My baseball world is a mess

Dustin Pedroia announced today that he is taking a break and stepping away from baseball indefinitely.

On top of that Bill Buckner died this morning after a dealing with the same disease my mom had.

Pedroia stepping away is not unexpected. The guy hasn't got much of a knee left to walk on and I suspect he is close to needing a wheelchair. Continuing to play baseball is a bad idea.

As for Buckner, he suffered at the hands of the Boston media back in 1986 when the Red Sox were on the cusp of winning a crucial game in the world series. Buckner, playing first, made the Error Seen Round The World when instead of getting the third out of the 10th inning, the ball shot under his glove and between his legs into the outfield.

The media ate him alive for that error and I never understood why. Sure, if he had made the out, they would have taken game 6 and won the series but its baseball - shit happens, there's always tomorrow.

And there was a tomorrow (actually, the day after tomorrow).

There was game 7 when the manager, in his infinite wisdom, decided to put Bruce Hurst (ever heard of him? No, probably not, he wasn't that good) on the mound instead of Dennis 'Oil Can' Boyd (you've probably heard of him because he was pretty good). Why he did that, no one knows and the damned media was too busy trying to lynch Buckner to find out.

The Red Sox played like shit, lost 8-5, the Mets took the series and we all waited another 18 years for a world series win.

Fortunately for all concerned, Buckner made an appearance in Fenway Park on opening day 2008 to throw out the first pitch. He received a two minute standing ovation and threw a strike to Dwight Evans to open the season.

The guy was a great ball player who was defined by one error.

Right now I'm watching some baseball. At 8:00, I will be watching some hockey. The Bruins and the Blues start their best of seven Stanley Cup series this evening.

While I do all of that, you can do these:
