The back yard work is done

My wife spent several hours on her hands and knees cutting all the old, dead bushes out of the side garden and then pulling all the leaves out from under her plot of pachysandra.

I helped her for a while but my back doesn't like to spend any more than an hour or two raking leaves and cutting branches.

So anyways, she is happy with the way things look and once we no longer have a dog, I'll roto-till the backyard and plant some grass back there. Who knows, maybe one day we'll actually have a backyard.

The Bruins won again this afternoon, giving them an 8 point lead over the Blues. The Blues are playing at 8:00 tonight and if they win, the Bruins will still hold a 6 point lead.

As for the Red Sox, they lost to the Yankees today. It was a pretty good game and they almost pulled it off but it's spring training and it's not a matter of winning, it's a matter of finding out what everyone can do and then putting together the best team possible.

Hopefully they put the best team together and actually play well.

And speaking of the Red Sox, my buddy Walt is down there filling me in what the new players are like and how the team is doing. He is absolutely a huge Red Sox fan so I have to take what he says with a grain of salt.

He thinks everyone is great. I just have to read between the lines and find out which ones he thinks are the best.

Dear Dell, Screw You

I don't know who gave Dell my email address but whoever it was deserves to be beat about the head and shoulders with a raspberry cane.

Dell started sending me "Welcome to Dell!" emails today and when I tried to unsubscribe, they told me I had to give them my email address. Screw them. The last I;'m going to do is confirm my email address with them.

Fortunately GMail provides a "block this sender" option and I have told gmail to treat any emaiol from Dell as spam. Why did I do that? because it's spam, that's why.

I hate spam.

Well, this has been the worst week for my retirement accounts. I'm pretty sure a lot of people are really screwed because they're already retired and aren't contributing to their funds. That means they aren't really going to catch that bounce when the market turns around.

I just hope it bounces soon.

The Bruins won and the Lightning lost. This means the Lightning is no longer in second place but the Bruins are still in first place. They are 6 points ahead of the Blues.

The Bruins added two new players and watching last nights game, they are good adds.

This team is looking & playing like a first place team and their are only 17 games left in the regular season.

I'm a happy fan.

Twelve percent

The DJIA has dropped 4% today. It's down 12% in only 4 days.

At this rate, I'm never going to be able to retire.

On the upside, we had no phone calls from politicians today.

Guess they all took the day off.

The hockey game is on at 7:30 this evening so I should be able to watch at least 2 periods.

While I do that, you can do these:

Wednesday, February 26, 2020

I may not have coronavirus but....

....it's kicking my ass.

My financial ass, that is.

The DJIA has dropped about 2,000 points in 3 days. That's about 8% of its value.

Think about that for a minute -  The market dropped 8% in 3 days.

The upside to all of this is that I like dividend equities and I roll the dividends back in by purchasing additional shares. Now that the shares are cheaper, I'll just be buying more of them. When the market goes back up, I'll be rich I tell ya! Filthy Stinking Rich!

Well, I will definitely be at least two of those things...

The Bruins lost last night but so did the Lightning so the Bruins maintain their 5 point first place lead in the NHL.

As for the Red Sox, they beat the Pirates this afternoon and I gotta say, the new kids are playing their hearts out. I suspect more than a few of them will be on the team next month when they take the field in Toronto to open the season against the Blue Jays.

I will be glad when this election thing is over with. We are constantly getting phone calls from all of these very important people who are all very excited to tell us to vote for their very qualified candidate.

I hate very important people who are very excited about something. They make me think of Steve Balmer.

Today was Maura Healey, Attorney General of Massachusetts who is very excited to tell us to vote for her highly-qualified and very good friend Elizabeth Warren.

Personally, I think Maura Healey is a first-class jerk who wants to take away my constitutional right to keep & bear arms and Elizabeth Warren is lying sack of weasel doody who wants to take all of my hard-earned money and give it to other people.

Don't get me started on the rest of the pack...

Did I mention that JFK died?

Back in November of 1963, The President of the United States was assassinated. He was buried 6 days later and a month later, LIFE magazine published a special edition chronicling his life.

Then we all moved on.

In other words, we spent less time talking about the Kennedy assassination than we've spent talking about Kobe Bryant getting killed in a helicopter crash.

I get it, he was famous but it's not like he cured cancer, solved climate change or invented unlimited, free, renewable energy. He was a basketball player fer cripes sake.

Can we stop talking about him now?

This is almost as bad as when Michael Jackson killed himself with his nightly propofol injection.

I'm gonna watch some hockey.

Oh well

I'd like to say that I forgot to post yesterday but I didn't actually forget, I just didn't feel like it.

We worked in the yard for a good portion of the day and then I watched the Red Sox lose to the Orioles. At some point, I thought to myself, "Oh, I need to do that damned bloggy thing.... Ah, the hell with it. No one will miss it and if they do, they should probably re-evaluate their current life goals."

I'm thinking doing this on daily basis is a bit much. I think I'll start doing whenever I feel like it instead of every day.

And that is all I have to say about that.

The Red Sox won

After watching this afternoon's ball game, I can honestly say that I am not all that concerned about the Red Sox. They played well and seemed to be enjoying themselves, which is a good sign that there aren't any assholes in the clubhouse.

It's a good start to the spring training season and hopefully it continues.

As for the other sport in our lives, the Bruins won last night despite the fact I was only able to watch one period. They are currently 5 points ahead of the Lightning who finally lost a game.

Both teams play tonight with the Lightning playing at 8:00 and the Bruins playing at 9:30. That means I will have no idea who won and who lost until tomorrow morning.

Dinner is done and hockey awaits.

While I figure out what to do with my time between now and then, you can enjoy these:

Only caught the first period.

I managed to make it through the first period last night and found out the Bruins won when I checked the scores this morning. This means they are once again 3 points ahead of the Lightning.

There are, I believe, only 24 games left in the season. If they can maintain that lead over 24 games, it will be amazing. It will also give them home rink advantage in the playoffs.

Brock Holt has left the building.

He is no longer a free agent and will be spreading his joy, and skills, in Milwaukee while wearing a Brewers uniform.

This is, in my humble opinion, worse news than the Betts trade. I liked watching Holt play baseball.

The Brewers fans will enjoy watching him and they will reap the benefits of his very generous heart.

Late hockey game

The Bruins are in the Province of Alberta, Canada, in the city of Edmonton to play the Oilers tonight. For those of you that aren't familiar with Canadian geography, Edmonton is in the mountain time zone which is two hours behind us.

What does all that mean? It means that tonight's game is not on at 7:00 eastern time. It's on at 6:30 mountain time which is really 8:30 eastern time.

Bottom line here is I don't think I'll be awake to see the second period...

We are three days away from the Democratic Caucus in Nevada and the polls have Sanders in the lead except for those polls who have Biden in the lead or the polls that have Buttigieg in the lead which of course means the polls that have Klubach in the lead are vastly underrated.

Got all that?

Good.

Now explain it to me because as near as I can tell, these are all the same pollsters who, back in 2016, kept telling us Rodham was going to beat Trump and be the next President of the United States.

They are either liars or morons and I'm leaning towards liars.

I've about had it with this weather.

I would like to go flying but this weather is making it near impossible for me to do that. Every time I have time to go, it's crappy out.

At this point, I want to go up with my instructor simply because it's been almost 3 months since I last flew and I want to have someone who can cover my ass and take the controls if I screw up.

Don't get me wrong; I don't want to screw up and I don't think I will but I'm a cautious flyer who doesn't take unnecessary risks.

It's February and I'm already experiencing politician overload. There are dozens of television commercials blasting about how great [insert lying politician name here] is and how he/she is going to make my life great by [insert cause célèbre here].

As much as I want spring and summer to get here, I'll be glad when November is over with and we can have at least 3 years of peace and quiet.

Still no hockey and the first baseball game I can pay attention to is on Saturday. Oh, and I have confirmed that my buddy Walt is down in Fort Meyers, ready to fill me in on all the game action.

No hockey and I'm out of DVRs

I did not plan that out very well.

Not only is there no hockey this evening and no hockey tomorrow evening, I managed to watch all of my Gold Rush DVRs this weekend so I'm stuck with bad television tonight.

I dislike bad television.

Hopefully there is something on Discovery or History or even Cooking/Food channel. A little Storage Wars or American Pickers would give me something to stare at. I would also enjoy some Good Eats or even some Chopped.

This is interesting.

It seems that ABC is carrying the XFL games and I got to watch a little football. It wasn't great football. Hell, I'm not entirely sure I would call it good football but it was football.

I only watched about a half hour because the Bruins were on at 3:30 and I wanted to watch them.

Speaking of the Bruins, they managed to beat the Rangers this afternoon, putting them once again three points ahead of the streaking Lightning.

It was a good game with a lot of action and some pretty good old-time-hockey, as they like to say.

Every time I hear an announce say, "old-time-hockey", all I can think of is the movie Slap Shot and Ogie Oglethorpe.

Tax day

We decided to do our taxes today and that kind of kicked my ass.

In case I've never said it, let me say it now: I hate doing my taxes.

The highlight of the day was the Bruins defeating the Red Wings and staying on top of the pile in the NHL.

Unfortunately, the Lightning won their 10th game in a row which, while a pretty amazing streak, keeps them one point away from the Bruins.

Man, the Tampa Bay Lightning are on a roll

They had their 9th straight win last night, bringing them to within one point of the Bruins.

Neither the Bruins or the Lightning are playing tonight so the standings will be unchanged. Tomorrow the Bruins will take on the Red Wings, who they lost to last week, and the Lightning will take on the the Flyers.

The Bruins need to win and it would be nice if the Lightning lost.

As for this evening, I have stocked up a bunch of Gold Rushes on the DVR so I have something to entertain me until The Dog and I fall asleep.

While I do that, you can do these:

Thursday, February 13, 2020

Still in first place

The Lightning are on an eight game winning streak and they are creeping up on the Bruins in the division race. If they win again tonight, they will be one point behind the Bruins.

The Bruins are off until Saturday so that means I'm watching DVRs and bad television.

In Red Sox news, they have finally appointed a manager. Well, an "interim" manager.

They gave the job to the bench coach, Ron Roenicke, pending the outcome of the MLB investigation around possible cheating in 2018.

None of this matters. What matters is that Brock Holt is still not on the team.

I like Holt, I think they need to offer Holt a job. Holt is the only MLB player to ever hit for the cycle in the playoffs. He plays every position except pitcher or catcher. His teammates love him. The fans love him.

There is no reason to not make him a reasonable offer.

I have no idea who Buttigieg is

But he, along with Bernie the Communist, is winning the democratic presidential primary.

Liz Warren and Joe Biden aren't winning the presidential primary. Neither is Deval Patrick.

I've been busy creating a series of documents and meeting with executive staff, putting together a presentation to the Board of Trustees next week. That means my days are full of decisions and my evenings are full of typing.

Next week things will lighten and I'll get back to talking about things that are going on in the world.

I'm going to watch the first place Bruins play the Canadiens.

Time for some renewals

I realized today, as I was filling out a license renewal form, that I have a lot of licenses & certificates and they all require some sort of periodic renewal.
  • I have a license to drive a car that expires every five years and that was renewed last year
  • I have a license to fly and while that has no expiration date, my medical certificate expires every two years. I have to renew that this year.
  • I have a license that allows me to exercise my 2nd amendment rights that expires every 5 years. That is up for renewal this year.
  • I have a certificate that grants me entry into FBI data presentations and that has to be renewed every year. They review my background every year for that one.
  • I have a certificate that allows me entry into DHS data presentations and, just like the FBI, they also like to poke around in my folder every year.
The bottom line is I have to pay attention to these things so I don't let one lapse. That could turn out to be a very bad thing. I have all of those for a reason and if one goes away, my life as I know it goes haywire and I have to jump through some interesting hoops to get it back.

I'm too old to jump through hoops.

Or anything else for that matter.

New Hampshire is holding its primaries today so I sent my youngest a text this morning telling him to not forget to vote. His reply was, "Oh don’t worry I’m voting! I even volunteered at the campus pool shuttle for a bit today!"

I am, as always, the proud dad.

I'm going to watch some bad television and fall asleep early.

Tough loss this afternoon

The Red Wings goalie was a freakin' wall. The Bruins out shot the Red Wings 2 to 1 but their goalie was incredible. Nothing got past him.

As a result, the Bruins lost the game.

They still remain 3 points ahead of the Capitals but that could change tomorrow when the Capitals host the Islanders.

I was going to post this link with a witty line but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to say something substantial about it.

The headline reads: "Are airline passengers getting more unruly?"

The answer to that question is "No" and here's why:

I traveled a lot in the 80s and 90s and I can tell you that it was a lot easier back then. Yes, we went through metal detectors but not like the ones we have now. They were simple machines that sensed large metal objects. You could leave your keys in your pocket and the machine wouldn't detect them.

Then along came September of 2001 and all that changed.

People now need to wear a minimum amount of clothing, shoes that are easy to slip on & off, have either a Real ID or a passport, pay an extra $25 or $50 for checked luggage that you then have to drag over to a special place for it to be scanned. Oh, and the water bottle you just paid $5.00 for at the airport store? Throw it away because you're not allowed to have more than 3 ounces of liquid.

Then you go through the machine that basically removes your clothing and displays a picture of you naked to the fat guy with the blue latex gloves secreted over in the corner.

Once you get through all of that, you get on the plane and discover that there is no room left in the overhead compartment because no one wants to check their luggage anymore. You finally find a spot to jam your bag and when you sit down, you find out that there isn't enough leg room for a 3 year old to sit comfortably.

Oh, and guess what? Your seatmate is some guy who weighs 300 pounds and is crammed into the seat next to you. He's struggling to put his seatbelt on which means he is basically fondling your ass for 10 minutes while searching for the latch that he keeps dropping between the seats.

Finally, once everyone is settled, the plane taxis to the runway, takes off and flies to its destination which is a hub. It lands and the pilot comes on to explain that due to unforeseen circumstances, the gate is not available and "we'll be just a little bit before we can get you to your destination."

Unfortunately for you, this isn't your destination. It's just a brief layover and if they delay your gate arrival very much longer, you will probably miss your connecting flight.

So after going through all of that, I wouldn't call passengers "unruly", I'd call them "justifiably pissed off"

There's a difference.

Other than hockey, it was a nice quiet day and now I'm done with it.

Good game this afternoon

The Bruins managed to beat the Coyotes this afternoon to extend their lead in first place to 3 points. That means that even if the Capitals win this evening, the Bruins will remain in first place in the NHL.

First place is better than second place.

Rumor has it that the rumored trade between the Red Sox, the Dodgers and the Twins may have fallen apart. This means that Betts is still a member of the Red Sox.

Yay!

It also means Price is still a member of the Red Sox.

Bummer.

Not much to prattle on about

I left work on time, got home on time and was in my sweats and flannel shirt by 5:30. Now I'm watching the news and trying to figure out what to have for dinner.

While I contemplate food, you can contemplate these:

Guess who is in first place in the NHL

With last night's win over the Blackhawks, the Bruins have moved into first place in the National Hockey League.

The Capitals are only one point behind them but since both teams are off until Saturday night, the Bruins will be in first until then.

We are five days away from Spring Training, the Red Sox still do not have a manager and Brock Holt still does not have a team.

I understand why the Red Sox do not have a manager but I am having a very difficult time understanding why a guy like Holt isn't on a team yet. I also do not understand why Boston has not made him an offer.  Then again, maybe they have and we just haven't heard about it.

These links are for you:

So long Mookie.

The Red Sox are going to miss you.

See you around Price, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Speaking of the Red Sox, they are now going in to spring training without a manager, missing a starting pitcher and missing the best player in the American League.

This is shaping up to be a pretty interesting year for them. I guess we'll wait and see what happens next.

So the Senate voted to acquit Donald Trump of all charges.

I know, shocking, right?

Does this mean the talking heads on the news now have to find something else to talk about? Does it mean that the All Impeachment Channel will now become the All Coronovirus Channel?

The Bruins won last night but so did the Capitals. This means they remain in second place in the NHL and a solid 5 point lead in their division.

Tonight, they are in Chicago to play the Blackhawks so the game isn't on until 8:00. That means I'll probably only watch the first 2 periods before nodding off.

Not only is there hockey tonight...

...it's on at a decent hour.

Tonight's game against the Canucks is in Boston so it starts at 7:00. This means there is a good chance I'll actually watch all 3 periods.

The Bruins are 1 point behind the Capitals but, unfortunately, the Capitals are playing the Kings. I say unfortunate because the Kings are pretty close to being in last place while the Canucks are contenders. This means the Bruins are playing a tougher team and the Capitals are playing a guaranteed win.

Hopefully the Bruins win in regulation and get those two points. That will maintain the status quo if the Capitals win in regulation and push them into a tie if the Capitals end up in a shoot out.

I'm hoping for a Bruins win and a Capitals loss. That will put the Bruins into first place.

The Democrats kind of screwed the pooch yesterday when they failed to return the results of the much-talked about Iowa caucuses (caucusi?).

They claim it was a glitch but I can't help but wonder if it was the Republicans that the Democrats would be talking about "voter interference"...

That was a pretty good SuperB owl

The Chiefs managed to recover and win last night's SuperB owl in the final quarter.

It was a tied game at the half and both teams were playing some pretty damned good football. But, as I said yesterday, Mahomes marched his team down the field three times in the fourth period, scoring 21 points and beating the 49rs 31-20.

I would have preferred a Patriots win but I'll take the Chiefs. That win solidified my belief that Mahomes is a hell of a quarterback and it gave Andy Reid the championship win he needed to secure his Hall-of-Fame career.

As for hockey, the Bruins are off tonight so I guess I'll watch a little Gold Rush.

While I do that, you can click on these:

One point

With last night's win over the Wild and the Capitals loss today, the Bruins are now one point behind the Capitals for first place.

They are playing some pretty good hockey and if they can keep it up, they stand a good chance of going into the playoffs in first place in the league. That gives them home ice advantage and in the game of hockey, that's a good thing.

Teams always play better on home ice.

As for this evening there is a little football game on called the SuperB owl and I will be rooting for the Chiefs.

I have nothing against Jimmy Garoppolo but I like Patrick Mahomes. I know the 49rs have a better defense and will be a problem for the Chiefs but over the last few games, Mahomes has proven that he can march a team down field like Tom Brady.

There is something cool about watching a quarterback move his team 85 yards down the field and into the end zone.

For the record, I could care less about the halftime show. Last thing I want to see is some "artist" I've probably never heard of lip syncing his/her greatest hit. I'll just be watching football and commercials. Unless the commercials suck. In that case, I'll just be watching football.

Whatever I end up doing, you should do these:

Old time hockey

Last night's Bruins - Jets game was a hell of a game. The Bruins won it 2-1 and picked up 2 points which is nice but what was even nicer was watching the Bruins hold off two 5 on 3 penalty minutes, preventing the Jets from scoring.

Rask was a wall and the three guys on the line managed to defend against 5 Jets players who were extremely aggressive. It was old fashioned hockey with lots of hitting and checking.

Tonight's game is in Minnesota against the Wild and I would like to see the Bruins turn their 2 game winning streak into a 3 game winning streak.

I made flank steak pinwheels for dinner and man, those are good. We like them with spinach and mozzarella cheese. I cook them to about 140° which is just a bit above rare so that the steak retains its flavor.

I've learned that if you overcook a flank steak, you lose that great beef flavor and it starts to get a texture like shoe leather.

No one likes to dine on shoe leather.
