Still no collusion

For almost two years, a special investigator has been trying to find out if Donald Trump "colluded" (whatever that means) with the Russians to win the election.

Two years is a long time to be looking into one thing.

Robert Mueller has the full force of the Justice Department, which includes the FBI, at his disposal and he has been arresting people for all kinds of things like lying to congress, lying to the FBI, etc... but no one has been arrested for working with a foreign government to overthrow the American government.

No one.

Because it's looking like Mueller isn't going to return any legal charges against The Donald, the democrats have begun their own investigation and for the last day or two, they've been conducting a public questioning Trump's former lawyer. A lawyer, by the way, who is one of those guys that was arrested, charged with lying to congress and found guilty.

Leaving aside the whole, "He's a convicted liar!" thing, I want to know what happened to the attorney/client privilege that our legal system functions under. That's the one where your attorney cannot be compelled to give testimony against you.

I'm not entirely sure I like where our legal system is heading....

Oh, and for the record, I hold Robert Mueller in the highest regard. This man has selflessly served our country his entire life with honor and integrity. I will believe him no matter what he says about Trump.

I'm going to watch NESN rerun of game 4 of the NLCS.

They played two games today

There were two split squad games today. One against the Orioles and the other against the Rays. The Red Sox lost both games but as I've said before, this is spring training and these don't count.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the game against the Rays was streamed by a radio station in Tampa Bay. That meant I got to listen to the game while I was at work.

That was nice.

Those winds were fun

To all of the fine intelligent folks that decided to put their trash out last night during those 60mph winds, thanks a lot dingbat.

Those winds didn’t stop at blowing the trash out of your barrel and depositing it in your yard, No siree, that wind had a whole different plan for your trash and it involved all of your neighbors. And their neighbors. And residents of adjoining streets.

If you were foolish enough to put your trash barrel out last night, get off your ass and walk around picking trash up. It's probably yours.

No baseball today because, well, it rained in Florida and no one wanted to play baseball in the rain.

I can't understand why. When I was coaching the kids, they loved playing in the rain. They especially loved sliding into bases. Their moms, however, weren't really happy about it.

I have a webinar to sit through this evening so links will be sparse.

I'm glad I have a generator

Around 12:30 this afternoon, I checked the National Grid outage map and discovered that my power was out. I kept checking it throughout the afternoon and around 3:30, the outage map said I could anticipate a repair around 5:00pm.

Now the one thing I know is that National Grid and I are not in the same time zones. I'm in the eastern time zone and I'm pretty sure they're in the saturn time zone. When they say 5:00pm, they aren't talking about my 5:00pm and I will be very surprised if the power is back by 7:00pm.

So anyways, I came home around 4:00 and fired up the generator.

My house was cold when I walked in. To be precise, it was 56º. My new furnace, being one of those fancy-shmancy high-efficiency furnaces, needs time to bring the house back up to a livable temp.

As I type this, it's just about 5:00pm and the temp is up to around 63º

The problem with the high-efficiency furnace is it burns very little fuel so it takes it's time getting that little boiler back up to temp.

The Donald is on his way to Vietnam where he will swindled by Krazy Kim II. Again.

Let me break that sentence down so I can show you why I think we live in interesting times.
  1. The President of the United States is Donald Trump.
  2. He is traveling to a country that we were at war with for more the 10 years.
  3. So he can meet with the despot of one of the most oppressive countries in the world.
To quote Jeff Dunham - "What the hell!"

Well, National Grid gave me some electricity around 5:30.

Good thing I flew yesterday

Kind of a crappy day today. It started with freezing rain that switched over to regular rain. Once the rain ended, the winds started to come up a bit.

Not the kind of day I want to spend in the air.

This may come as a shock to some of you but yes, I watched some baseball today.

Today I learned that Eduarda Nunez can run like the wind, Jackie Bradley can hit home runs and Dustin Pedroia knows how to use a razor.

Pedroia didn't play but they showed him in the dugout. It took me a minute or two before I realized it was him and then it was only when the announcer said his name.

The Red Sox managed to overcome an early deficit and come back to beat the Twins 8-5. I realize that spring training games have no meaning whatsoever but damn, it's fun to watch them win.

Finally!

I got an hour and fifteen minutes doing take-offs and landings today!

The weather was perfect with nice smooth, dense air that made for excellent take-of climb rates and perfect landing descents.

Since it's a weekend and the weather was perfect for flying, there were a lot of planes in the pattern. That meant we all had to be on our "A" game and pay attention to each other. Fortunately everyone was communicative and agreeable so there were no issues.

I managed to get 5 full stop landings and 1 touch & go. I also headed out over UMass to practice some pattern entry.

Man, that was fun. I've got to do that more often.

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, 'Steve, is it possible that your day could get better?"

Yes. Yes it can get better. I managed to make it home in time to watch 7 innings of Red Sox / Yankees baseball and the Red Sox beat the Yankees 8-5.

Then, my wife suggested we order up some calzones for dinner.

To recap: My day consisted of flying, baseball and calzones.

That, my friends, is pretty damned good day.

While I enjoy my calzones, you can enjoy these links:

I'm still tired.

I'm in the midst of one of my annual insomnia bouts and it's killing me. My eyes feel like they weigh a ton and I've got that fuzzy-brained thing going for me.

I'm hoping I get a good night's sleep tonight because I want to try and fly tomorrow. If I'm tired, I won't fly.

Flying tired is almost as bad as driving drunk.

The Red Sox fielded a team of players that most of us have never heard of and then beat the Northeastern Huskies 6-0. Unfortunately I was unable to watch the game.

Tomorrow at 1:00, they play the Yankees. You can bet I'll be watching that game.

By the way, my on-sight contact is not down there yet.

Walt and his wife decided to delay their trek south for a few days and he assures me he will be able to fill me in on the spring training games very soon.

My wife made her famous chicken-broccoli bake today so dinner awaits.

I'm tired.

I woke up at 3:00 this morning and never really fell back to sleep.

That means I'm kinda tired and this will be kinda short.

So they arrested that bigoted, racist, liar Jussie Smollett this morning.

Hopefully he has to reimburse the city for all the man-hours they invested in his fake investigation and then they put him in jail for a few months. He should also have to apologize to The Donald and anyone who wears one of those red hats. Once he is done with his jail sentence and his world-wide apology tour, he can then be allowed to drift off into obscurity.

Then again, maybe he should just drift off into obscurity. I'm pretty sick and tired of hearing about him.

NESN is my hero.

Last night I got to enjoy watching Brock Holt hit for the cycle, again.

I can't wait for March 28 when the Red Sox will be in Seattle to play the Mariners. Fortunately, the game will be on at 7:00pm instead of the normal west coast 10:00pm crap.

Before then, I'll DVR some spring training games (they are usually on at 1:00) and enjoy watching them when I get home in the evening.

No word yet from my buddy Walter. He may be down there or he may not. I'll wait until next week and then send him a text to see if he's ready to start providing me with his live Red Sox spring training reports.

A few days ago, I mentioned that I thought Jussie Smollett is a liar. Turns out that not only is he a liar, he's a liar who may have committed a hate crime and mail fraud.

For the record, the possibility of mail fraud is why the FBI got involved in this, not because it wa a hate crime.

He's been kicked off his television show and now he's looking at federal prison time for mail fraud as well as filing a false police report.

On top of that, there are dozens of politicians and social warriors out there who are now, once again, deleting their recent stream of social media saying, "Everyone who isn't black is a racist and it's all Trump's fault!"

Am I the only one that remembers all the people that make shit up?

I'm going to watch game 4 of the ALDS. If I recall, the Red Sox win and move on to the ALCS.

Baseball is on!

I discovered last night that NESN is re-running the ALDS between the Red Sox and the Yankees!

Yes, I know it's reruns and yes, I know what happens during each game but it's still baseball and I'm loving it.

Baseball reruns are way better than new episodes of Jeopardy.

If you're interested, game 3 will be on tonight at 7:00

I'm running out of DVRs

I've watched every episode of How The Universe Works, every episode of Last Man Standing and every episode of Gold Rush. I am clean out of DVRs.

Baseball better start soon or I might have to do something other than sitting on my ass watching television.

I don't know if we need a wall on our southern border. I don't know if there are hoards of criminals crossing into the United States or not but I do know that we have been talking about illegal immigrants since Bill Clinton was President.

Most of you will find this hard to believe but at one time, the Democrats were all for taking a hard stand against illegal immigrants. As a matter of fact, Clinton's exact words were, "The simple fact is that we must not and we will not surrender our borders to those who wish to exploit our history of compassion and justice."

If you find that hard to believe, wait until I tell you that at one time, the Republicans were all for letting the immigrants in! George W. Bush was the one who coined the term "temporary workers" and suggested that we needed to make it easier for immigrants to come to this country.

Like I said, I have no idea if we need a wall. What I do know is that this country needs to take a long hard look at who is wandering in and why they are wandering in. We have come to this point in our history because congress has not been able to come up with a set of workable immigration laws.

It's so bad the Obama had to use his powers of executive action to create the Dreamer program.

Congress, not the President, should be doing something about this problem and until they do, The Donald is going to do what he wants to do.

I have a plane reserved for tomorrow morning but something tells me the weather is not going to cooperate and I won't be flying.

Finally got my haircut.

I am basically an old, fat, bald guy and for the record, that's not a bad thing. When my father was my age, he had been dead for five years.

I could probably do something abut my weight but I'm old and don't feel like it. Besides, I put on the weight after I quit smoking so if figure that's a pretty good trade-off.

I can't do anything about my age. It is what it is. I'm not in pain, my joints work just fine and I can still do simple math.

My lack of hair is something that I don't really care about. As a matter of fact, I would almost prefer to just shave it all off and be done with it. For most of my youth, I had long hair because it was the 70s and it was what teenagers did back then.

In 1976, when I graduated from high school, I went to a barbershop and said, "Cut it all off."

When I came home, my father was the happiest guy in the world. He hated my long hair.

And as it turns out, so did I. I quickly learned that taking care of short hair is a lot easier than taking care of long hair.

To get to the point, I've been saying for the last few weeks that I need to get my hair cut. My wife got sick and tired of listening to me and told me, "Go get it cut then!"

So I did.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Jussie Smollett is a liar

The FBI and Chicago Police arrested two men today for attacking an actor name Jussie Smollett.

Smollett claimed he was attacked by two white men who screamed homophobic and racist taunts at him and then told him "This is MAGA country". He also said they were wearing MAGA hats.

Unfortunately for Smollett, the two men arrested are brothers from Nigeria who are black. And amazingly enough, they work on the same show that he works on.

Not sure how that plays into his "racist and homophobic" narrative.

I would hope that the FBI and the Chicago Police would press appropriate charges against anyone involved in this attack, including the planners. I would also hope they charge anyone who made false statements as well.

The college didn't open until 10:00 this morning to give the facilities guys time to get the parking lots cleared. I went in for 9:00 so I could get a good parking spot.

A man has got to have his priorities in order.

So The Beast made reasonably quick work of my driveway this morning.

Don't get me wrong, it was a struggle because the snow was more like ice and water but in the end, I was able to get it all cleared off.

Unfortunately, I'm old and tired so struggling with that snow has left me a bit sore.

I'll live.

Half day off

The school shut down at noon today and sent us all home.

Have I mentioned that I like this job?

I did not clear my driveway today. I'm waiting until tomorrow morning when this is all supposed to be done.

My snowblower, The Beast, has never let me down and I'm really hoping tomorrow isn't the day it decides to fail me.

Every season, I clean its air filter, replace its fuel filter, change its oil and lubricate its joints so I'm not concerned it will fail because of abuse. I'm concerned it will fail because that four inches of snow followed by sleet and freezing rain might be too much for it to handle.

I guess I'll know tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow is the date that pitchers and catchers are supposed to report to the Red Sox spring training facility. Fortunately, all the sports reporters from NESN, WEEI, The Globe, The Republican and The Herald are all down there now, making bad videos an d taking bad pictures of what looks like the entire team working out.

I guess they are all raring to go.

Turns out I'm not alone

According to the news I saw all day today, everyone that did their taxes recently has discovered that they are getting way less back or they owe more than they've already paid.

Turns out the Trump Tax Cuts aren't really as good as Trump claimed they were.

Imagine that - The Donald exaggerated about something. Who would have thought....

I hate doing our taxes.

Once again, we owe the government more money than we have already paid them and it kind of pisses me off.

You would think that after all the bullshit talk about the bullshit "tax break", I wouldn't have to put up with this bullshit but you would be wrong.

There are still some things that TurboTax tells me are being worked out so I'm going to wait until some time around the first week of April. I'll redo my taxes then to see if I've missed anything and/or the government has resolved any of the issues they are trying to resolve.

So after a little more than a year of trying to be the best host and victualer he can be, my friend John has decided it was time to call it quits on his endeavor. He closed the Tap Room last night and won't be reopening it.

He is in the process of putting it up for sale so hopefully something comes of that and he can move on with his life.

I kind of wish I liked basketball because this lack of sports thing is kind of a pain in the ass.

I spent my afternoon watching DVRs snd I am now out of DVRs.

Baseball is coming back!

Pitchers and catchers first workout is this coming Wednesday and the full team will hold their first workout the following Monday.

I've warned my wife that baseball season is fast approaching. Her exact words to me were, "That's nice. I've got Netflix."

She could care less about baseball.

Silly person, she doesn't know what she's missing.

I'm going to remind everyone that this woman spent 30 years telling everyone she was "Native American". She also spent her entire 2016 re-election campaign for the US Senate telling everyone who would listen that she was not running for President in 2020, implying that she intended to serve the citizens of Massachusetts for her full 6 year term.

If you haven't been counting, let me point out those are two bald-faced lies. Lies, by the way, that she can't push off with politician-babble. If someone asks her, "Did you claim to be indian?" she has no choice but to either say, "Yes" or redirect the question over to some other subject like, "Trump is bad! Bad!"

If someone asks her, "Did you say you were not running for President in 2020? she has no choice but to either say, "Yes" or redirect the question over to some other subject like, "He's very bad! Bad I tell ya!"

I have never been a fan of her and if she ends up as the democrats candidate, we will all get to enjoy another four years of the instability and insanity that is Trump.

I would like some other choice than Trump or Warren.

Another thing I want to bring up is this whole thing we have going on now where someone digs up a picture of an 18 yer old kid from 30 years ago and then hands out torches & pitchforks to the lynch mob.

If someone looks at a picture of a 18 year old kid in black face and says, "I'm offended by that!", my reaction is, "And....?"

If the now 50 year old guy says, "I'm sorry I did that 30 years ago", that should be the end of it. If the mob says, "Yea, but I'm offended and he needs to be punished!" my reaction is, "Why? He apologized and you should move on."

The whole idea of punishing people because someone, somewhere, is offended stinks of injustice. If you don't like someone, go hang out with people you do like. Trust me, you'll be a lot happier.

Oh, and if I haven't brought enough crappy news for you to digest, let me remind you that the federal government is currently scheduled to shut down again on February 15th.

Another childhood hero is gone.

As a kid, I not only played baseball, I also collected baseball cards. I had shoe boxes filled with cards and I remember hours spent trading and comparing cards with my friends. There were four coveted cards and I had three of them: Carl Yastrzemski, Mickey Mantle and Frank Robinson.

For the record, the fourth card was Ted Williams but no one had him. We were all 2 years old when he retired in 1960 so only one kid had his card. And he wasn't giving it up.

Frank was a not only a great ball player and manager, he was gentlemen. Personally, I think the sports world could use more Frank Robinsons.

No flying tomorrow

Late last week I said I was kind of eyeballin' Wednesday to maybe get some flying time in. Unfortunately, the weather does not look all that great.

Guess I won't be buzzin' the tower tomorrow.

It's been an interesting offseason for several high-level free agent baseball players.

Craig Kimbrel, the Red Sox 2018 closer, is still on the market and the Red Sox still need a closer so I can't but wonder if he doesn't end back on the Red Sox for 2019.

Bryce Harper, an outfielder from the 2018 Nationals is also still on the market. Problem is, he's an outfielder and there just isn't a lot of demand for outfielders. He can hit the ball a ton so his bat is in demand but he want's way too much money.

Manny Machado, the third baseman from the 2018 Orioles/Dodgers can't seem to find a landing spot but he's got a couple of issues: he wants a lot of money and he's kind of a dingbat.

I suspect all three will find a job but probably not until March.

As for the Red Sox, they have a couple of pitchers that could transition quite nicely into the closer role but they also like Kimbrel because he's a known player who fits nicely into the team dynamic.

Time will tell.

Nine days until Pitchers and Catchers

Red Sox pitchers and catchers report to the spring training facility in Fort Meyers on February 13th. Five days later, the rest of the players are scheduled to report.

The reality is that almost every player reports on the 13th or the 14th and starts working out. It's on the 18th that the regimen begins and the team structured workouts begin in earnest.

Then, on the 22nd, they play there first "game" against the Northeastern Huskies. This is their traditional first scrimmage and NESN usually carries it. You can bet I'll DVR it so I can watch it in the evening.

Until then, I have nothing but DVRs to watch.

Speaking of the SuperB owl, The Detroit Free Press wanted the world to know that the Lions are undefeated in the 53 SuperB owls.

Also, the people in New Orleans are not happy.

All that aside and despite the low scoring, the game was a good game to watch. Both coaches were able to use their defensive lines to control the game and the offensive lines were stellar at protecting their quarterbacks.

It certainly kept my attention right up until the final down.

Then I immediately went to bed because I could care less about all the talking heads asking the players and coaches a bunch of meaningless questions.

As for the commercials, there were a few good ones. I particularly enjoyed the one for the NFL's 100th Anniversary. It made me laugh.

It's warming up a bit

It was 41º in Ames Iowa today so I assume my daughter is not freezing her butt off anymore.

We managed to get up to 29º today which, while still below freezing, is way better than -7º

They say that tomorrow will be in the low 40s, Monday will be in the upper 40s and Tuesday will be in the lower 50s. I figure we'll all be walking around in shorts and t-shirts by then.

Or maybe not.

I need to go flying

I'm jonesin' for some time in the air but the weather has been working against me.

I won't fly in high winds and I won't fly in extreme cold. It's no fun to fly in either of those two extremes and the reason I fly is to have fun.

I'm kind of eyeballing next Wednesday when the winds are predicted to be 7mph and the temps are predicted to be in the low 40s. The problem is that predictions are just guesses based on fluid dynamics.

In other words, no one knows what the weather is going to be 5 days from today.

We are now 12 days away from Pitchers and Catchers reporting to spring training. We are now 21 days away from the first workout game when the Red Sox will play their traditional first spring training game against the Northeastern Huskies.

This has been your official spring training update.
