Well, that was an interesting night.

I was woken up at least three times last night by the sound of the wind and rain slamming into my house. And every time I woke up, I noticed that my poor dog was staring at me, looking very concerned about the current state of events in the middle east.

Or maybe he was concerned about the sounds of the rain and wind slamming into the saide of my house.

Either way, he was concerned.

Fortunately, I managed to rig up a connection for my generator in case the power went out. That act virtually assured that I would not lose power.

It's like carrying an umbrella - it won't rain if you have an umbrella.

I'm ready for the big blow.

According to the entertaining yet inaccurate weather people, we can epect 40-50 mph winds this evening. I don't know if I believe them but since I still haven't completed the hook-up for my generator, I'm a little concerned we might lose power.

The piece that needs to be completed is the power inlet on the porch. The power cable from the sub-panel has been pulled to the porch but I have yet to cut the opening fro the power inlet. I know, I know, I've been saying that I'm going to do that for the last few months. What can I say, it's cold and I'm a frail old man. I hate working in the cold.

So anyways, what I have now is a hole drilled through the wall into the porch that I've fed the cable through. Then I put a 30amp/250v (NEMA L14-30) plug on the cable. I can now plug the cable directly into the generator.

Hopefully we don't lose power but if we do, I'm ready. When you live in "Tornado Alley - New England Division", you've got to be prepared.

We have a new senator. His name is "Mo".

I'm not sure how we got him as our new senator because no one asked me if I wanted him or if I thought he would do a good job. Hell, no one has even bothered to tell me about him.

Actually, the more I think about it, I'm betting he can't be any worse than our previous senator, John "I'm rich! Filthy, Stinking, Rich!" Kerry. And who knows, maybe when he takes the senate floor for the first time, someone will yell out, "Hey Mo! Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck. Woo Woo Woo Woo..."

No worries.

I spread a little calcium chloride on my driveway last night so it was fine this morning. No slipping and no sliding.

And according to the highly knowledgeable yet extremely inaccurate weather guys, it's going to be in the high 40s tomorrow. That means that whatever ice there is will be gone by tomorrow night.

I may have made a grievous error - I shoveled my driveway.

I got home around 3:30 this afternoon and decided that I would shovel the inch or two of snow off my driveway. My wife, who also got home early, poked her head out the door and said, "I just left you a voice message asking if you wanted me to do that. I was wondering about the ice that may come later."

That's when I made what might be my error.

I said, "Nah. I'm going to shovel it. If it ices over, I'll worry about that tomorrow morning."

So I'm hoping that when I wake up tomorrow morning, I won't find a 1/4 inch of ice on my driveway.

I have an idea

In the late 1700s, a group of farm boys got together in a local pub, had a few beers and managed to write a document called "The Constitution of The United States". The end result was a a well-written, understandable document that defines the basis for our entire government and they did it using only 4,400 words.

I would like to propose a bill that says all future government regulations shall not be allowed to exceed 4,400 words. If a bunch of guys can explain the United States of America in 4,400, then every new law, code or regulation should be less than that.

This includes the US tax code.

*

In case you haven't guessed, we have begun the arduous, complicated and thoroughly enjoyable task of doing our taxes. We don't have all of the necessary paperwork but we've got enough to at least start them. And over the years, we've found that spreading this out over a few days is lot less stressful than trying to get it done all in one sitting.

Yay! I love doing taxes!

A nice quiet Saturday.

I had planned on finishing the final link in my generator connection today but to be honest with you, it was too damned cold for me. I decided to spend the day sitting in my recliner watching TV shows that I had DVRd over the last week.

Sometimes you gotta be a lazy bum. It's good for your soul.

Don't be shocked by what I'm about to say...

The government is lying to us.

Again.

I keep hearing President Obama say that the economy is improving and good jobs are being created.

Well, I'm here to tell you that I don't believe him.

No sir, I don't believe him one bit.

There are lies, damned lies and statistics.

I was driving in this morning listening to Massachusetts State Rep David Linsky tout his newest legislation, 'HD02678 - An Act to Reduce Gun Violence and to Protect the Citizens of the Commonwealth' and I noticed that he kept saying, "30,000 people die each year as a result of gun violence in the United States."

That number shocked me so I decided to go look at the FBI Uniform Crime Statistics to verify it.

You know something? It's bad enough that the legislators of Massachusetts feel the need to legislate for the sake of legislation but do they have to lie to us as well?

If you look at that table and add up the columns, you will see that there were a grand total of 12,664 murders in the United States in 2011. Of those 12,644 murders, 8,583 involved a firearm and 4,081 involved something else.

Now lets be realistic, 8,583 murders is a pretty big number and we really should do something about it but for Christs sake, don't lie to me to make your point. If you are going to restrict my constitutional right to own a firearm, at least use real data to make your point.

In other words, if you are going to screw me, at least have the common decency admit that it's for your own pleasure and ego, you arrogant little twit.

Oh, and by the way Mr. Linsky, if you can prove that the data provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation is inaccurate or incomplete, I will be more than happy to post an update along with whatever data source you provide as long as that data source is a legitimate data source.

And just to be clear, I do not consider "The Coalition of Concerned, Overly-Protective, Easily-Frightened, Non-Gun-Owners for a Safer, Greener, Less-Obese America" or whatever website you got your data from, to be a legitimate data source.

Kinda chilly this morning....

It was a bit cold this morning but not as cold as where my daughter is. This morning, the air temp was -8° (for those of you with bad eyesight, that is 8° below zero) and there was a twelve mph breeze. That put the windchill right around -27°.

That, my friends, is freakin' cold.

Fortunately for my daughter, her mother insisted on getting her high-quality outerwear. This means that while she probably looked like Randy, the little brother in A Christmas Story, she managed to survive the cold long enough to get across campus.

As for us down here, well let's just say that it was cold. Also, let me just say that when you own four cars, you have four times the car problems that everyone else has.

This morning, my wife announced that her car wouldn't start. That's not quite the way I wanted to start my morning but it is what it is and I drove her to work.

This afternoon, we had the battery replaced (it was 8 years old) by our mechanic but after they replaced it, the turn signals, the high beams and the dashboard lights wouldn't work.

As of this moment, her car is sitting at the mechanics where tomorrow morning they will diagnose the problem and hopefully fix it without it costing us thousands of dollars.

A few more rules.

I came across a few more rules that you might want to keep track of:
  1. If you are rich, be generous and gracious. If you are poor, just be gracious. If you are neither rich nor poor, don't act like you are. It's annoying and it makes you sound like an ass.
  2. You don't know everything. Only Cliff Clavin knows everything and trust me, you don't want to be like Cliff Clavin.
  3. Save things that you think you might need but remember that if you save everything, you are one of those crazy hoarder people and you should go see a shrink.
  4. Some people aren't very bright and no amount of education, cajoling, lecturing or talking is going to change that. It's just the way it is. Just because they are stupid doesn't make them bad. Some of the nicest people I know have to be reminded to inhale every once in a while.
Thus ends another installment of A Few More Rules You Might Want To Keep Track Of.

*

Seems that President Obama, with his overwhelming 51% of the popular vote, has decided that he speaks for all Americans whether they agree with him or not.

I hate when people do that.

Someone needs to point out to him that 49% of the population did not agree with him or his policies. That's half the country that didn't want him to have a second term. Someone should point out to him that when half of the people want something and the other half don't, it's best to compromise a little bit. Pissing off half the country, which is something he's already done at least once, is a bad thing and results in long-winded speeches and tirades being offered by "political analysts" on a nightly basis.

No one want's to listen to a bunch of talking heads going off about how wrong the other side is. All this does is fire up the fanatics and we all know what happens when fanatics get fired up.

During my psyching, I will try to get some other things done but I make no promises. Psyching takes a lot of effort and concentration.

I understand there is a football game of some type going on this evening. Something about the ACF or FAC or AFC Championship. Not sure what that means but if there is nothing else on television, maybe I might watch a bit of it. I always liked watching football. Especially when the goalie makes a good save or the striker scores a goal from midfield.

We have returned our youngest to his institution of higher learning, once again leaving us with a nice, quiet, adults-only house.

Well, The Dog is still with us but he is a surprisingly quiet dog. He doesn't bark unless a stranger shows up at our door. And when I say he doesn't bark, I mean it he really doesn't bark. When he wants to be let back into the house, rather than bark, he kinda bangs his head on the door a few times.

The pro-gun vs. anti-gun debate continues and so far, it looks like no one is winning. There are, however some interesting things happening.

In New York, they banned all weapons that have a magazine capacity greater than seven rounds. What they neglected to do in their mad rush to solve the worlds problems was take into account that most law enforcement officers are issued a weapon with more than seven rounds.

Since they forgot to put a provision into the law that exempts law enforcement, that means that effective Thursday morning, every cop, game warden, trooper, security guard and sheriff in the state of New York was in violation of state law and subject to arrest.

This is funny stuff here people. Funny stuff...

Rules: Part II

I know you might find this shocking but I managed to come up with a few more rules.

Here they are:
  1. The more you tell someone they can't do something, the more they want to do it. It's human nature. Your best bet is to mind your own damned business.
  2. Take a deep breath before you speak. This not only relaxes you, it gives you a second to think about what you want to say and will hopefully stop you from saying something stupid like, "Holy crap Doris! Are you pregnant or just really fat?"
  3. Your mom and dad weren't wrong when they stopped you from doing stupid teenager things. Maybe you should tell them that and then thank them for keeping you alive long enough to reach adulthood.
  4. According to the Declaration of Independence, you have certain unalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That means it is not the government's job, my job or anyone elses job to make you happy, it is your job to make yourself happy.
  5. Being a tree-hugger, a Jehovah Witness, a concerned liberal democrat or a watchful conservative republican is a choice that you made for yourself. Don't preach to me about your choice because to be honest with you, I don't care. As a matter of fact, get the hell off my porch before I poke you with a sharp stick.
  6. If you are going to make a left hand turn on a busy street, try to move over to the left side of the travel lane so that the rest of us have a chance of getting by you on the right.
Like I said yesterday, as I come up with more, I'll add them to the list.

The Adult Book of Rules

There is a news story about a guy who found a book written by two little girls that contained a list of rules that kids should follow. This got me thinking that maybe there should book that contains a list of rules the adults should follow and I think I'm just the guy to put one together.

So with no further adieu', here is the beginning of a list of short, simple rules that adults should follow:
  1. Driving below the speed limit is just as annoying, and dangerous, as driving above the speed limit.
  2. If the sign says "No Dogs Allowed", it means all dogs, including your precious little rat-dog or your lovable, boisterous, uncontrollable yellow lab.
  3. If the sign says "12 items or less" and you show up with a carriage filled with 20 or 30 items, you deserve to be flogged.
  4. Someone went through a lot of time and expense to paint all those lines on the parking lot. If you don't park between the lines, your car should be towed to a junk yard in another city.
  5. If you want your constitutional rights to remain intact, don't fly on a commerical airline. Air travel is stressful enough as it is and having some moron ranting about constitutional rights while passing through security just makes it worse. It is in your best interest to shut up, get on the plane and sit down in your seat so that we can all get to where we want to be.
  6. When you are 20, you look good in spandex. When you are 50, you don't look good in spandex. Stop wearing it.
  7. Take a bath or shower and brush your teeth on a regular basis. Humans stink and no one wants to be standing next to you while you are emitting stink rays like Pepe' Le Pew.
As I think of more, I'll add them to the list. Feel free to send me your own recommendations.

Time for a brain dump.

  1. I have never owned, nor have I ever worn, one of those yellow rubber LiveStrong wrist bands.
  2. The Weather Channel needs to stop giving every snow storm a name and calling it "dangerous". It's annoying and misleading.
  3. The NRA and the Federal Government are two entities made up entirely of arrogant, pompous, self-important idiots who lack the ability to see other points of view or care about other opinions.

*

I still have welts from my time at the Holy Cross elementary school.

I managed to get myself whacked by a ruler or one of those pointers on a pretty regular basis and I'm not alone. There are other guys walking around that got beat as regularly as I did.

Sister Francis Julie wielded a snappy little oak ruler and she could catch you with it when you least expected it. And then, when I got home, I caught hell from my mom and dad for acting up in school.

There was no rest for the wicked....

*

I waved at Terry Francona's dad last week when he walked out of his house as we drove by.

At least I think it was Terry Francona's dad.

It was some old guy that could have been Terry Francona's dad walking out of a house that could have been Terry Francona's dads house so I'm sticking with my story.

This has been my semi-periodical-irregular brain dump.

I am a pizza connoisseur.

After 54 years of consuming every possible pizza sstyle and incarnation, including the 1960s rendition of Chef Boyardee pizza in a box, (aka "cardboard covered in ketchup") I feel qualified to declare myself a pizza connoisseur.

Basically, I know what I like and I know what I don't like:
  • I am not a fan of the Chicago deep dish style pizza. That's not a pizza, it's a pizza casserole.
  • I am not a fan of crispy crust. If I wanted my pizza on a Ritz cracker, I would make it that way.
  • I am not a fan of sharp, tangy sauce. I like my sauce a little sweet with a nice tomato/basil flavor.
  • Pizza should have either mozzarella, provolone or romano cheese. Or all of them. But only them. No other cheese is acceptable. And it should never, ever have any of that Faux-American cheese. You know the cheese I'm talking about - that oil-based yellow crap they put on top of those GodAwful english muffin "pizzas" they used to serve us at school.
  • Pizza should have only meat and vegetables. No fruit. No fish. End of discussion.
Having said that, I can say that if you want a great pizza, go to either Pizza Shoppe in East Longmeadow or Rinaldis in Longmeadow. If you want to reasonable pizza, go to Papa Ginos. If you want something inexpensive to fill you up, go to Fresh Acres.

This has been your pizza connoisseur report.

You're welcome.

I'm Back!!

On Thursday, my cousin was able to fly my aunt (his mom), my mom and myself out to western Pennsylvania for a funeral. It was a quick two hour flight totally devoid of any issues and we arrived in fine style.

On Saturday, my cousin made the call that there was no way we could fly out of western Pennsylvania because not only was the weather bad in western Massachusetts, it was bad all along our route.

What does that mean? That means we got to enjoy a nice leisurely, relaxing nine hour drive through fog and mist into the middle of the night, that's what it means.

I'm glad we were able to get the sisters out there for the funeral and I'm glad we got to see all of our aunts, uncles and cousins but that drive is a pain in the ass.

Short posts abound.

As I mentioned yesterday, I have much to do over the next few days so posting will be mostly links. And those links will probably be few.

For instance, here are todays few:

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

My Aunt Mary passed yesterday.

I always said that if I was going to write a book, it was going to be about the Koziar family. They were farmers, steel mill workers and soldiers from Western Pennsylvania who were, to say the least, unique, yet they still managed to represent the best of Americana.

They were all independent, self-sufficient, hard working and hard partying.

So, before this list gets lost in the archives of my brain, and in no particular order, I present to you the 14 children of Elias and Anna Koziar:

Angela (aka "Nellie")
Steve
Paul
Ted
John
Joe
Mary
Francis
Margaret
George
Carolyn
Leona
Leo
Ann

The boys were all a little crazy, the girls were wonderful and when I was a kid, I looked forward to the summers when we spent time on the farm with them. They taught me how to shoot, took me camping, taught me to build and repair machinery, showed me how to grow food & raise livestock, reminded me not to touch the electric fence, laughed at me when I touched the electric fence and yelled at me when I accidentally made my brothers touch the electric fence.

But best of all, they showed me how to love life and have a good time. They were a tight clan and the weekend card games were always filled with laughter and lots of "bullshit repellent".

Since I will be traveling, posting will be sparse for me over the next few days.

I am not a fan of Mondays.

As I told John this morning, weekends should be four days long. I could really get into working three 12 hour days and then having four days off.

Or even better, work one 12 hour day, have a day off, work one 12 hour day, have a day off, work one 12 hour day, have two days off. That would be perfect.

Looks like The Dog may not require surgery after all.

The vet took a look at him this mronign and said that while he definitely did something to his leg, it's not a torn ligament. His best guess is it could be a pulled or possibly torn muscle and the treatment for that is ten days worth of anti-inflammatory drugs.

In everyones opinion, including The Dog, taking pills for ten days is way better than going through surgery.

I understand that the NHL has settled the dispute between the players and the owners and they will now begin playing hockey.

Big deal, screw hockey.

I would like to point out that we are now thirty five days away from pitchers and catchers reporting for spring training. Eleven days after that, the Red Sox will play the Boston College Eagles and the Northeastern Huskies in two split-squad games. Two days later, they will play the Rays.

Like I said, screw hockey, give me baseball anytime.

Here we go again....

Earlier this year, The Dog went in for surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right-hind leg. At that time, we were told that he would more than likely have the same problem with his other leg at some point in the near future.

Well, the near future has arrived and we once again have a three legged dog.

It seems that he made a gallant attempt to scale up onto our bed yesterday and in the process managed to damage his left-hind leg. It is clearly the same injury he experienced on his right leg and that means more surgery.

This is a young dog with a long life before him. He is also one of the best dogs I have ever had the pleasure of owning. And I have owned a lot of dogs over the years. All of that means that I am more than willing to spend the money on this surgery and make the remaining 10+ years of his life with us as enjoyable as possible.

Now I just gotta make sure that he doesn't do something dumb like get hit be a car or something like that.
