your house is, the heat will be on. We still get nice hot showers.

It's nice finally living in the 21st century instead of the 19th century.

The Red Sox lost to the Pirates today but that's not the big news.

This is the big news.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Wright may have just finalized his career. This is a bad look for a guy who was suspended last year for domestic abuse.

I'm sure that at some point after the All Star break, the Red Sox will fit him into the rotation just to see what he can do but I suspect it won't last. He will have missed half the season and he probably won't be in the best of shape.

The last thing they need is a distraction or problem in the club house.

A second human has been cured of HIV

Back in 2007, a person who was HIV positive was given a stem cell transplant. That person, known as the Berlin Patient, has been HIV free since the transplant.

Doctors in England recently gave a second person a similar stem cell transplant and that person, known as the London Patient, has been HIV free for the last 18 months.

Looks like there is going to be some serious research done on this particular stem cell transplant and if things work out, this just might be a cure for a terrible disease.

I love shit like this. It fascinates me when scientists and doctors suddenly discover something that cures an incurable disease.

The Red Sox beat the Nationals today and I did not pay any attention to it. I was a little busy doing work things and I had no extra cycles for baseball.

I'm hoping to pay attention tomorrow when they play the Pirates.

Seems like everytime I read the news, I get bored. There just doesn't seem to be anything funny going on anymore.

And today they kicked ass

Well, not really. The Red Sox managed to beat the Twins 9-7 so it's not really an ass kicking but it's a win and I'll take it.

According to the TV baseball nerds, Pedroia is about a week away from getting into a game. I think Pedroia is as far away as the doctors tell him he is.

After what happened last year, I'm kind of hoping he will not be playing baseball until the doctors tell him he is ready to play baseball. He is a good second baseman when he is healthy but he hasn't been healthy for three seasons. He needs to be completely healed before he steps up to play.

Quiet day today. My wife had to work for a fair junk of it so it was just The Dog and I left to watch baseball.

I set up for the pending snow by moving my snowblower behind my car at the door. They are predicting between 5 and 8 inches so I'm anticipating 3 or 4 inches. No matter how much there is, I'll be using the snowblower because I'm old and I don't feel like shoveling.

Wow, they got their ass kicked!

The Red Sox lost to the Orioles 9-1 this afternoon and that was with most of their main players. I'm hoping it's not an indicator of the coming season.

As I said yesterday, I decided to stop and visit with some friends at a local victualer. When I got home, I was not in the mood to type up any words or look for any links.

I did manage to stay awake until around 9:00 when I fell sound asleep on my couch. The Dog woke me at 10:00 because, well, he's a dog and he doesn't have opposable thumbs. He needed my to open the door for him so he could go out.

After we had both answered nature's call, it was off to bed where I did not get a good night's sleep.

I find that as I age, I don't handle beer like I used to and instead of making me sleep like a baby, it makes my sleep like a colicy baby.
