It's cold. Again.

I don't know if it's another polar vortex or just a swirley but whatever it is, it's cold.

I'm getting a little sick of the cold.

I'm hoping the new shirts arrive today.

During the winter, I wear a particular type of shirt. It is basically a light weight chamois shirt.

I'm not a fan of flannel and I don't like pullovers, I really only like those chamois shirts. I don't like the heavy weights because I feel like I'm wearing a quilt and the medium weights are just as bad.

No sir, I like the light weights. They are warm enough for me and they don't weigh me down.

I also like the shirts that have the button down collar because chamois shirts tend to get gigantic permanent wrinkles and if the collar doesn't button down, it eventually looks like the wings on the Flying Nun's hat.

Anyways, I managed to find the ones I want at Cabela's and I ordered two of them.

The problem with ordering clothes over the internet is you don't know what you got until you get it.

I'm hoping they turn out to be what I want because it turns out that I am actually easy to please.

Can we stop using the catch-phrase "World Class"?

I am sick and tired of hearing companies use the words "World Class" to describe themselves.

What the hell does it mean anyways?

Does it mean that it's the best in the world?

I doubt it.

Best is an opinion, not description. For instance, I think Ford's are best and you think Kia's are best. You are obviously deranged and wrong but far be it from me to correct you and your silly little opinion.

Does it mean that it's world wide?

Big Y uses the phrase "World Class" in the name of it's stores but I'm pretty sure they are a local company.

They should change their name to "Big Y Springfield and Surrounding Communities Class Market".

It's a meaningless and annoying phrase.

Stop using it.

I'm tired.

John says it's because I'm old and, to be honest with you, I can't disagree with him.

Attention people that are not yet old:
Get all the sleep you can because when you get old, your ability to sleep for any length of time goes away.
This has been your notification to people who are not yet old.

When I was a teenager, and even up into my 20s, I could come home at 2:30 in the morning, crawl into bed and sleep until 1:00 in the afternoon. That was some seriously good sleep and I always felt pretty damned good afterwards.

Then I got old and my sleep pattern changed to:

9:00pm-fall asleep
11:00pm-wake up and go pee
11:30pm-fall asleep
2:00am-wake up and go pee
2:30am-fall asleep
5:00am-get woken up by the dog, who needs to go pee
6:30am-go to work
Noon-get some lunch
1:00pm-try to stay awake at desk. Realize I need to go pee
4:00pm-go home and fall asleep in recliner
4:05pm-get woken up by dog who is agitated because I didn't let him out to pee when I got home

As you can see, I rarely get more than 4 hours of sleep but dammit, my urinary tract is working at full speed!

So anyways, I'm tired and I don't feel like spending a lot of time reading "news" websites looking for actual news

It's hard because the stories you read aren't really news. The self-aggrandizing drivel published by the media outlets to make themselves or their chosen politician look good.

It's hard work and requires that I concentrate.

I don't feel like concentrating.

Furniture moving day.

My daughter will be moving back in with us after she graduates. She will be living back home while she pursues her masters degree. Since she is moving back home, she and her mom decided it would be a good time to update her room.

Yesterday, they went shopping for a new bed and found what she wanted. They bought it and had it delivered today.

That means that I spent most of my day moving beds and assorted other furniture.

You see, my daughter got a new bed and that meant the two twin beds she had in her room were now considered surplus. One of them went in the room formerly occupied by my eldest which meant his old bed was now considered surplus.

That meant I had to haul two beds down into the basement to await their fate.

My back is killing me.

No bronze either

The U.S. Hockey team got spanked pretty well by Finland. They ended up losing the Bronze Medal game by a score of 5-0.

I told you that Tuuka Rask was a hell of a goalie.

*

In Red Sox news, they recently contracted with a local boy from West Springfield.

Chris Capuano is a kid who graduated from Cathedral and Duke University before he was drafted by the Diamondbacks back in 1999. He's a pretty good pitcher but he's in his 15th year in the majors so he's no spring chicken.

They offered him a one year contract to pitch out of the bullpen when Ryan Dempster said that he was basically retiring. Hopefully he works out and helps the Red Sox have another excellent season.

No gold but maybe bronze.

Canada was just too much for the U.S. hockey team and they ended up losing 1-0 in the semi-finals. That means Canada will play Sweden in the Gold/Silver medal match and the U.S. will play Finland in the Bronze medal match.

The only issue I see for the U.S. is that the goalie for Finland is Tuuka Rask. He plays for the Boston Bruins and he's a hell of a goalie. Hopefully he'll have a bad day tomorrow and give up a few goals.

All that aside, the real problem with the U.S. loss to Canada is this.

My daughter is home for the weekend and we are expcting my youngest (and his band mates) to blow into town sometime late this evening or very, very early tomorrow morning.

They have a gig out near Framingham tonight and tomorrow they are in Bridgeport, CT. They asked if they could crash at our place so I have a feeling I won't be getting much sleep tonight.

Oh well.

They almost did it.

The US Women's Hockey team was up 2-1 when Canada pulled it's goalie. That was when the US sent the puck rattling down the ice towards Canada's open net and...

...it hit the left post of the net and bounced to the left of the goal.

That was when Canada scored and took the game into overtime.

Had the puck gone into the net, the game probably would have ended in favor of the US with a 3-2 win but it wasn't to be.

Nine minutes into the 20 minute sudden-death overtime, Canada scored and took home the gold medal in women's hockey.

...for some of those famous calcium chloride-filled pantyhose.

Despite using my roof rake religiously, I suspect there is a major ice dam on the north side of my roof. I keep checking our bedroom ceilings for water spots and so far, nothing. But I have a feeling that might change.

If we make it to the weekend without any damage, I'll go up there and chip away at all the icicles. That way I'll be able to see if there is a dam or if it's just a major collection of icicles.

I wonder if Joe Kennedy has anything to say about his new "good friend", President Maduro of Venezuela?

That man has annoyed the crap out of me with his self-effacing commercials making it look like he is a hard working guy bringing relief to the huddled masses.

Bullshit.

He pays himself a salary in excess of half a million dollars to run an organization that might, and I emphasis the word might, give grandma enough oil to make it through a mild December.

As for those commercials, they are nothing more than a clever propaganda tool used by Chavez, and now Maduro, to make it look like they aren't the despotic dictators they really are.

And now, the people of Venezuela are rising up against that regime but Kennedy says nothing. Not a damned thing. He just keeps on cashing his checks and spewing rubbish about how great the leaders of Venezuela are.

Screw you Joe. You're just another pompous Kennedy looking out for what's best for him.

Guess what!

It's gonna snow again tomorrow!

Isn't that great!

....

*

So my friend, and occasional contributor to The Daily News©, Chris, posted on his facebook page that it has been 8 years since his life was forever altered.

I met Chris 12 or 13  years ago when he volunteered to help me coach a bunch of out-of-control middle school baseball players. I'm not sure he knew what he was getting in to but he stuck it out, learned a few things and we became friends.

I pick my friends wisely. I always have and I always will.

I don't have a lot of them but the ones I do have are all of the same type.

My friends are the people you want standing next to you if you ever find yourself in a bad situation.

They are the type of people who will stand back-to-back with you in a dark alley on a bad night.

They won't give you their last $10.00 but they will use it to buy a six pack and commiserate with you.

Chris is one of those people and that is why a lot of us are glad he survived that night and is still around to drive us all just a little nuts.

Okay, now I'm sick of snow.

I'm not entirely sure where the plow guy found those giant chunks of iceberg he left at the end of my driveway but man, those things where heavy.

The Beast had a time of it getting through but, in the end, the plow guy's iceberg chunks were no match for my massive machine.

I'm sorry but the inclusion of professional hockey players on the US Olympic team takes some of the excitement out of the game for me.

There will never be another "Miracle on Ice" because the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team was made up of college kids. As a matter of fact, four of those kids were from Boston University which made it even more exciting.

Watching the games today is no different than watching a NHL game.

My wife, who likes to make fun of me for watching curling, asked where someone would go to learn to curl. I did a little googling and found The Broomstones Curling Club out in Wayland, MA.

As a joke, I was going to sign her up but when I looked around the website, I found this:
Your first half-season curling costs only $130. However, Broomstones Curling Club is currently full and is not accepting new members. We appreciate your interest in curling. Please add yourself to our waiting list.
Holy crap! That's $260.00 for a season membership and I have no idea how long a "season" is. On top of that, they are full and are no longer accepting memberships.

I guess I'm not the only one that likes curling.

And no, I didn't add her to the waiting list. I have better things to spend $260.00 on.

No surgery for my youngest.

We went up to Keene, picked up my youngest and headed back here to go to a doctors appointment at Baystate.

Three weeks ago he wound up at the local hospital up there because his throat hurt and it was constricting to the point where he was having trouble breathing. The ER doctor discovered an abscess on his tonsils and massive swelling of his throat. He put him on an IV filled with antibiotics and got him breathing again.

The following day, he went to see a Ear Nose and Throat guy who lanced the abscess and recommended he see a surgeon to determine if his tonsils should come out.

Long story short, he saw the surgeon and the surgeon said no need for the tonsils to come out.

So now we're home and I'm watching curling.

It's men's curling so it's not as good as women's curling.

In case you don't know, curling is a sport that involves throwing stones down a sheet of ice and then going drinking afterwards. When it comes to women, the curlers are generally young and attractive. The men, however, are basically the 40 year old guys you see at the local bar.

You know the guys - they have two ashtrays on the table, three pitchers of Bud, four glasses and there are probably some empty shot glasses left over from the boilermakers they started with.

Not the most attractive guys but they know how to have a good time.

Another day of working from home.

My wife and I both worked at home today and as usual, we got a lot done without risking any car accidents.

*

At some point during the day, my wife informed me that the dog was having difficulties. Seems that when he went outside to take care of his business, his "package" was dragging in the snow. She asked if I would be so kind as to clear some space in the back yard for him.

So after doing my driveway and raking the snow off my roof, I cleared a path into the back yard and did an area for him to "conduct his business".

I'm a good dog owner.

Last night was one of those nights where I got no good sleep.

I fell asleep at 9:00, woke at 11:00, fell asleep at 11:30, woke at 2:00, fell asleep at 2:30, woke at 4:30, emptied the dishwasher, made the coffee, fell asleep at 5:00 and woke up at 5:30.

I hate those kind of nights. I'm usually asleep at my desk around 2:00 in the afternoon after those kind of nights.

And that is never good for my productivity level...

There is a report going around the financial world about a bizarre coincidence regarding the current Dow Jones Industrial Average and the DJIA from 1928 (The Great Depression).

Here is the chart that has everyone up in arms:

As you can see, the squiggly line from 1928 to 1929 looks a lot like the squiggly line from 2013 to 2014. This has a lot of people in the financial world all in a tizzy and concerned that we're about to enter another depression.

The problem that I see is the depiction of the values instead of the percentage.

The chart from 1928-1929 shows a market drop from 350 points to 200 points. That's a drop of 43% of the value of the DJIA.

The chart from 2013-2014 shows a market drop from 16000 points to 13400 points. That's a drop of 17% of the value of the DJIA.

Now don't get me wrong, 17% is a big hit to most people's retirement portfolios but it's not enough to cause a depression like the 1928 stock market crash did.

Besides, despite what the federal government would have you believe, we're already in a depression. All a 17% drop in the market will do is make it worse for a brief period and then begin the process of growth.

It was on at 5:00 am this morning and since I'm usually up by 4:30, I figured I had plenty time to get up, make the coffee, tune in the TV and settle in to watch an hour of curling.

The Olympics started out boring as hell when they showed an hour of cross country skiing.

I only care about Curling.

I realize that curling, as an Olympic sport, is often the target of ridicule and jest. I understand that some "athletes" think of it as shuffleboard on ice. I know that the late night comedians all make fun of it but dammit, I don't care. As long as there is a Swedish Womans Curling Team, it will be a sport worth watching.

And I will be watching it...

Back in the office today.

I managed to survive my drive into work this morning, despite the fact that the roads had a layer of slushy ice and a whole bunch of idiotic drivers.

At the intersection of Wilbraham and Breckwood, the moron in the rear-wheel drive Ford "Police Intercepter" (Well, that's what it said on the back of the car...) decided he needed to be the ahead of everyone else so he came up in what would normally be the right lane. Today, there was no right lane, just 4 inches of chunky slush.

When the light turned green, he hit the gas and proceeded to pirouette through the intersection.

It was fun to watch for those of us behind him but I'm pretty sure both the guy next to him and the crossing guard weren't all that thrilled. He almost swerved into the car next him and then over-corrected and headed straight for the crossing guard standing on the sidewalk.

Fortunately he took his foot off the gas, changed his underwear and decided to get in line like a good little boy and we all proceeded safely down Wilbraham Road to our respective destinations.

*

Speaking of the crossing guard, I'm going to write a letter to the head crossing guard and let him know that the guy working at Wilbraham and Breckwood is one seriously dedicated and excellent crossing guard.

When I was sitting at the light, waiting for the aforementioned show to begin, I watched the guard step into the road with a snow shovel (which I'm pretty sure is not standard issue for crossing guards) and start shoveling all the crap off the crosswalk so his charges would have a clear place to walk.

I thought that was pretty decent of him.

I kind of like working from home

I'm thinking that this working from home thing is a pretty damned good idea and I should do it more often.

I was on a conference call with about forty individuals this morning and none of them were at the office. We were sharing computer screens and chatting about stuff when it occurred to me that we live in some pretty cool times.

When I was a kid, my father went to work. There were no "snow days" and no ability to work at home, there was only work. Now, I can plug my computer into my network at home, connect to the network at the office, transfer my phone over to my computer and it's just like I was sitting at my desk.

You gotta love technology.

*

From what I can tell, we got between 8 and 10 inches of snow. This is the first time this winter the weather dweebs have been remotely close to being correct with their predictions.

My driveway is clean and my taxes are done.

It stunk in more ways than one.

Despite my earlier statements, I did watch almost all of the super bowl.

Oops. I'm sorry. I forgot. I'm not allowed to say "super bowl". Let me start over.

...

Despite my earlier statements, I did indeed watch almost all of that massive waste of time and energy that the NFL put on last night.

Right from the very start it was a fiasco for the Broncos when the center decided to snap the ball into the end zone and Denver's offensive line decided to let every Seahawk on the field run into the end zone after the ball. Turns out that the one lone Bronco in the end zone managed to fall on the ball first and it resulted in a 2 point touch-back instead of a 6 point touchdown.

After that, it became obvious that Payton Manning most have flown into New Jersey with his stash of legal Colorado weed because he was throwing the football like a guy who was fully baked. When he threw the ball, I don't think he had a single clue as to where it was going. he was throwing it all over the place.

Well, not all over the place, just to anyone wearing a white/green jersey.

But that's not the worst part of the so-called "super game". (Actually, I like Stephen Colbert's name for it - "The Superb Owl")

The worst part were all the lame commercials.

The one thing that you could always count on the day after the Superb Owl was all the talk in the office about the commercials. Everyone would tell you what they thought was the best one, which was the worst one and how good the Budweiser commercials were.

Today, no one even mentioned the commercials. All anyone would talk about was the look on Peyton Manning's face when the center snapped the ball over his head into the end zone.

Let me remind you one more time - Curling starts in 8 days and pitchers & catchers report in 12 days.

We killed that computer.

I went shooting today with my son and one of his friends. We took our pee shooters but I also brought along a shoulder cannon. Since it was an outdoor range, I also decided that it was the perfect opportunity for some extra fun and I brought an old computer I had in my basement.

Let me tell you, when you hit a computer with a high-powered rifle, some interesting things happen.

We put at least 20 rounds into that thing. The entrance holes where nice little 1/4 inch circles but the exit holes were large jagged inch and a half tears. At one point, there was a lot of white smoke coming out of a computer that hasn't been plugged in for at least 10 years.

We also set out some plastic milk jugs filled with water. When you hit a gallon of water with a high-powered slug, you get a nice explosion of water and plastic.

So now you know how I spent my day. It was spent with my son, a bunch of guns and a lot of fun.
