They won last night

Tonight is looking pretty good as well with the Red Sox up 2-0 in the third inning. Unfortunately, the Blue Jackets are up 1-0 over the Bruins at the end of the first period.

Instead of finding links, I'm going to pay attention to these games.

I'll get some links tomorrow.

They need to win tonight

This sub-.500 baseball things has gone on long enough. They need to start hitting the damned baseball and scoring runs. They need to step on home plate more than the other team. Their problem is not about starting pitching, it's about a failure to move runners along the base paths.

As for the Bruins, their next game is tomorrow (4/30) and they need to win as well. They do not want to fall behind in this series because the Blue Jackets are playing like they mean it.

They lost again

The Red Sox lost again today. That makes two in a row they lost.

They are not in last place but they are only one game up on the Orioles. If the Orioles win this evening, they Red Sox will only be a half game out of last place.

I do not like it when the Red Sox are in last place.

The Bruins lost to the Blue Jackets last night and their series is now tied one game each.

I managed to watch the first two periods and when I fell asleep, the game was tied 2-2. I was hoping the Bruins would score in the third but it didn't work out that way and they ended up losing in overtime.

Not a good weekend for sports.

My youngest celebrated his birthday today. Actually, I suspect he celebrated it last night because at one point today, he told me his girlfriend was taking him to pick up his car. Apparently she drove him home last night.

He is a smart man.

Well, my lawn is mowed, the steaks are ready to be cooked and the dog is fed. After I finish cooking and we finish eating, I'm going to settle in and watch bad television.

LinkedIn is run by inept dweebs

Years ago, when it first started up, I created a LinkedIn account because it was geared towards business and in my world, the more contacts you have, the more job opportunities you have. Over the years, I have accumulated hundreds of contacts, some of whom I have no idea who they are. They are more than likely sales types that have asked me to connect with them in the hopes they might sell me something.

But that's not what this is about. It's about the "social media" aspect of LinkedIn.

LinkedIn periodically sends me emails that say things like, "You have 25 new messages!" and those messages are really just notifications from LinkedIn about something my contacts have recently done or accomplished.

One of the common "accomplishments" is a work anniversary. The message will say something like, "Congratulate Lurlene for 3 years at Bucky's Bar and Fireworks Emporium".

Well, I got this beauty the other day:

Does LinkedIn seriously think I want to send her a message saying, "Hey! Congratulations on being disabled for 16 years! That's quite an accomplishment. You must be so proud."

Idiots.

Last nights Red Sox game got rained out.

Todays 4:00 game started on time and as I type this, it's the bottom of the fourth inning and the Rays are up 1-0. The Red Sox are playing okay and if the bats come to life, they just might win this one.

As for the Bruins, they'll be playing tonight at 8:00 which means I get watch that game without having to do that whole channel flipping thing.

Good night of sports

Last night, the Red Sox won 7-3, splitting the series with the Tigers.

It was a great game to watch because they played a lot like the Red Sox from last season. Porcello pitched like an ace and the batters swung their bats well, driving the ball all over the place.

Tonight they are starting a three game series against the Rays but the weather may not cooperate. There is a line of storms that may roll through Boston around 8:30. That will probably bring the game to an abrupt end before they finish up 5 innings.

As for the Bruins, they came damn close to blowing last nights game when they ended up in a tie at the end of the three periods. Fortunately, the Bruins score at 5:15 into the sudden death overtime period, winning the game 3-2.

They are off tonight and the next game will be on Saturday. I will, of course, watch that game.

Hey! They won!

Now if the Red Sox can win tonights game, they'll split the series with the Tigers and move on to a three game series with the Rays.

On top of that, the Bruins start their best of seven series against the Blue Jackets tonight.

That means I'll be doing the PiP thing and flipping back & forth between NESN & NBCSN like the sports junkie that I am.

Well, I'm not really a sports junkie, I like baseball.

I also like hockey when the Bruins are in the Stanley Cup mix.

Well, at least the Bruins won.

The Red Sox just couldn't beat the Tigers. They lost both games of the double-header yesterday.

Fortunately, the Bruins won their deciding game against the Toronto Maple Leafs last night and move on in the Stanley Cup semi-finals. Since the Tampa Bay Lightning, the number one seed was eliminated early in the series, the Bruins are now the number one seed and that means they will have home ice advantage during the remainder of the series.

As for the Red Sox, I have a feeling this is going to be a long season. They just aren't playing like they should. I'm still hoping they get their shit together soon and start winning games but they are now 24 games into the season and they have a 9-15 record.

That's not a good record.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to watch the Red Sox games. It's what I do.

Another busy day

Yesterday afternoon, my youngest son drove down from Keene NH and together, we drove out to Framingham to hook up with my eldest. The plan was for the three of us to head into Boston where we would attend a Red Sox game at 7:00 using the tickets I had won this winter.

Unfortunately, the weather had different plans and the game was postponed to today at 1:00. We did, however, enjoy a nice dinner and a lengthy conversation about things in general.

Neither one of my boys could take today off and I had already made arrangements to go flying at 1:00 this afternoon so our plans for seeing the Red Sox fell through completely.

Turns out they lost anyways.

It was a fantastic day to fly.

I didn't go anywhere, I just did take-offs and landings in the pattern. The wind was a 3 or 4 knot direct crosswind so I got to practice my crosswind landings without getting my ass kicked. There was a little bumpiness from the sun heating the roads and causing thermals but nothing uncomfortable.

I managed to get in 10 landings - 5 full stop landings and 5 touch & go's. Some of them were smooth as glass, others were a little harsh but all of them were successful.

I love flying. It's the coolest thing you can do in direct defiance of gravity.

Oh, and before I forget, the Northampton Airport is on the Connecticut River and I can tell you that the river is definitely at flood stage. Flying around and looking down reveals there are a lot of new "ponds" where the river overran its banks or water simply just pooled from all the rain.

On the upside, my lawn looks freakin' great!

Busy day today

I took a day off from work so I could gather up my two male offspring and go do bonding things with them. I would have bonded with my female offspring as well but she's in Iowa and it takes two days to drive there.

What all this means is that you don't get much of an update today.

I'll try to make up for it tomorrow.

Merry Easter everybody.

Our youngest and his girlfriend spent a few hours with us enjoying the traditional Easter Lasagna. We chatted with our two older ones via our wireless communication devices and I'm pleased to say that all is well with them.

After dinner, my wife and the kids went over to visit with her mom. I ate too much and stayed home and watched baseball.

Four+ hour baseball game this afternoon.

The Red Sox were up 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Tommy Pham of the Rays hit a home run off Matt Barnes, tying the game 3-3.

Barnes finished the eighth without giving up anther hit and in the ninth, the Red Sox brought in a kid named Walden that they just called up from Pawtucket on Friday. Walden pitched pretty damned well and the third baseman, Devers, managed to make the play of the day when he snagged a one-hop line drive, spun and made a bullet throw to first for the final out of the ninth.

In the tenth, the Red Sox had runners on first and second with two outs and they just couldn't get anyone to step on home plate.

Walden came back out to pitch in the tenth and made pretty quick work of the Rays.

In the eleventh, the Red Sox came up to bat and they played perfect extra innings baseball:
  • Devers hit a single. Runner at first. No outs.
  • Chavis, the new kid, walked. Runners at 1st and 2nd. No outs.
  • Bradley laid a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Runners at 2nd and 3rd. One out.
  • Vazquez hit a sacrifice fly. Devers scores. Runner at 3rd. Two out.
  • Benintendi hit a roller to 2nd. Three outs.
Then the Rays came up to face Brasier with the score 4-3 in favor of the Red Sox.

  • Gracia struck out. One out.
  • Wendle hit a fly ball to center. Two outs.
  • Lowe hit a line drive to first. Three outs and game over.

With that win, the Red Sox swept the first place Rays and they return home with a three game winning streak.

Tomorrow they start a four game series against the Tigers.

So far, so good

It's the bottom of the fourth inning and the Red Sox are up 5-1. Porcello is pitching pretty well so maybe he's figured it out.

I had to change a headlamp on my wife's XC-70 and man, that is a pain in the ass to do. First thing to do is remove the cover on the two engine control units so you gain an extra inch of room to get to the lightbulb.

Once the module cover is out of the way, you have to remove the weather cover from the headlamp and reach in to find the bulb. Then you have to figure out which way to turn the bulb to remove it (hint: it's counter clock-wise).

Now that the old bulb is out, you unplug it from the wiring and plug the new bulb in. Now come the fun part....

There are three tabs on the base of the bulb that need to be aligned with three slots on the headlamp holder. You need to do this without being able to see it.

The first time I did it, it only took me about 10 minutes to get the bulb aligned and locked into place. I quickly discovered that only two of the tabs had engaged when I turned on the headlights and noticed that it was shining on the ground about five feet in front of the car.

I took it out and set about trying a second time.

The second time took me about 15 minutes to get the bulb lined up and engaged because I was struggling to get all three tabs in place. Seemed like every time I tried to turn the bulb to engage the tabs, it would rack sideways.

It finaly engaged nicely and when I turned the headlights on, I found that it was out of line by a few inches. A little application of tactical force moved the bulb so it lined up nicely.

Then it was time to struggle with getting the control module cover back in place before realizing I had forgotten to put the weather cover back on the headlamp assembly.

Anyways, it only took me about 45 frustrating minutes to do something that should take abut 10 minutes at best.

Pain in the ass....

Well, the Mueller report hit the news stands today

Everyone that calls themselves a Republican is saying that Donald Trump is so innocent he makes Goldilocks look like a mob hit man.

Everyone that calls themselves a Democrat is saying that Donald Trump so guilty he makes both Hitler and Pol Pot look like boy scouts.

Look, the guy is an arrogant, self-centered, loud-mouthed, New York slum lord but he didn't sit down with Vladimir Putin and figure out how to make Hillary Rodham look like Cruella De Vil. She did that all by herself.

The Democrats should stop wasting time on their petty investigations that aren't going to find anything illegal and the Republicans should face the fact that their guy is an unethical sleeze-ball.

The Red Sox continue to suck and they lost both games to the Yankees.

For a brief period, it looked like they might win last nights game. Evaldi was pitching great and he gave them six complete innings. At the end of six, the Red Sox were leading 3-1.

Then, in the seventh inning, Workman loaded the bases and then Brasier gave up a grand slam home run. That put the Yankees in the lead 5-3.

And that was how the game ended.

Being that I am an old guy who has been a Red Sox fan since the 1960s, I'm used to them sucking and I continue to have faith that they will turn it around and start playing good baseball.

Sorry about last night

Then again, if your evening was spent waiting for me to post shit like this, you have a sad life and should give some consideration to spending more time with family and friends.

The saga of my laptop seems to have reached it's conclusion with my machine running nicely. I've loaded all the software and data from my backups so I once again have my electronic flight log, my investment info and all of my contact info.

What I don't have are all of my old email messages and to be honest with you, I don't really miss them.

The Red Sox suck. There is no other way to put it, they flat out suck.

They suck at hitting, they suck at pitching and the suck at fielding.

I'm hoping they stop sucking soon and get back to playing good baseball.

While I watch the Red Sox play what I hope is good baseball, you can visit these:

Guess who forgot to post

I got my laptop back and had to restore it from the backup. I didn't want to do a complete restore because the repair guys identified the problem as some bad firmware. That meant I did a clean install and then went through the backup moving all my data back to the machine.

It's not the ideal way to restore a computer because it takes a few hours but it's better than just dumping everything over and finding out whatever caused the original problem is back.

I did all that while the Red Sox were getting their asses stomped by the Yankees so you can imagine how my evening went last night.

Monday, April 15, 2019

Well, so much for that winning streak

The Red Sox stunk up the place today and got their collective asses handed to them by the Orioles. I believe the final score was 8-1.

On the up side, my cousin Bob managed to finish his second Boston Marathon this morning.

Not bad for an old guy.

One game winning streak

They managed to beat the Orioles 4-0 this afternoon. Price pitched a great game and the batters actually hit the ball.

Hopefully the same holds true tomorrow because right after tomorrow's game, they head down to New York so they can play two games against the Yankees on Tuesday and Wednesday.

So I got kinda busy today and it turns out I forgot to finish this post. Now it's almost 9:00 pm and I got nothing for ya.

Maybe tomorrow will be more conducive to hunting the interwebers for interesting things to link to.

Tough game today

They lost this afternoon, breaking their streak of two wins....

I've come to the conclusion that they are still a great team but for some reason, they are struggling to get their collective shit together. Once they start clicking, and they will start clicking, it will be difficult to beat them.

Until then, we just need to have faith.

Yes, I stayed awake for the entire game last night and I got to see them win in the bottom of the ninth. I'm tired today but it was worth it. They played a hell of a game.

Man's gotta have dreams.

Another day the Red Sox didn't lose!

It was another day off for them but like I said before, any victory is a good victory.

At some point in 2016, the federal government of the United States opened an investigation into whether or not the Trump campaign worked with the Russian government to win the Presidential election.

After almost 2 years, millions of dollars, hundreds of subpoenas and interrogations of hundreds of people, the investigation concluded that the Trump campaign did not work with the Russian government.

Now the Attorney General is looking into what started that investigation. He is curious as to who or what made the accusations and why it was done. He wants to know if there was any abuse of powers on the part of government authorities.

Sure, why not.

Lets piss away another few million dollars, waste another few million man hours and interrogate hundreds of people. What the hell, we got nothing else to worry about.

The southern border is practically under siege, the Social Security endowment is going to run out in the next few years, thousands of people are dying from opioid addiction and the Dreamers are still in legal-limbo but screw all that, let's worry about Trump's tax returns and who started asking questions about Russia.

Our government is a shitshow and it's our own damned fault because we elected these idiots.

And by idiots, I mean all 536 of them. Every single one of the 100 senators, the 435 congressmen and the president.

Idiots...

They had a winning streak of one game

The Red Sox just couldn't win their home opener. As a matter of fact, they kind of sucked.

The one highlight is that they are not the worst team in all of MLB. The Cincinnati Reds have that glory as the worst team in all of the MLB.

I spent some time chatting with a flight instructor today, going over the free online training offered by the FAA.

He reached out to me because he noticed that I've been doing the training but not logging it. He said if I logged it, it counts towards my flight training and saves me the money associated with normal flight hours.

Hell, if I can shave 4 or 5 hours off of my annual flight requirements, that's almost $1,000.

Sign me up for that!

Okay, I'm filled up with pizza and I'm tired.

No baseball tonight

That means the Red Sox did not lose a game today.

Hey, any victory is a good victory.

Not much going on today.

My back and hands hurt from yesterday when I spent several hours digging up that freakin' virginia creeper shit out of the gardens and the woods.

Man, I hate that shit.

I was going to try and schedule some time with my flight instructor this week but the weather isn't looking very cooperative. Thursday looks like the best day of the week but all of the aircraft are currently reserved.

I'm beginning to think buying a plane might not be a bad idea. If I do upgrades to it, I could probably sell it for what I paid for it after a few years.

Then again, you need a lot of money to buy a plane with the operative words there being "a lot".

Oh well.

Well, at least they didn't get swept.

They won today's game 1-0 and now they head home to Boston where they will.....

....probably get rained out for their home opener on Tuesday.

Oh well, that's what happens every year around this time. Games get rained out.

Lots of yard work got done this weekend including the removal of an old tree fort.

My kids and I built a tree fort about 20 years ago and it lasted for several years. But when you bolt 12 foot boards between trees and those trees sway in the breeze, things break down over the years and around 6 or 7 yers ago, it fell apart.

Today I grabbed my trusty old socket set and a length of pipe. I set the 7/8 inch socket onto the 8 inch long bolts, slipped the pipe over the wrench and proceeded to remove all the bolts.

My hands hurt and my back is probably going to be barking at me tomorrow but the damned thing is gone and I can look out my window without seeing that eyesore anymore.

I'm beginning to understand...

...how the Orioles fans felt last season. Watching your team lose almost every game they play gets old quickly.

On the other hand, I know they have the skill and talent. I know they are a better team than this. I know they are going to go on a lengthy winning streak at some point.

I know this because they are good.

My laptop is back in the hands of Apple.

I took it to the Apple store today and the tech that looked at it pretty much said, "Well, they screwed this up. We're gonna have to install a new logic board."

Basically, I'm going to have a brand new computer when they return it to me.

The hard drive in a Macbook is not removable, it is an integral part of the logic board. That means when they install the new board, they install a brand new hard drive.

Thanks goodness I do backups and I have one from this morning. Hopefully things work as planned and when I get my laptop back, all I have to do is select the "Restore from Backup" option and plug in the backup drive.

At least, that's plan A.

Plan B is to just start all over again with a blank hard drive.

I'm really hoping for plan A.

Well, they won last night

But this afternoon sucked.

As I type this, the game just ended with the Athletics winning 7-3

The curse of the Red Sox is that they leave men on base.

And I don't mean a guy on first. No, when they leave guys on base, they do it with the bases loaded or runners on second and third. They get right to the very edge of scoring runs and then they call it quits.

On top of that, the Red Sox have never done great on left coast trips. The bright side of this depressing beginning to the season is that they are getting this trip out of the way early.

Tomorrow they start a three game series against the Diamondbacks. Playing in a national league park is always fun because I get to watch the pitchers bat.

Last place it is.

With their 1-5 record, the Red Sox are tied for last place with the Angels.

Not a good start.

Got my laptop back today.

Seems that MacBook keyboards are defective and mine decided to start showing off its defects. So last Saturday I took it up to the Apple store and dropped it off so they could give it a shiny new non-defective keyboard.

Fortunately, I have three other computers I can use to feed my internet habits so the four day loss of my Mac didn't kill me. What did kill me was that during that time I used the Spectrum online email reader to read my emails.

Holy crap, what a piece of shit that product is. I feel bad for anyone using that particular monstrosity to get their emails.

Thank God I got my email reader back.

They are on the fast track to last place

I know it's early in the season and there is no reason to panic but right now, I'm genuinely concerned that the starting pitching staff may be a hot steamy pile of shit.

I did manage to watch the first two innings last night and it looked like Price was doing okay. Then I went to bed and fell asleep. When I woke up this morning, I found out that I was wrong.

They are digging a hole that they are going to have to climb out of at some point.

I don't know why I insist on doing this to myself but I need to go buy some grass seed.

The raking of the front yard revealed all the dead spots from the drought of two years ago and it's time to fix them. Unfortunately, I don't suspect that my grass-growing ability has improved since the last time I tried this but what the hell, I'm going to try again.

What's that old saying about crazy people?

Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results is a sign of insanity.

New series starts tonight

The Red Sox are in California to start a four game series against the Athletics and my hopes are they take all four games. The Athletics are one of those teams that you never know what's going to happen with them. They are "The Money Ball" team run by Billy Bean and that guy is a wizard when it comes to picking players.

Price is pitching tonight and I'm really hoping he does better than the first four starters. The Red Sox need some wins.
