There is a large tent in my backyard

Maybe the Ringling Brothers Circus is at my house which is really going to piss me off - who the hell is going to clean up all the elephant poop?

Actually, the tent is in place to provide cover for the upcoming graduation party. I suspect there will be several dozens of young people roaming around my yard and eating my food on the day of the party and if it rains, we would like them to have someplace to congregate other than my living room.

Of course, they'll probably congregate in my living room anyways so I'm not sure, exactly, why we have a tent....

It's been a great day.

For the first time this season, the Red Sox are above .500! They're still in last place in the AL East but at least they are winning more games than they are losing.

Let's hope they keep on winning because it doesn't look like anyone else is losing.

What a lovely day....

Thankfully, my wife turned the AC on this afternoon so I did not go home to a house that was the same temperature as the sun.

*

The Red Sox are playing tonight but unfortunately, they are up against one of the best pitchers in the American league. Justin Verlander is one of those guys that starts out throwing the ball over the plate at 94 mph and after the eighth inning, he's throwing it over the plate at 97 mph.

How the hell does anyone hit a baseball thrown by that guy....

It's called Memorial Day for a reason.

I hope you had a good Memorial Day today and you took a minute to think about those folks who never made it home.

*

Damn, it was hot today. Thank you Mr. Carrier.

*

Attention family members:
Today was the scan but due to the holiday, there will be no results until tomorrow or Wednesday. Once we hear, you will receive an email.
*

The Red Sox won this afternoon which puts them back at .500. If they can win tomorrow, they will have crossed .500 for the first time this season. That would make me happy.

My phone is dying a slow painful death.

My youngest and I have the oldest smartphones and they are both starting to die.

My youngest son is having cellular issues, which is another way of saying he is dropping phone calls or having problems connecting to the network.

Mine is having operating system problems which is another way of saying the hardware is starting to fail and the operating system is crapping out.

I guess that means we need to replace our phones. In order to keep the costs to a minimum, we'll replace one phone at a time. Since I'm the dad, I'll replace his phone first. I don't like the idea of him not being able to make a phone call.

My legs and back hurt

I spent the day replacing the rug on my porch. That involves about four hours of squat thrusts. It also involves some pretty nasty rug burns.

My legs feel like crap, my knees are red from rug burns and my back would really like to be left alone for a while.

I may be hurting but damn, it looks good.

*

So anyways, I'm sore, tired and sweaty. Fortunately, I also managed to find time to install my air conditioners so right now, as I watch the Red Sox game, I'm sitting in a nice cool, dry 72° room.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Willis Carrier is my hero.

The DJIA is down.

The DJIA is right around 12,400 points. At the beginning of May, it was around 13,400. That's a drop of 1,000 points this month. Fortunately for me, most of my retirement money is stashed in a fixed interest account, away from the equities.

At some point in the near future, the market is probably going to take a big ol' dump and drop below 11,000 points. When that happens, I'll take all the money I have in the fixed account and pour it into equities.

Then, I'll become a billionaire like that Suckerburger kid.

Or I'll become a hundredaire like everyone else.

New Ol' Bess: 5 - Chipmonks: 0

Things I have learned about children: Babies, teenagers, adults, it doesn't matter, they are always your kids and they will always be your kids.

All three of our children are currently living in our house. This means that there are people going in and out of our house at all hours of the day and night. It seems to me that they have no sense of time and actually seem to thrive in the dark cold hours just before dawn. They also seem to have an aversion to light because all three of them have been known to sleep until well after noon.

They may be my kids but they are also vampires...

*

The Red Sox are on day eighteen of a twenty day stretch of games. They have two more games against the Orioles and then they finally get a day off.

I hope their day off doesn't screw up their current winning streak. They have won ten of the eighteen games and that is a pretty damned good streak. If they keep playing the way they are playing, they'll end up in first place in the AL East sometime in late June / early July.

Hell, right now they are in a three-way tie for seventh place in the American League. Considering that they were in thirteenth place only 10 days ago, that's pretty impressive.

Then again, I've been told that I'm easily impressed.

I didn't water today so I hope it rains.

The first most boring thing on the planet is watching grass grow. The second most boring thing on the planet is meeting with your financial adviser. Man, those guys are boring.

After 5 minutes of listening to him talk, I want to jump up, grab him by the collar and shout, "Look, I don't care what is going on in Greece and Spain! I just want you to make sure I don't go broke and end up living like a Chinese peasant! Understand?"

I have a welt on my arm from a mosquito bite that is about the size of a quarter. That must have been one big-a$$ mosquito to leave a welt that big.

One more day of watering.

If I ever hit the lottery, the first thing I'm going to do is get really drunk. The second thing I'm going to do is have a sprinkler system installed.

I'm getting sick and tired of dragging sprinklers all over my lawn, trying to keep it wet enough to grow grass.

Aside from moving my generator into the garage yesterday, I moved my gas grill onto the patio and today I spent the day cleaning the grill, making it ready for this evenings steak dinner.

I like steak dinners. I also understand there might be asparagus which is another thing I like.

What can we expect this year?

I store my generator in my garage but when I need it, I run it on my back porch.

I run it on the porch because the porch is wide open on three sides and it's large enough that I can keep the generator away from my house. That way, there is no problem with carbon monoxide build up and the roof keeps the weather off the generator.

Last fall, when we closed our porch up and covered the furniture, I decided to move the generator out of the garage and leave it on the porch for the winter. That way, if I needed it, I wouldn't have to drag it through the snow to set it up.

Today, I figured it was time to move the generator back into the garage. Before I did that, I checked the oil, cleaned the air filter, started it up and let it run for a bit.

As it was running, I thought back to why I own a generator and said, "I really hope I never go through that again."

*

The summer of 2011 turned out to be the worst summer I have ever experienced when one of our children was diagnosed with a devastating disease.

As if that wasn't bad enough, a few days after the diagnosis, my little town got to enjoy the thrill of having a tornado rip through the middle of it.

After going three days without power, I decided that since I couldn't cure my child's disease, I could at least make him a little more comfortable so I went and bought a generator.

One month later, as the disease was being beaten back by the saints over at Baystate Medical Center, my little town got to enjoy the thrill of having something they called a microburst tear through it.

I'm not sure what a microburst is but I can tell you it does the same kind of damage that a tornado does and, once again, we were without National Grid-supplied electricity for 2 or 3 days. My little generator sure came in handy then.

Flash forward to late October and it appears that my heroes over at Baystate may have beaten the disease. Mother Nature, however, just can't leave us alone and she dumps up to 12 inches of heavy wet snow on trees that still have most of their leaves. The trees all fall down and they take all of the power lines with them.

Once again, we are without power but this time it was for 11 days. Thank God for that little generator running on my porch because that generator supplied us with the electricity to run our furnace, light our rooms and run our television. We had heat, hot water, lights and television. We had hot meals, coffee and news. In other words, we didn't have to eat cold mush, we didn't smell bad and we knew what was going on in the world around us.

So today, as I was putting the generator into it's little cubbyhole underneath my workbench, I had to wonder what Mother Nature has in store for us this coming summer. Maybe another tornado, maybe another microburst, maybe a hurricane. Hell, maybe she'll leave us alone and we'll have a nice pleasant summer with temperatures in the 70s and blue skies.

To be honest with you, I don't care what Mother Nature does. She can do anything she wants to me as long as that f***ing disease never comes back to my child.

Broke another one.

I broke another toe last night. My daughter says that I should start wearing shoes.

*

The Red Sox are still in last place in the AL East but they are slowly making their way up the ladder. As of today, they are tied with the Tigers in eighth place in the American League. That puts them ahead of the White Sox, the Angels, the Royals, the Mariners and the Twins.

Tonight starts an interesting three game series in Philadelphia against the Phillies.

I always like to watch interleague games because you get to see the pitcher bat. When American League pitchers bat, it's funny to watch. They all look like little kids at the plate.

Tonight it will be Daniel Bard who will step up to bat.

Good luck there, Daniel! When you step up to the plate and look at Cole "I hit him in the spine with a 95mph fastball to welcome him to the big leagues" Hamels, remember, spin away from the incoming fast ball, not towards it.

Stil in ninth place

Bucholz needs to put on a few pounds and Becket needs to lose a few pounds. Maybe they should work out together - Bucholz can sit on his ass eating chicken and Becket can run on the treadmill.

*

I checked this afternoon and the Red Sox are still in ninth place. They are a game behind the Tigers and a game & a half behind the Athletics. They are 2 games below .500 and they are playing the Rays tonight.

Up until this season, the Rays have consistently beat the crap out of the Red Sox. Now that the Rays are having one of the best seasons in team history and the Red Sox are playing like crap, the Red Sox managed to take 3 out of 4 games when they played in April.

That means that maybe, just maybe, they will come out of this two game series against the rays at .500 and in eighth place.

At some point, they have to overcome whatever it is that is ailing them and go on an extended winning streak. And I don't mean win 10 in a row.

I mean a winning streak where they win 5, lose 1, win 4, lose 1, win 5, etc...

That's the kind of streak that a league-leading ball team needs.

Off-Site meetings are good.

I used to hate going to meetings at a location outside of my normal work facility but I've found over the years that we certainly get a lot accomplished when we don't have the distraction of our normal workload.

Unfortunately, we are all now a full day behind on our regular "business as usual" stuff when we go in tomorrow....

*

Guess who is now in tenth place in the American League? That's right! The Red Sox are now in tenth place, just behind the White Sox.

And since the White Sox are losing (as I type this, it's10-6 Tigers in the 8th inning) to the Tigers, the Red Sox will probably jump into sole possession of ninth place if they win todays game.

I look forward to being proven completely wrong on the Red Sox this season should they end up in first place. Hell, I'll be overjoyed if they end up in second place.

The House is Full. I repeat - The House is Full

With the arrival home of our eldest, we now have a full house.

He's home with us for 6 or 7 weeks while he enjoys the first of his six internships. That means we will no longer have any food in our house.

I can't help but notice that when all three of them are home, food doesn't seem to last long around here.

The Red Sox are no longer in thirteenth place in the American League. After yesterdays and todays win, they tied the Angels for twelfth place.

If they keep this up, they might just make it to eleventh place....

Where once there was stumps and dirt, there is now grass and dirt.

We celebrated Mothers Day today by enjoying some Rinaldi's pizza with all of the moms. It was a fun day and we have plenty of pizza left for my offspring to graze on all night long.

Trust me, they really do graze all night long.

And speaking of my offspring, I'm pretty sure my youngest, who is 18 years old, is making his mom a home-made Mothers Day card. I'm pretty sure the construction of this card involves crayons, macaroni and Elmers glue.

He is a good kid.

A little odd, like his dad, but a good kid.

Time for Red Sox.

I'm hoping they win again tonight but being the pessimist that I am, I don't have high hopes.

While I watch the Red Sox, you can click on these links:

Friday, May 11, 2012

Yes, I'm still watching the Red Sox.

I looked at the American League standings this morning and, as amazing as it may seem, the Red Sox are not in last place. They are in third to last place. Despite the fact they are playing like snakecrap, the Twins and the Royals are playing even worse.

And for those of you that thought I might be overreacting when I said there might not be enough games left in the season for them to overcome this deficit, let me point out that we are currently 1/6th of the way through the 2012 baseball season.

If there is going to be one bright spot in this season it's going to be that the Red Sox won't fall apart at the All-Star break like they usually do. It's impossible for them to fall apart because they are already the biggest mess in all of major league baseball.

My God, I just realized - it's the 1990's all over again....

So the Red Sox managed to win a game last night. Thank God for Will Middlebrooks because right now, he's the only one on that team that is performing well.

So anyways, this win puts them in third to last place in the American League, tied with the Angels and the White Sox. If they win tonight, they might just jump into fourth to last place along with the Mariners.

So much for the second highest payroll in MLB...

Guess who has grass growing in his back yard!

Thanks to Dave from Lawn Tech who went out of his way to help me with this mess and now I have actual grass growing where once there was nothing but dirt. Pretty soon, The Dog and I will be rolling around in a yard filled with lush green grass.

Well, maybe not The Dog. I haven't figured out if I'm going to let him and his pee anywhere near my grass.

Those of you that have been reading this little treatise since it's inception know that I lack any ability to grow plants of any kind. Specially those plants of the grass kind. Well, Dave provided me with the top soil, the seed, the fertilizer and the instructions (Water. Lots of water.) on what I needed to do and lo & behold, I have grass.

Thanks Dave.

While I'm watching the Red Sox get stomped by the Orioles, I surfed the interwebs and found these interesting links:

I'm getting used to things.

For the last seven years, I've had to write HTML and ASP Script to provide to with a nicely formatted DailyNews©. Now that I've moved everything over to here, all that formatting can be done without me writing a single drop of code.

I like it.

The Red Sox lost again last night. That put them at 11 wins, 14 losses, well below .500 and pretty much in full suck mode.

In this afternoons game, Aaron Cook, a starting pitcher, went and got himself spiked at home plate trying to prevent a run on a passed ball. NESN showed the injury to his kneecap and it looked like his whole knee was ripped open.

In true tough guy fashion, he talked the umpire into letting him getting it taped up and he came back out to finish the inning. Very reminiscent of my little league days when the coach would say, "Tough it out kid. Rub a little dirt on it. You'll be fine."

But in the long run, it didn't matter. They're losing again today as I write this and are now so far out of first place in the AL East that there might not be enough games left in the season for them to catch up.

As I said earlier - full suck mode...

Well, I have things to do this afternoon/evening so here are some links that you can click on while I do those things:

College kids

We made the run up to Burlington today to bring home as much of my daughters "stuff" as we could fit into the station wagon.

She has her own car up there and it's a station wagon but since she is in a room by herself, everything in her room is hers. Also, since she's in a room by herself, she has space for a small couch (futon).

So today we went up and brought home the futon, the microwave, the boxes of widgets, gee-gahs, thing-a-ma-bobs, whatsits and whatever else she felt she could live without. That way, when she leaves after her finals next week, she can just toss the few remaining things, like her fridge, into her car and come home.

I'll figure it out one of these days....

I'm going to wait for a while before deciding if I'm going to register a new domain name (or the old one if it's available).

As I said to John, this is a lot of work and I've been at it for about 6 years. It might be time for me to think about this whole posting on the internet thing.

I'm hoping that the Red Sox have not decided to go back into full suck mode.

They are off tonight and then they have three games against the Orioles. Problem is, the Orioles are coming off a three game series against the Yankees where they managed to take 2 out of 3. This means they are playing some pretty damned good baseball.

The Red Sox better get it together and start playing like it means something or they are going to be in the toilet all season.

My backyard has suddenly sprouted grass.

This, my friends, is a very good thing because I was starting to wonder if maybe I had wasted all that effort.
