Christmas lights are up.

My wife, my daughter and myself managed to get the Christmas lights up and functional this afternoon. We always do it the Saturday after Thanksgiving because in the past, we've found that New England usually experiences a little something we call "snow" between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The one thing I hate is trying to get the lights up when everything is wet and cold.

Last day of vacation.

Fortunately it's also Friday and that means it's the weekend.

That means I have two more days off.

It doesn't suck to be me.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Hopefully you all enjoyed your day and you ate too much. If you didn't eat too much, then I hope you at least ate enough.

If you fried your turkey this year, I hope it went well for you.

If you oven-roasted your turkey this year, I hope it went well for you.

If you broiled your turkey this year, I hope it went well for you.

Well, at least it wasn't snow.

At 6:00 this morning, it was pouring buckets. Fortunately for me, I cleaned my gutters last Saturday so there were no annoying overflows to flood my basement.

In other rain news, The Dog wasn't overjoyed with the it because, hey, when you gotta pee, you gotta pee.

He forced himself to go out to conduct his business but as he walked out, he shot me a look over his shoulder that was basically an accusation that I was inflicting extreme cruelty upon him.

I let him back in and dried him off with a towel.

If there is one thing The Dog enjoys, it's getting toweled off. He loves it almost as much as going for a walk. That small act more than made up for my forcing him out into the rain and once again, he loved me with all his heart and soul.

Traffic sucks

Today was the day for college offspring to return home. My daughter left school around 11:30 or so and made it home safe and sound.

I drove to New Hampshire to get my son this afternoon and I gotta tell you, the traffic sucked. Normally it takes and hour and forty five minutes. Today it took almost two hours and fifteen minutes.

There is a lot of construction on I-91 so that slows things down but the big thing slowing everyone was all the state troopers pulling everyone over and generating revenue for our cash-strapped state.

I saw at least twelve cars pulled over by troopers and in each case, I'm betting they wrote out a $100+ ticket. That's a lot of revenue.

Another cold day

I spent some time with my friend Pat today. He will probably be in the hospital for another day or two. He has some fluid buildup and they are trying to get as much out of him as possible.

Hopefully he'll be home before Thursday because I bet the Thanksgiving meal in the hospital isn't all that good.

*

I did manage to get the leaves off my lawn, again.

Anyone care to place a wager on how long they stay off my lawn?

Man, it's chilly out there.

The Dog and I went for a walk today and I kinda wish I had not worn my most worn-out jeans. They're a little on the thread-bare side and with the wind blowing the way it was, I might as well have been wearing shorts.

*

Keep a good thought for my friend Pat. Seems he ended up in the hospital and he'll be there for a few days.

Ain't that the way of the world - the man retires from work and ends up in the hospital. He has no luck whatsoever.

So much for my clean lawn.

At 11:00 this morning, there were no leaves on my lawn.

At noon, there were leaves all over my lawn.

Why do I bother...

*

Apparently there is nothing going on in the world today. I searched a lot of news sites looking for information about the NSA spying on US citizens, the President lying to us about health care or the President overriding a law passed by congress but I couldn't find anything.

Maybe they all took the day off to do their lawns.

Nothing to say

Today was a long day so that means short post.

Or, as I like to think of it, No Post.

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Everyone is calculating their date.

As I age, along with everyone else I know, I'm noticing a trend - A lot of my friends are spending a lot of their time calculating the earliest possible date that they can retire.

I personally have a rolling retirement date.

For the last five years, I've been saying, "Give me five more years" and I'm still saying that because I'm not ready to retire. I like what I do and I'm good at it. Also, I have a lot of "seniority".

For the record, "seniority" at my company means nothing except for how much vacation time I get. I'm at the max for vacation time and that means I get to enjoy about six weeks off every year. That's almost like being semi-retired so why be in a hurry to retire.

I have some friends and relatives that work in jobs where I think they should retire as early as humanly possible. As a matter of fact, I think they should retire today but who am I to tell them what to do.

I am not in one of those jobs. My job has no risk or hazards associated with it. As a matter of fact, the greatest risk in my job is my getting a fat ass from sitting in a chair for too long.

Besides, I still have kids in college and a mortgage to pay. I'm pretty sure retirement isn't in my immediate future.

I have a question...

Who gave President Obama the authority to say, "It's okay for you to ignore that law"?

Follow my thinking on this because that is exactly what he has done.

He told the insurance companies they can let people keep their current insurance policies.

The law, as I understand it, specifically says that policies that do not meet the standards established by the Affordable Care Act, a law enacted by the congress, are to be terminated.

President Obama, in order to appear to not be a lying sack of weasel spit, said to the insurance companies, "You can ignore that part of the law and let people keep their policies."

What gives him the right to issue a proclamation that overrides congressional legislation?

Can he issue that kind of proclamation for any law?

Can he suddenly say, "You know that law that says you can't steal stuff from Walmart? Yea, well, go right ahead and ignore that law because that Walmart place has a lot of stuff it doesn't need."

Isn't there a constitutional law that only congress can legislate? In other words, only congress can make or change laws?

I'm just askin' is all.

I have no links and no words today. I'm tired and I'm going to bed.

Man, I can pick 'em.

If you had told me it was going to be 70° and sunny on November 18th, I would have called you a liar.

It was a very nice day to not be at work.

We managed to get every leaf off the lawn today

I'd like to think we were done for the year but when I look around my neighborhood I can't help but notice there are still a lot of trees with leaves on them.

Must be that global warming thing.

*

While I was mowing my lawn, my brain did some thinking and I've come to the conclusion that the Affordable Health Care Act was actually put together by Rob Ford.

*

So after spending the entire day cleaning gutters, raking leaves and getting my hair cut, I didn't have time to see what was happening on this planet of ours.

Syria has become another Afghanistan.

The so-called "rebel fighters" have started enforcing there own version of sharia law and it has become quite common for groups of "religious police" to roam the streets, flogging or whipping women who aren't covered from head-to-foot or are deemed to be behaving in a manner that violates the muslim faith.

It's also become common for these same "religious police" to execute people for blasphemy. They are shooting anyone that they feel is acting in a way that denegrates their religion. In other words, you are either a strict muslim or you are dead.

And then there is this....

Long Day = Short Post

Before I leave you with some links, I want you to read this story.

The key phrase in that story is: "Changing the rules after health plans have already met the requirements of the law could destabilize the market and result in higher premiums for consumers."

What that means is that the the insurance companies estimated the premiums for ObamaCare based on the assumption that the rules would create a certain pool of people. With the change in rules, the makeup of that pool will change. There will be fewer young, healthy people. That means higher per-person health care costs.

Get ready folks - your health insurance is about to get expensive....

Let's talk about the dead zone.

As some of you might be aware, there is a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. It is an area where there is not enough oxygen in the water to sustain life.

The lack of oxygen is caused by nitrates entering the gulf from the Mississippi River. These nitrates are man-made fertilizers that, as it turns out, algae just love.

They gobble up the nitrates and make a lot of baby algaes which grow into adults, gobble up more nitrates and make more babies. The algaes keep gobbling and having babies and before you know it, there is a little something that scientists call an algae bloom.

It's all those fat, horny algae that deplete the oxygen from the water.

Researchers have been tracking this dead zone for years and much to their surprise, it started growing in the early 21st century. This caused them to do what they do best, which is research why it's growing.

They have come to the conclusion that it is getting larger because more nitrates are entering the gulf.

Lots more nitrates.

That means lots more fat, horny algae.

This got them to thinking about why would there be lots more nitrates entering the Gulf of Mexico and they have come to a conclusion that is probably going to cause the federal government to have a small seizure.

The cause of the increased nitrates is an increase in the amount of fertilizer being used to grow corn.

Why are we suddenly growing more corn? Because the federal government mandated that we grow more corn, that's why we are growing more corn.

You see, the government got it through it's thick head that ethanol was the solution to all of the planets problems. They decided that if we used more ethanol and less gasoline, we would not run out of oil and we would cut down on pollution.

Turns out that in order to keep up with the demand for ethanol, farmers have started planting more corn. They are plowing under huge tracts of land that was previously nothing more than natural grassland that no one was fertilizing.

So now we have millions of additional acres of land being fertilized with nitrogen-based fertilizer and those nitrates are running into all the stream and rivers. Those streams and rivers are in turn running into the Mississippi and then straight into the Gulf of Mexico. This is depleting the oxygen and killing off all life in an area that exceeds 6,000 square miles.

And I'm not just talking about all the dead fish. I'm talking about the livelihood of thousands of people who fish the waters of the gulf in order to support their families.

I guess the federal government isn't always as right about things as they seem to think they are, are they....

A little snow this morning.

I was treated to a bit of a wet snowfall this morning. Nothing major, just a smattering of flakes as I was driving to work.

This means that if you haven't already started up your snowblower or your generator, you best get to it. The last thing you want to discover is that either one of those things doesn't work on the day you really need it.

Like that day back in 2011 when we got two feet of wet heavy snow and all the trees came down....

If come to the conclusion that the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats is the Tea Party.

Ever since the Tea Party started demanding that the Republicans stop being reasonable, the Democrats have taken over more and more of the government. There is no longer a balance of power and I blame the Tea Party.

Someone needs to stop those people...

I just got a lower cellphone bill !!!

My eldest offspring is no longer on my cellphone plan and that means we just got ourselves a lower cell phone bill!

His phone was passing away and he isn't eligible for an upgrade on Verizon for another few months. Rather than deal with a broken phone, he bought himself a shiny new Google Nexus 5 and opened an account on T-Mobile.

I always liked T-Mobile when we had them for our provider but at the time, they had zero coverage north of the Massachusetts border. Since two of my children are in college north of the border, we needed to switch back to Verizon.

At some point, when my children are no longer in college,  we will probably cancel Verizon and move back to T-Mobile. Verizon is kind of expensive for what they give you.

Speaking of offspring, my daughter came home to visit with us this weekend. I guess she needed some sleep and some mom food. Trust me, she got plenty of both.

It was nice to see her.

The "Obama Apology-A-Thon" has entered its second week.

The man sure is doing a lot of apologizing but....

....I can't help but notice that ever since he started apologizing for things, the media has started covering his apologies as if they were the biggest thing to happen to this country since Kraft gave us individually-wrapped processed cheese slices.

I've also notice that ever since they started covering his apology-a-thon, they've stopped talking about the NSA spying on American citizens.

I'm sensing a plot to get us to forget about the whole "violating the Fourth Amendment" thing...

Just so everyone is clear on this....

The guy who decided to murder Richard Martin, Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu and Sean Collier feels that he is being isolated by the harsh conditions imposed on him by the federal judicial system. He would like the prison to relax those harsh restrictions, particularly the restrictions imposed on him regarding his ability to communicate with people.

He wants to be able to talk to people.

Just so we are all on the same page, here is the note he wrote and left in the boat in Watertown when he thought he was going to die:
"The U.S. government is killing our innocent civilians but most of you already know that. As a M(uslim) I can’t stand to see such evil go unpunished, we Muslims are one body, you hurt one you hurt us all ... ?(T)he ummah (i.e., the Muslim people) is beginning to rise ... Know you are fighting men who look into the barrel of your gun and see heaven, now how can you compete with that? We are promised victory and we will surely get it."

He wants to be able to spread his message. He wants to communicate with his brothers in arms. He wants to get the victory that he believes he will surely get.

I'm betting that the parents of Richard Martin, Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu and Sean Collier would all like to get their children back but that's not going to happen, is it.

I say let the little f*ck rot in a 10 foot long by 4 foot wide by 8 foot high cage, isolated from everyone except his attorney, until he is tried by the federal courts and found guilty. Then execute him as quickly as they did that other little f*ck, Timothy McVeigh.

There is no place in our world for anyone that blows up children.

I have a great life.

Yes, I'd like to be rich but I'm not. What I am is comfortable. I live in a nice house in a nice town with nice neighbors. I have a great family, a great Dog and a great job.

All of that combines to give me a great life.

Just thought I'd share that with you so the next time I start ranting about something like the government or our society in general you can feel free to roll your eyes and think to yourself, "What an idiot."

Pat is alive and relaxed.

I talked to my friend Pat, the "retiree", today and he's killing me.

Killing me, I tell you.

He says he is sleeping until 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning and he kept mumbling something about "Going to the Early Bird Special".

In other words, he is relaxed and enjoying himself for a few weeks. After that, he'll start pursuing his other interests and probably end up making more money than he's ever made in his life.

Killing me...

I love the MLB channel

This afternoon, I watched the American League Divisional Series!

Yes, I know who wins and, yes, I've already seen all of those games but hey, a baseball junkie will take whatever fix he can. Even if it's old junk.

*

So before I sat down and watched old baseball games, I managed to get my lawn cleaned, my driveway cleaned and my snow blower started up for the season.

I always run my snow blower in late October / early November because I would rather find out it needs work now than on the morning of the first major snowfall
