Still burning that vacation time

Took a half day today and managed to get my lawn mowed. That means I have limited responsibilities this weekend and should be able to enjoy the upcoming family time slated for this weekend.

Baseball was postponed yesterday because of the weather. They'll play the game on August 3rd. As for tonight, it looks like they'll get the game in since there is no bad weather moving through or into New York City.

The Dogs are enjoying each other's company. It amazes me that they act like they were never apart despite the fact they haven't seen each other for more then 4 months.

The Large Main Dog is getting old and he doesn't move like he used to. The Small Emergency Backup Dog is no longer a puppy so she isn't constantly trying to bite his face off. She treats him with a level of care and gentleness.

Instead of biting his cheeks and ears, she licks him and lays next to him. Instead of trying to rush him away from his food, she stands quietly to the side until he finishes.

He is a good boy and she is a good girl.

I'm going to get some food and then watch some baseball.

Quiet evening.

Yesterday was kind of stressful for my daughter. She was scheduled to fly from Des Moines to Philadelphia and then to Bradley, arriving at 7:00pm. Thanks to the weather, her flight from Philadelphia to Bradley was canceled. Turns out everyone else's flights were canceled as well because planes don't do well in tornados.

Fortunately, she was able to change over to a flight to Chicago and then to Bradley. And she was very fortunate because a lot of people ended up stranded in airports across the country after they also canceled flights out of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark.

Anyways, she and her little angel, The Small Emergency Backup Dog, arrived safe and sound around 10:15 last night and we were all home by 11:20.

If you have been paying attention, you know that is way past my bedtime which means I am now a tired guy.

The Red Sox and the Bruins both lost last night. That means the Red Sox are fast approaching a sub-.500 record and the Stanley Cup finals are now tied 1-1.

No hockey tonight but the Red Sox will be playing the first place Yankees. I would really, really like them to win two of the three games in this series because if they get swept, they will drop below .500 and that will be bad.

Very bad.

I'm going to watch baseball until I fall asleep on my couch.

While I do that, you can do these:

Another busy evening.

I have things to do and fortunately I can get those done while watching baseball.

What I can't do is get them done while surfing the interwebs. That means no extraneous web-a-nizing for me.

No post tonight

I have a webinar on CFIT avoidance and then the Red Sox are on.

For the record, CFIT stands for Controlled Flight Into Terrain. It's where the pilot flies the plane into the ground.

The last thing I want to do is fly my plane into something.

My baseball world is a mess

Dustin Pedroia announced today that he is taking a break and stepping away from baseball indefinitely.

On top of that Bill Buckner died this morning after a dealing with the same disease my mom had.

Pedroia stepping away is not unexpected. The guy hasn't got much of a knee left to walk on and I suspect he is close to needing a wheelchair. Continuing to play baseball is a bad idea.

As for Buckner, he suffered at the hands of the Boston media back in 1986 when the Red Sox were on the cusp of winning a crucial game in the world series. Buckner, playing first, made the Error Seen Round The World when instead of getting the third out of the 10th inning, the ball shot under his glove and between his legs into the outfield.

The media ate him alive for that error and I never understood why. Sure, if he had made the out, they would have taken game 6 and won the series but its baseball - shit happens, there's always tomorrow.

And there was a tomorrow (actually, the day after tomorrow).

There was game 7 when the manager, in his infinite wisdom, decided to put Bruce Hurst (ever heard of him? No, probably not, he wasn't that good) on the mound instead of Dennis 'Oil Can' Boyd (you've probably heard of him because he was pretty good). Why he did that, no one knows and the damned media was too busy trying to lynch Buckner to find out.

The Red Sox played like shit, lost 8-5, the Mets took the series and we all waited another 18 years for a world series win.

Fortunately for all concerned, Buckner made an appearance in Fenway Park on opening day 2008 to throw out the first pitch. He received a two minute standing ovation and threw a strike to Dwight Evans to open the season.

The guy was a great ball player who was defined by one error.

Right now I'm watching some baseball. At 8:00, I will be watching some hockey. The Bruins and the Blues start their best of seven Stanley Cup series this evening.

While I do all of that, you can do these:

They didn't get swept

The Red Sox won today, avoiding a sweep by the Astros.

They are still 6½ games behind the Yankees and 4½ games behind the Rays. Tomorrow they start a three game series against the Indians and I'm really hoping they win all three of those games.

Yes, my legs and back are killing me. To the point where it's almost hard to walk up and down stairs.

Dead man walking

Today we put down carpet tiles on our porch. One hundred and ten carpet tiles, to be precise. In case you were wondering, that covers an area 16' by 14'.

We started in the middle with one edge precisely centered and the other edge one half of a tile away from the center.

In other words, the edge of the north-south tiles aligned with the center of the porch and left a 10 inch space at each end. The east-west tiles however had to be aligned with the center of the tile on the center line of the run. The left an 11 inch space at each edge.

I'd like to say it took a lot of cursing but it actually went pretty well. What it did take, however, was quite a bit of the day.

My knees and back are killing me and I suspect tomorrow is going to really suck. But more importantly, the porch is once again usable and we can sit out there when the weather is nice.

If you don't have a screened porch, you should get one. They are great. No bugs and plenty of breezes make for excellent summer evenings.

The Red Sox lost last night because, well, too be honest with you, they played like a rec-league team. They made three errors which is three more than they usually make in a game.

They ended up losing the game 4-3 and wasting a pretty good outing by Sale.

Hopefully tonight goes a little better. Price is pitching and I'm hoping they remember how to hit and field.

Baseball is on at 7:00 tonight and I need to go eat dinner before then. I'm also going to take several ibuprofen and maybe some heroin.

Another half day off

I managed to use all of my vacation so now I won't lose any when the fiscal year ends on June 30.

I hate losing vacation time.

Baseball will be played at 8:00 tonight. That means I'll probably be sound asleep well before the 8th inning.

They start a three game series against the Astros tonight and I'm really hoping they win all three games.

You gotta have stretch goals....

They won this afternoon

I had to watch the game on gameday because, well, my office doesn't have cable.

I should talk to my boss about that.

Man, they sucked last night

The Red Sox got their ass kicked last night and I can't blame Rodriguez. He pitched okay but the Blue Jays were swinging the bats like maniacs. They hit everything he threw and they hit it far.

Guess we'll see what they do tonight.

Late post

I got home a little late today. Not because of work but because I saw a neighbor as I was driving home and I stopped to talk to him for a bit. That pushed back the dinner making gig I had planned.

Dinner was burgers but not just any burgers. These were ground sirloin and stuffed with all kinds of good things. Mine was bacon-chedder and my wife had portabella-parmasean. And they are thick like steaks.

Now dinner is done and the Red Sox are on. That means I am done typing.

Not a bad day off

The Red Sox started a four game series against the Blue Jays this afternoon and they won.

By a lot.

Like 12-2 or something like that.

It was Prices first day back after a little stint on the DL (I know it's supposed to be called the IL. Sue me, I don't do well with change) for some elbow soreness and he pitched pretty damned well.

Also, it seemed like the batters were hitting the ball a ton.

Tomorrow Eduardo Rodriguez will be on the mound and I'm hoping he continues to pitch like he has been doing over the last few games.

It was too windy to go flying today but I'm not concerned about that. We have summer hours starting  in June and I'll be off every Wednesday. Hopefully the weather cooperates and I can get some air time on the weekends or on Wednesdays. I have a list of folks that want to go up with me and I won't take anyone unless the weather is perfect.

I also want to learn some new aircraft. I have two types I want to learn - tailwheel and complex.

By learning those two types, I learn new flying skills and give myself some new options. For instance, I want to learn tailwheel because landing a tailwheel teaches you a lot of skill as well as a better feel for the aircraft. I want to learn complex because that includes high power which means faster aircraft with retractable landing gear. That means longer flights in less time and I can get to the Cape in 60 minutes, Long Island in 45 minutes or Lebanon NH in about 30 minutes.

If my finances and the weather holds, I'll be a happy guy.

I wanted to bring up the Game of Throne thing but I have never seen it. I don't know anything about it except it is Days of Our Lives with swords.

I understand that it was a good show that featured a lot of intrigue, blood shed and full-frontal nudity but no car chases or baseball.

My son has it on his PLEX server so maybe I'll give it an episode a watch to see if it's something that interests me.

Time for new flooring

Today was spent stripping the old rug from our porch floor in preparation for a new rug.

As you can see, it's a mess.

I pulled the old carpet up and then set about scraping the double-face tape & paint that was stuck to the floor.

Tomorrow we will order up the replacement flooring and over the next few weeks I will put it down.

Trust me, it will be beautiful.

The Red Sox managed to not get swept by the Astros today.

They won this afternoon 4-3 and not only does that prevent a sweep, it keeps them above .500 and only 4½ games behind the first place Yankees.

The season is still young....

Garage door opener is fixed.

Amazon promised that my new limit switch would arrive this afternoon and thankfully, they came through. Once I had it in my hands, it took me all of 5 minutes to install it and adjust it.

For the record, that kinda pisses me off.

Last Wednesday, I spent 3 hours working on a non-existent door problem. If I had just taken the 5 or 10 minutes to actually trouble-shoot the issue, I would have only spent a total of 15 minutes on this problem. Instead I rushed into it and ended up investing 3 hours for nothing.

Sometimes I wonder where my head is at.

Anyways, the door opener is once again fully operational which means we can open it without getting out of our car in the rain.

That, my friends, is a good thing.

The Red Sox lost last night so the chances of them taking 2 of the 3 games is pretty slim right now.

They play at 7:00 this evening with Valazquez taking the mound. I'm hoping he has one of his, "Holy crap, that guy is good!" days and he blows the Astros away.

You can bet I'll be offering up my sage advice and coaching advice.

The NHL has set the schedule for the Stanley Cup. The first game will be in Boston on Monday, May 27th.

You can bet I'll be doing the PiP thing.

I stayed up too late last night

The Bruins swept the Hurricanes last night and I stayed up to watch the entire game. As we all know, that is way past my bedtime.

The good thing is that the Bruins won and they are now going to get some much needed rest before they start up the best of seven series against either the San Jose Sharks or the St. Louis Blues.

I have a feeling it's going to be the Sharks but what do I know. What I do know is that the Bruins get to rest while their eventual opponent continues to play and tire themselves out.

I took another half day off today just to burn off some vacation time. Not the best of weather but I'm okay with that. I've a lot of things to do this weekend and being able to get a few of them done today means my weekend might not be as busy.

I anticipate the part for my garage door opener will arrive tomorrow so I can get the repaired. Before that I want to get my lawn mowed. I also want to fix some places in my lawn where there are some small sinkholes.

Over the years, we've had several trees cut down and the stumps ground down. Well, the stumps have decayed and the ground has settled. Fortunately, the grass in the sinkhole is growing just fine so all I have to do is dig out the first 4 inches of grass and soil, fill the hole with dirt and place the grass back on it.

Once the ground is level, my lawnmower will no longer sink into it and scalp the grass down to the root.

And on top of all that, let's not forget that there is a baseball game at 7:00 pm tomorrow evening and that isn't going to watch itself.

Turns out I didn't break my garage door.

My garage door is fine but my garage door opener has a problem.

The opener has two small switches at each end of the drive track called a limit switch. Their job is to limit the travel of the door up and down. They stop the door opener from continuing to push the door down once it's reached the floor and they stop the door opener from continuing to pull the door up once it's reached the fully open position.

In my case, a small spring broke on the open limit switch and it no longer stopped the door when it was fully open. The door travelled past "open" to a point where the cables no longer had tension on them and they unraveled from their respective spools.

Since I did not realize what the real problem was, I spent two hours fighting the symptoms and not actually solving the problem. Once I got the door in a situation where the cables were no longer unraveling at a whim, I found there was now too much tension on them to close the door.

At that point, I gave up and told my wife that we were calling the door guys in the morning.

At 3:00 this morning, my dog woke me up because well, we're old and we pee a lot. While I was waiting for him to do his business, I had the revelation that the problem was not a lack of tension from the springs but that maybe the door opener was lifting the door too high.

At 5:30, as soon as the sun started coming up, I went out and sure as hell, I found the broken limit switch.

The door now works, I just have to manually stop it before it gets to the end of the track by pushing the stop button.

I ordered a new limit switch and it will be here on Saturday. As soon as it gets here, I will install it and we will once again have control over our garage door.

There is no baseball tonight but there is hockey.

The Bruins are currently up 3-0 in the best of 7 series. If they win tonight, they move on to the championship game and a shot at winning the Stanley Cup.

Tonights game is in Carolina so the Bruins do not have home ice advantage but that probably won't matter. In the semi's, they had a better record away than at home so hopes are high they will finish off the Hurricanes and get some rest before the finals.

As for the Red Sox, they won last night and continue to maintain a better than .500 record.

They are off tonight while they wait for the Astros to come to town for a three-game series.

The Astros are currently the best team in all of MLB so it would be really nice to see the Red Sox take 2 of the 3 games. That would be a major confidence booster as well as keeping them above .500.

I'm never going to be able to retire

Not a good day for the market:

On May 1st, the DJIA opened at 26,592. Today it closed at 25,324. That's a drop of 1,268 points. Another way to look at it is a drop of 5%.

That's 5% of my retirement account gone in a puff of tariff-infused air.

Thanks Donald. Thanks-a-freakin' lot.

In other news, the readers of this spewage have started using Firefox more than Chrome.

But what I found truly interesting is that during the past week, neither Edge nor Internet Explorer appear anywhere on the list.

On second thought, maybe I can explain it:

Firefox has taken over the usage lead because Chrome is trying too hard to be "the secure browser", Edge flat out sucks and Internet Explorer is a piece of shit.

Yea, that pretty much explains it.

No baseball or hockey tonight so I think I'll watch some DVRs. Maybe I'll binge watch "How the Universe Works".

Happy Mothers Day

To my wife, my sisters, my cousins and my friends that are all mothers, I hope you had an enjoyable and restful day.

Crappy day weather-wise but we still managed to have a decent day. My wife told our kids to not make any surprise visits today so it was just her and I. We went to Outback for lunch and then to Costco to stock up on all of the large things we needed to stock up on.

It turns out going to Costco on Mothers Day is a very popular thing to do because, man, was it crowded.

And a lot of those people were there for social hour. They like to park their large shopping carts in the middle the aisle and chit-chat with each other while the rest of us back up behind them like bodies in the sewers of Paris during the black plague.

I just want to yell at them, "Get your fat ass out of the main aisle! Can't you see I'm trying to get my package of 12 oversized corn muffins and this 3 pound bag of almonds to the checkout!"

Despite a steady rain/drizzle,  the Red Sox played baseball today and they completed the sweep of the Mariners. This improved their record to .537, only 3 games behind the Rays and 2½ behind the Yankees. They are also the current holder of the second wild card slot in the AL.

Granted, it's way too early to think about wild card slots but still, it's nice to now they are in contention.

Then, to make my day even better, the Bruins beat the Hurricanes 6-2 this afternoon. That puts them 2-0 in their best-of-seven series and only two wins away from a trip to the Stanley Cup finals.

The one thing I noticed is that they are once again taking advantage of the power play situations and scoring goals. They must have listened to me.

It's a good day to be a sports fan from Massachusetts.

I am a happy guy

With their 20th win of the season, the Red Sox went above .500 last night.

And then they went and won again this afternoon.

They still have some ground to make up but they are creeping up on the Yankees. I don't really care about the Rays because I don't think they can maintain their wining pace for very much longer.

I'm a happy guy.

Another late post

I spent a bit of time hanging out with Tommy this afternoon. I enjoyed some adult beverages and then I arrived home in time to eat some dinner before I have to provide the Red Sox with my sage coaching advice.

The Bruins won last night even though I was sound asleep at the end of the 2nd period. This is a good thing because the more games they win, the better the chance they have of moving on to the Stanley Cup.

They need to win tonight

The Red Sox won yesterday which put them one game below .500. If they win tonight, their record will be 19 wins, 19 loses and that, my friends, is a .500 record.

It's on to the conference finals for the Bruins

They won the series last night so they will play the Hurricanes for the conference finals. If they win that series, it's on to the Stanley Cup.

As for the Red Sox, not so good. They lost last night.

I will not be happy until they get above .500 and even then, I'm not going to be happy.

They are a far better team then this and should be in first place in the ALEast instead of 6 games behind the freakin' Rays and 4 games behind the Yankees.

It's a channel-flipping evening

The Bruins are playing the Blue Jackets at 7:00 and Red Sox are playing the Orioles at 7:10. That means I will be using my PiP thingee and flipping back & forth so I can provide both teams with my sage advise.

If the Bruins win, they take the best of seven and move on to the semi's against the Carolina Hurricanes.

If the Red Sox win, they will have a .500 record for the first time this season.

You know what would be good? It would be good if they both win.

That would be good.

To quote Charlie Sheen, "Winning!"

Last night, the Bruins managed to win a home game and are now up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series against the Blue Jackets. They still sucked on the power play but they did manage to score 4 goals to the Blue Jackets 3, which, as we all know, is enough to win.

On top of that, the Red Sox beat the crap out of the White Sox 15-2. Most of which they scored in the third inning.

It was a real pleasure watching both those games and to make it even better, I got to do it again this afternoon.

It was a pretty evenly matched game for most of it with the Red Sox and the White Sox going into the eighth inning tied 2-2.

The first batter up was Martinez and he managed hit a really long flyball for the first out.

Second batter up was Devers and he hit into a Ringling Bros kind of triple. He hit the ball over the left fielders head and started to make the turn to second but changed his mind when the throw came in. As he was scrambling back to first, the cutoff guy made a crappy throw to first and Devers turned around to scramble to second. The first baseman chased down the errant throw, picked it up and threw it over the second baseman's head. Devers immediately scrambled off to third.

The third batter up was Chavis and he drew a walk. Runners on first and third.

Fourth batter up was Moreland and he smacked a nice fast single through the infield. Devers scored and Chavis made it to third. Runners on first and third, score was 3-2.

Fifth up was Pearce and he struck out. Runners at first and third, two out, score  3-2.

Sixth batter up was Bradley Jr. and drew a walk. Bases loaded, two out, score 3-2.

Seventh batter up was Sparky Nunez and he hit a crappy little slow roller that hugged the third base line. The third baseman took his chances and prayed that it would roll foul. Turns out he chose poorly because it stayed fair. Chavis scored and everyone else was safe. Bases still loaded, two out, score 4-2.

Eighth batter up was Benintendi and he walked, bringing in Moreland. Bases loaded, two out, score 5-2.

Ninth batter was Bogaerts and he freakin' hit a freakin' grand freakin' slam babeeeeee! Bases empty, two outs, score 9-2.

Tenth batter up was Martinez, again, and he struck out. That ended the top half of the eighth inning. The White Sox failed to answer back in the bottom of the eighth and it was still 9-2 going into the ninth.

Neither team did much of anything in the ninth so the game ended with the Red Sox winning 9-2.

Winning!

Now they head to Baltimore where tomorrow they will start a three game series against the Orioles.

Wow. I got a little wordy there. Sorry about that.

They won last night

Tonight is another evening of multiple sporting events. Red Sox are on at 7:10 and the Bruins are on at 7:15.

The Red Sox still need to get their ass above .500 but they are starting to make headway. Sale pitched a great game last night and the bats were working just fine.

Tonight Rodriguez gets to show us if he can bounce back from a bad outing and the hitters get to show us if they can continue hitting the ball well.

The Bruins and the Blue Jackets are tied 2-2 in their series and they are playing in Boston this evening. Normally, it would make me happy that they were at home but the two games they've lot were at home and the two they won were on the road.

The other thing they need to do is start taking advantage of power plays. I don't think I've seen them score a single point while up a man during this series. And the Blue Jackets have been drawing a lt of penalties. If the Bruins can figure out their power play lines, they'll win the games.

 ⧫

I had to renew my drivers license and I did it over at AAA. Trust me, going to AAA is way more convenient than going to the RMV. Not only are the people a lot nicer, they have a lot more parking.

I got the Real ID license because I don't want to try and get on a plane only to be told, "Sorry, but this ID is not acceptable. You'll have to drive to your destination."

The guy at AAA managed to do exactly what they do at the RMV but without all of the sour attitude and long lines. If you don't have a AAA membership, get one. It's worth it just to avoid going to the registry and dealing with those people.

I'm going to watch those sports things that are on this evening.

Good and Bad

Bad - The Red Sox managed to give the game away in the ninth inning, losing 6-4 on a walk-off.

Good - The Bruins took an early lead and held on to it through all three periods. They sucked on the power plays but they managed to score and win.

And now I'm going to watch some of the Red Sox game.

I say "some" because it's raining out there and I suspect the game will start late, if at all. If it starts late, you can bet I won't be staying awake to watch very much of it.

Another night of multiple sports

Hockey is at 7:30 and baseball is at 8:00. That means another night of flipping back and forth between channels.

The Bruins need to win. They are currently trailing 2-1 in the Best of Seven series and if they lose tonight, they are one game from elimination. If they win tonight, they tie it up 2-2 and stand a chance.

The Red Sox are starting a four game series against the White Sox tonight and both teams are about even in the standings. The White Sox have a slightly better record but they've played fewer games so I suspect they are pretty well matched.

The Red Sox need to continue winning and get their record above .500.

We are coming up on the end of the spring semester which means all the students, including my daughter, are in the midst of finals. It also means that summer is approaching and that means four-day work weeks. Don;'t get me wrong, I feel for the students, specially my daughter, but hey, I get to look forward to every Wednesday off again this summer!

And before you jump on me over the whole three-day-weekend thing, I chose to take Wednesdays because that way I work two days, get a day off, work two days, get two days off. Think about that for a bit and I think you'll see that's not a bad work schedule.

Well, time for me to find something to eat and then settle in for sports.

I really need to start looking at the schedule.

No one told me the Red Sox game was on at 1:00 today!

I missed the game but they won. That means they took all three games against the Athletics and they are now at .452.

It's not above .500 but it's getting closer.

They are on the road to Chicago this evening to start a four game series against the White Sox tomorrow. If they win all four of the games, they will be above .500. I realize it's a stretch goal but hey, I can dream, can't I....

The Bruins are off tonight which is good because watching last nights lose led me to believe they are freaking exhausted. Their first line looked like they were dragging themselves around the ice and they just weren't keeping up with the Blue Jackets.

Maybe a night of rest will give them the energy they need to tie the series because they are currently behind 2-1.
