Looks like we'll be repairing instead of replacing.

Today we stopped at several appliance stores and we have come to the conclusion that we are better off repairing our current fridge by replacing the compressor. We tried to find one that had the options we currently have and it turns out none of the current models have them. And all the new bells and whistles don't appeal to us.

That means we will be calling the repair guy to start the ball rolling. It'll be a week before one of us is available to be home for the repair so until it's fixed, I'm guessing we'll be dining out a lot or rummaging through the downstairs freezer looking for microwavable meals.

Fortunately, I like chicken pot pies....

The Red Sox played at 1:00 this afternoon and they managed to clinch the ALEast when they beat the Astros 6-3.

This means their last game is at 3:00 tomorrow against the Astros and then they are off until Thursday when they will.....

....play the Astros in game one of the ALDS.

Thanks goodness they have a few days off because they look pretty worn down and the injuries need time to heal.

I'm going to find some decent take-out for dinner (we're thinking gyros) and then watch some DVRs.

While I do that, you should try these out:

Long day

I left work at my normal time and headed over to the Tap Room to meet up with John. We didn't drink any adult beverages but we did spend an hour or so catching up.

I made it home in time to turn on the Red Sox and make some pizza for dinner.

We are going to be eating weird dinners for the next week because our refrigerator decided to stop performing the one task it is designed to perform and we no longer have the ability to keep our leftovers cold and salmonella-free.

It's a great fridge and it has all the bells & whistles we like so we are leaning towards getting it repaired. We're going to shop around tomorrow to look at what's out there but I suspect we won't find anything we really like. So on Monday we'll call the repair guy back, tell him to order the parts and come out & fix our normally reliable refrigerator.

The Red Sox managed to lose last night and tonight isn't looking a lot better.

Hopefully they get their act together, start hitting the ball and manage to step on home plate more times than the Astros.

If they win tonight, they clinch the ALEast.

Here are a few links that you might find interesting:

They still need to win

As of this afternoon, the Red Sox still have a three game lead over the Yankees and there are only four games left to play. That means their magic number is 2.

If the Red Sox win tonight and the Yankees lose tonight, the Red Sox will clinch the ALEast.

Keep your fingers crossed.

They better get their act together

I realize that they've had some injuries but if they don't start winning ball games, they're gonna end up as the wild card team. That means an extra round of playoff games and no days off.

They are pretty beat up right now and they could really use the time off to recover a bit.

I managed to find a few links for you:

Lets hope that it's only one loss.

The Red Sox managed to lose yesterday after the Yankees had won. This means they are now once again 4 games in the lead and their magic number remains at 3.

Hopefully they win tonights game and the Yankees lose theirs.

That would be good.

Not much else for me to chat about so let's just get to the links:

Monday, September 25, 2017

Dammit.... The Yankees won this afternoon.

I was hoping the Royals would beat them.

This means the Red Sox need to win tonights game to lower that magic number.

Kind of a quiet day today so not much to say.

I did manage to find some links for you:

Good day to be a New England sports fan.

Once again, it was one of those picture-in-a-picture kind of days with both the Red Sox and the Patriots playing at 1:00. You would think that someone would have planned the schedules a little better...

The Red Sox managed to sweep the Reds with a final win in their three game series today while the Yankees managed to lose to the Blue Jays. This means the Red Sox are now five games ahead of the Yankees and their magic number for winning the ALEast is down to three.

That's right folks, all that needs to happen is for the Yankees to lose three of their remaining seven games or the Red Sox to win three of their remaining games.

Odds are pretty good that some combination of wins/losses will occur that give the Red Sox the ALEast.

The Red Sox are on their way back to Boston where they will play three games against the Blue Jays and then four games against the Astros.

As for the Patriots, I'm not entirely sure how they managed to beat the Texans but they did.

Brady was sacked three or four times during the game but he managed to once again pull off a miracle and come from behind to win the game in the last few minutes.

So now I'm going to watch some DVRs or maybe Americas Funniest Home Videos or whatever it is that requires no thinking and makes me laugh.

While I do that, you can click on these:

They are four games ahead

Both the Red Sox and the Yankees played today at 4:00 and they both won their games. This means the Red Sox maintain the four game lead they got yesterday when they won and the Yankees lost

There are eight games left in the season and their magic number is five. If the Red Sox can win two or three of those eight games and the Yankees lose two or three of them, the Red Sox will take the division.

Both teams will play at 1:00 tomorrow. I'm hoping for a Red Sox win and a Yankee loss.

I might regret putting my AC units away.

According to the talking heads on our local news station, we are probably going to see 90+ degrees by Sunday and it's probably going to be humid.

I hate hot and humid.

A friend of mine who dealt with breast cancer 4 or 5 years ago has just been told she had a recurrence and will have to undergo radiation or chemo. If that doesn't work, she's looking at a full mastectomy.

I like Siri. We are kindred spirits in the art of vulgarity.

The Red Sox start a three game series against the Reds tonight so I get to watch them play with no designated hitter. That means the pitchers will get to bat and that's always fun to watch.

They will be playing in October

The Red Sox magic number is 8 to clinch the ALEast but as of last night, they are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. If they lose the division to the Yankees they will still be one of the wild card teams.

The Red Sox and the Yankees are are both on a travel day today so there will be no change in the standings and there will be no baseball for me to watch.

While I watch some of my DVRs, you can visit these links:

The magic number is nine.

Yes, I watched all 11 innings last night because the game actually went pretty quickly. The Red Sox managed to win 1-0 on a wild pitch. Not the prettiest way to win but hey, a win is a win.

The Yankees also won so the Red Sox still have a three game lead but their magic number dropped to nine.

We'll see what happens tonight. The Yankees have already won their game today so the Red Sox need to win tonight to keep that three game lead.

I still haven't received an email from Equifax about my credit monitoring.

Hello Jose

What is left of hurricane Jose is spinning off the coast of New Jersey and it's going to make this week kind of grey and breezy. Right behind Jose is Maria and she'll also bring us some winds and rains.

This means I probably won't be doing a lot of flying over the next week or two.

Toys backwardsR Us has filed for bankruptcy.

Now where will parents take their kids to buy all those cheap-ass, lead-paint covered plastic Chinese toys?

There are 12 games left in the regular baseball season and the Yankees are 3 games behind the Red Sox in the ALEast

That means that any combination of 10 Red Sox wins or Yankees losses will result in the Red Sox winning the division. This is known as "The Magic Number"

Any combination of 9 Red Sox wins or Yankees losses will result in a tie and a one game playoff for the division. This happened once before back in 2005.

And finally, any combination less than 9 means the Yankees win the division and the Red Sox will be a wild card team.

I'm hoping for the Red Sox winning the division.

I like picture-in-a-picture

The Red Sox played the Rays at 1:00 this afternoon and the Patriots played the Saints at 1:00 this afternoon.

Thanks to whoever it is that invented picture-in-a-picture, I was able to pay attention to both events although I have to admit that I might have paid a little more attention to the football than I did to the baseball.

As for what happened,  well, it was a good day to be a Patriots fan and a so-so day to be a Red Sox fan.

The Patriots beat the Saints 36-20, bringing their record to 1-1 and proving the Tom Brady can still play football with the best of them. Unfortunately Gronkowski left the game with an injury. It didn't appear to be too bad so hopefully he's back on the field for next Sundays game against the Texans.

In baseball, the Orioles beat the Yankees so the Red Sox had a chance to increase their lead in the ALEast but it wasn't to be. The Rays like to be the spoiler and today they were when they beat the Red Sox 3-2.

The Red Sox remain 3 games ahead of the Yankees but those 3 games represent a very slim lead that could evaporate during the remaining two weeks of the season.

I'm gonna cook dinner and eat it while we watch a movie. Then I'm probably going to fall asleep.

No, I did not watch 15 innings of baseball last night.

As a matter of fact, I only watched 8 innings before I fell asleep. Turns out the Red Sox were able to beat the Rays and maintain their 3 game lead over the Yankees in the ALEast.

The Indians lost last night but they had a record-setting 22 game winning streak. That's pretty damned impressive and I suspect that last nights loss might just be an anomaly. I won't be surprised if they win the rest of their games and go home with the trophy.

Don't get me wrong, I would like the Red Sox to win the World Series and I'm rooting for them all the way but I won't be surprised if it's the Indians that take it all.

The spam has been pretty weak lately. I think they're starting to fell neglected because I always delete whatever they post. Last nights offerings were kinda lame but a couple of them caught my eye.

There was this one:
Glad to be one of many visitors on this awing web site :D.
It was the little sideways smiley face thing that stood out but the word awing is what attracted me. I'm going to start using that word because I think it's awing.

And then there was this guy who tried to slip his website in using some kind of spammer subliminal messaging:
Excellent article. Keep posting such kind of info on your blog.
Im really impressed by your blog.[X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X]Hello there, You have performed a fantastic job.
I will certainly digg it and personally suggest to my friends.
The website with the dashes between each letter was an interesting twist. I removed the URL and replaced the letters in the name with X's.

I am, however, glad he will digg it.

Todays game is on at 6:00 so I'll probably be able to watch all nine innings. I make no promises if they go beyond that.

While I have an awing evening that I will most certainly digg, you can digg these awing links:

And the saga continues.

Our esteemed senators are pushing legislation to "hold Equifax accountable!"

As always is the case with our legislators, they are late to the party. The information is out there and holding someone accountable is nice but that doesn't really help me.

All that's going to happen is three or four executives will be fired and given millions of dollars in severance. The rest of us will be left trying to stop someone from stealing thousands of dollars from us.

I'll ask the question I always ask our legislators: "What are you doing for me? How does this help me?"

The Red Sox were fined for using electronics (Apple watch) to spy on opponents.

Well, they won this afternoon

That means they remain three and a half games ahead of the Yankees. The Yankees are playing the Orioles tonight and I have no idea how that game is going to go.

The Yankees are playing pretty well but the Orioles like to be spoilers. They like to make it hard for teams to ride into the playoffs.

They will be rerunning this afternoons game at 8:00 tonight so I be able to at least watch a few innings.

Back to three and a half games

With the Red Sox win last night and the Yankees loss last night, the Red Sox were once again 4 games ahead of the Yankees in the ALEast. Then the Yankees played a day game today and won which meant the Red Sox are now only three and a half games in the lead.

Hopefully the Red Sox win again tonight because the end of the season is fast approaching and they need to maintain as big a lead as possible.

Only 3 games

The Red Sox are only 3 games ahead of the Yankees in the ALEast and falling further behind the Indians in the AL. As a matter of fact, everyone is falling further behind the Indians because it appears that the Indians forgot how to lose.

Terry Francona and his Indians are now in first place in the American League and they are in no hurry to give that up.

So tonight the Red Sox are hosting the Athletics, a team that has been eliminated from any post season play.

I'm hoping the Athletics don't suddenly remember how to play baseball because it would be nice to see the Red Sox sweep all three games of their series.

Gas prices went up fast but will go down slowly

At some point in the last few weeks, the refineries down in Houston started to come back on-line, producing gasoline. But the prices continue to go up. That's because the suppliers and the transportation companies (pipelines) are screwing us.

It's what they do.

The Red Sox are off tonight so I get to catch up on my DVRs.

I think I'll see how the Pickers are doing.

Not a good day for flying.

I called the airport this morning and was able to reserve a plane for noon. I checked the weather reports and everything looked great. Westover had the winds at between 6 and 8 knots out of the north. Like a little kid running downstairs to open Christmas presents, I gathered up my stuff and packed it into my flight bag.

I have some new stuff that I have been looking forward to trying out. I built a ADS-B receiver that I've only been able to test on the ground where it can't receive the tower broadcasts from the FAA. I wanted to see if it did it's thing and picked up the weather as well as the other aircraft in the area.

I arrived at the airport at 11:45 and quickly discovered that Westover is full of crap.

The wind was about 13 knots with gusts to 18 and it was variable, swinging between west & north. This meant I had to deal with a changing cross-wind to head-wind on takeoff and landing.

I executed a decent takeoff but it was a bumpy ride from the surface up to 3,500. When it's bumpy at 3,500 that means there is wind shear and turbulence. Neither one of those things is fun to fly in so I decided to return to the airport.

I aborted my first landing when two other aircraft set up at the end of the runway to take off. I felt that having them on my left with a right-side cross wind was an invitation to either looking like a moron or crashing into one of them so I told them I was going to go around the pattern while they departed.

Once they had departed, I brought the plane in for a landing and breathed a sigh of relief because it was a struggle with the wind. I won't tell you it was a great landing because I bounced it once but given the ever-changing wind, I'm not unhappy with it.

All-in-all I was only in the air for a half hour and I only got one landing in but that was more than enough for a day like today.

Oh, and in case you wanted to know, my homemade ADS-B receiver worked like a champ. Not only did I see all of the aircraft in the sky around me, I also saw the weather and all pilot reports about turbulence.

I will say that it's not the kind of thing I'll be using when I'm just flying around the upper valley but when I decide to make a trip some where, I'll use it in conjunction with ATC and that will give me a nice view of what's happening around me.

The Red Sox are still in first place in the ALEast which is a good thing. They lost today so they are now 4 games ahead of the Yankees.

Unfortunately, the Indians have been on one of those, "Holy crap! No one can beat them!" streaks and are now tied for first place in the AL with the Astros.

You can pretty much bet that the Red Sox will not have home field advantage for the playoffs but that's okay. I'll be happy if they make the playoffs.

There's a reason I never went into the exciting field of manual labor.

As I type this, my back is kicking my ass because my wife and I decided to buy two new couches and a new chair for our family room. That meant my wife and I spent the afternoon moving four couches and two chairs - the old ones got moved into the basement and the new ones got moved into the family room.

To quote Sergeant Hulka, "I'm getting too old for this shit."

Still in first place

The Red Sox are still in first place but they are only three and a half games ahead of the Yankees. They are off tonight but that's okay because tonight is the opening day for NFL Football.

The Patriots are hosting the Chiefs out in Foxboro at 8:30 and I will be watching that game instead of baseball.

No, I did not watch 19 innings of baseball last night

As a matter of fact, I only watched 9 innings. I was starting to no off during the 8th inning and forced myself to stay awake to see the 9th. Once they tied it, I realized this was going into extra innings and there was no way I was going to stay awake ay longer.

I was a little more than amazed when I found out it lasted until 1:20 in the morning.

That's a long baseball game.

As for the whole stealing signs using an apple watch thing, I'm thinking the Yankees are just pissed because they didn't think of it first.

Trump just forced congress to get off its ass

For the last 20 years, President Clinton, President Bush and President Obama have talked about immigration and the problems we face as a nation because of our porous borders

Despite three presidents pushing for some kind of laws, congress has done nothing.  And by nothing, I mean they have literally passed no legislation whatsoever that makes it easy for good people to become citizens and bad people to stay away.

This incredible lack of anything forced President Obama to go around them and issue an executive order. This effectively made congress meaningless, which is something a lot of us have known for a long time.

Well, President Trump has just handed congress a major problem.

He just told them they have 6 months to get their collective asses in gear and do the right thing. Either make DACA a law or admit to your constituents that you don't want to do anything accept talk about how bad things are.

Congress is the problem, not the President.

The Red Sox are in trouble.

Not only are they falling apart on the field, they are also stealing signs from opposing teams using an Apple iWatch.

According to the commissioner of baseball, there is no rule against stealing signs but there are rules about using electronic devices. Everyone steals signs. That's why pitchers and catchers have multiple sets of signs and they switch them during the game.

Where the Red Sox failed is they used electronics.

Idiots.

I'm going to watch them play baseball.

If they are losing, I'm going to yell at them while they play baseball.

I have rounded up to the max

We have a major infestation of a vine known as the Virginia Creeper. If you are unfamiliar with the the creeper, take drive on almost any of the highways around here and you'll see it draped off the trees. It's a weed that grows on everything, kills it and then it destroys it's victims corpse.

I found a little something called RoundUp 365Max that had written warnings all over it that basically said, "This is death. It will kill everything it touches. Don't spray it on anything you want to keep alive. Seriously. we're not kidding. This is worse than Agent Orange."

So I wandered through the woods along our fence line spraying everything that grew near the fence.

And not near the fence.

And far away from the fence.

Hell, I'm pretty sure one or two pine trees are going to die soon but I don't care. I want that creeper gone and, if this stuff works as avertised, I'll pay someone to cut down the dead trees.

The Red Sox are on the fast track to blowing the season and starting their vacation early.

They lost three of four to the Yankees and are now only three and a half games in the lead. If the Yankees continue to win and the Red Sox don't get their shit together, their season will end on October 1st.

Busy day today

We were gone most of the day so I didn't have any time to search the webernet for entertaining or enlightening links. I'll try to find extra ones tomorrow.

Today was the Keene Music Festival and our youngest performed.

He and his bandmates did a good job and we enjoyed ourselves although I'm not entirely sure I didn't eat too much. I probably shouldn't have had the large soft serve...

So anyways, we had a good day. I hope you had a good day too.

Friday, September 1, 2017

Well that sucked.

The Yankees managed to stomp the Red Sox last night and they are now separated by four and a half games.

Also, it appears that the Tigers have given up for the season and they traded away their ace pitcher. This means the Indians beat them this afternoon and will probably beat them again tonight. That means the Indians are opening up their lead over the Red Sox in the AL and will probably have home field advantage in the playoffs.

The Red Sox need to move the line.

I'm going to watch some baseball and then fall asleep.
