So long Mooch. We hardly knew ye'

I'm pretty sure that the 1974 Nixon White House was more stable than the 2017 Trump White House.

Just sayin....

The Red Sox went and got themselves an 8th inning setup man and I'm not entirely sure why. They aren't scoring runs and I don't think a setup man is going to help them in that area.

Then again, I'm not Dave Dombrowski and he seems to know a lot more about this stuff than I do.

Here's the radar track from our little sightseeing flight on Sunday.

All-in-all, it was a beautiful day and we both enjoyed the flight.

Here is todays special message from a special spammer:

Half a game behind

The Red Sox lost two out of three to the Royals and Terry Francona is bringing a winning Indians team into town tomorrow.

This is not looking all that good....

I took my daughter on a one hour sightseeing flight today. We started with a quick trip in the pattern just because I like to make at least one trip in the pattern. After that we went out over the Quabbin and headed north to Orange. Then it was south-west to Sugarloaf Mountain. From there it was a quick flight south down the Connecticut to the city of Northampton and finally back to the airport.

She managed to capture my landing from turn-to-final on video:

Not bad. Not bad at all. A little flat but still pretty good considering there was a slight crosswind from the right.

After I got home from flying, I mowed my lawn and then headed over to Johns to see if I could help him get a locked door open.

That means I did not spend any time surfing for interesting stuff. The few links I found are here:

One game behind

The Red Sox have managed to give up their first place to the Yankees who are currently one game ahead.

This is not a good thing and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better because the Yankees are on a roll. They seem to have found the right combination of pitching and hitting.

We helped our youngest move to a new house today and I think my back is going to remind about it for a few days.

He had been living with three others for the last year but they all decided that it was time to try something different. Our youngest and a friend of his found a place for rent in a nice quiet neighborhood.

The house is set into a wooded lot on a hill and it's actually very nice. With only the two of them in the house, they have two spare rooms for their music, a nice living room, a full basement with a washer and dryer (courtesy of us) and a three-season porch off the back.

All-in-all, the move went well and both his mom and I left there feeling like he was moving to a good place.

Only half a game

The Yankees managed to come from behind and beat the Rays last night. This puts them only a half game behind the Red Sox.

This is not a good thing...

As for today, the Royals are bringing their eight game win streak into Fenway. It would be nice to see the Red Sox break that streak.

No baseball tonight.

Actually, that's a lie. There is baseball tonight just not the Red Sox.

The Yankees are playing the Rays tonight and I'm hoping the Rays win.

If the Yankees win, they'll pull within a half game of the Red Sox. If the Rays win, the Yankees will be a game and a half behind and the Rays will be 2 games behind the Red Sox.

I would like the Red Sox to remain at least one game in first..

Well, the Red Sox managed to win one of their games against the Mariners and they remain 1 game ahead of the Yankees.

They are not playing well and they really needed todays win.

I don't care about Price or Eckersley

Those two can bitch at each other all day long as far as I'm concerned. What I am concerned about is the fact that the Red Sox aren't hitting the ball.

Yes, they are in first place in the ALEast but let's face it, the ALEast kind of sucks right now. They are leading the pack of bad teams.

They are not playing well and no one seems to know why.

And what really worries me is the fact that everyone seems to be looking at Devers as some kind of savior. Don't get me wrong, I think the kid will be far better than Sandoval ever was and I'm really hoping he doesn't lock up like a bad brake job but let's face it, he's not a major league ball player.

Trust me folks, if the 20 year old kid who played nine games in AAA is going to be the best player on the team, they got a real problem...

So John McCain went back to Washington today and lectured the entire senate about what a bunch of boobs they are.

Too bad it took him 30 years to tell them that.

One month into my new job.

I spent 30 years working in the cubicle farms at a fortune 100 company and I can say, with no reservations whatsoever, that working at a small university is way better.

The people that work there are a lot more pleasant and relaxed. And I have a lot more freedom and control over what my job is and what needs to get done.

I'm glad I waited as long as I did to go back to work. I think I might just have found the best fit for me.

And there are no cubicles!

The Red Sox aren't on until 10:00 tonight.

That means I will not be awake when the game starts but I might be awake when it ends.

Nice quiet day today.

Today was just a genuinely nice day. We had a little cookout and then I watched the Red Sox lose to the Angels.

The lose is a little easier to take because the Rays lost to the Rangers and the Yankees are currently losing to the Mariners. Even if the Yankees win, the Red Sox will still have a three and a half game lead in first place.

I did a little research on the best way to kill those damned gypsy moth egg masses and found that most of the extension services recommend one of two approaches.

The first method is to scrape the egg masses into a paper bag and then either burn them or microwave them.

Since there are a lot of them on my trees, that seems like a lot of work. Besides, I'm pretty sure my wife would have a problem with me microwaving a bunch of bugs in her microwave.

The second method is to mix a 50/50 solution of soybean oil and water in a spray bottle and thoroughly soak the masses with the oil mixture.

They were very clear in saying that I should only use soybean oil because soybean oil breaks down the water proof coating on the masses and the eggs will drown in the water as well as any ensuing rain fall.

That seemed like a better approach that didn't involve any use of a microwave so I set about looking for some soybean oil.

I went to the grocery store and searched high & low for soybean oil.

I found peanut oil, canola oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, olive oil and corn oil but no soybean oil.

After searching for several minutes, I picked up a bottle of vegetable oil and read the ingredients.

Turns out the generic term "vegetable oil" is what the soybean oil people call their product.

You learn something new everyday.

Thank goodness for Sox In 2

I wasn't able to stay awake last night but NESN reran the game this afternoon. This is a good thing because not only did I get a good nights sleep, I was able to watch the game.

And yes, I know it's not the same watching a game that you know the outcome but I watch baseball for the play.

Tonights game is on at 9:00 which while not as late os last night, it's still late. I'll watch a few innings and then probably fall asleep on the couch.

I forgot to post this last night. It's from yesterday afternoon:

It was a bit warm.

As for today, this is what I discovered when I was mowing my lawn this morning:

Those, my friends, are gypsy moths and their egg sacs. You can bet I'll be destroying them as quick as possible.

I have a feeling that next year may be an interesting year for gypsy moths caterpillars.

I'm going to eat dinner and then try to stay awake for the 9:00 start of tonights game.

I don't like 10:00 games.

Try as hard as I want, there is almost no chance I'll be awake to see the start of tonights game.

Then again, tomorrow is Saturday so maybe I'll stay awake for one or two innings.

Still two and a half games

They won last night but then they went and lost this afternoon.

Since the Rays didn't play today, the Red Sox kept their two and a half game lead in the ALEast. The Yankees play at 10:00 tonight but since they're a full four games behind, it doesn't matter if they win or lose tonight,

Although I think it will be best if they lose.

Since there is no game tonight, I'll be watching Last Man Standing reruns.

Two and a half games

The Rays and the Yankees both lost today meaning the Red Sox started their game with a two and a half game lead in first place.

I'm kind of hoping that tonights game goes better for them and they don't have another 15 inning marathon. I also hope that they remember what their bats are for.

I've been a little short with my posts lately because by the time I get home from work, it's dinner time and then the Red Sox are on. I don't spend near as much time looking at the interwebs as I did when I was retired.

Also, the only thing they are talking about on the news is how the Russians made us all vote for Trump.

I'm pretty sick and tired of reading about that.

Only two games ahead

With last nights loss, the Red Sox are only two games ahead of the Rays.

This is not good.

They need to start stepping on home plate.

Also, I would like to point out that NESN has decided to bring Jonny Gomes in as a "guest" studio analyst.

This should be interesting...

They split the series

The Red Sox managed to split the series with the Yankees by winning last nights game. They lead the Rays by three games and the Yankees by three and a half games.

Eduardo Rodriguez is returning to the mound tonight for the first time in 6 weeks so I'm hoping that things are healed nicely and he retains his control. They are hosting the struggling Blue Jays tonight and if they can figure out what to do with their bats, they might just win.

Here's the radar track of my flight yesterday. Apparently the local radar service at Bradley was a bit busy yesterday because it only tracked some of my flight. That's why it looks like I suddenly took sharp turns and reversed course and it's missing the fourth leg of my flight entirely./

I need to get some pictures of the scenery again. The Connecticut River and the Quabbin Reservoir are full & beautiful and the hills are covered in green.

Those would make nice pictures for my office walls.

I'm going to go eat some dinner and then watch some baseball.

Terrible loss last night and then again this afternoon

After 16 innings of play, the Red Sox bats let the Yankees win last night.

Today's first game in the double header was also a loss when once again, the Red Sox couldn't get to home plate but at least the game didn't last 6 hours.

The second game is at 8:00 and after more than 6 hours of play last night plus another 3 hours this afternoon, they are all going to be pretty burned out tonight.

Hopefully the Red Sox win tonight and split the series with the Yankees because with a four game winning streak, the Rays are sneaking up on them with the Red Sox only two games ahead of them in the ALEast.

As for me, I didn't watch the first game because I was flying.

I went up at 2:00 and did four full stop landings. The pattern was pretty full and we were all landing/taking off on runway 14 which had a slight tailwind. Seems that my time spent with my instructor three weeks ago was well spent because even though I was landing with a tailwind, my landings were spot on and I felt pretty good about things.

I think my flying time for the next few months is going to involve only pattern work so that I can build my skill and confidence back up.

Now that I'm working, I'm only flying on weekends so I'm kind of limited and to be honest with you, flying in a straight line seems like a waste of time unless I have a destination in mind.

I'm going to toss some burgers on the grill and then settle in to watch tonights ball game.

Nice win last night

It wasn't looking good through 8 innings but the Red Sox managed to come to life and hit the ball in the ninth inning, beating the Yankees 5-4 when Benintendi walked with the bases loaded.

Todays game was on at 4:00 and as of 9:45 tonight, it's the 16th inning and the Yankees have just taken a 3-1 lead. It doesn't look good for the Red Sox but one never knows, does one....

I did not get to watch any of the All Star Legends softball game

As a matter of fact, I didn't even watch the Home Run Derby. I watched the old Micheal Keaton Batman movie instead.

As for tonights All Star game, I'll probably watch the first few innings and then look for something else to watch. Let's face it, it doesn't matter who wins or loses and it's being played by a lot of guys I don't really care about.

If Bryce Harper can convince the commissioner of MLB to use his idea, then I'd watch it,

Harper's idea is to let the votes happen as they currently do but then pick the top two vote getters, make them captains and let them pick the players for their teams. That would make for some interesting teams.

Thank goodness we don't have to listen to Chris Berman and his "back back back!" crap.

I'm not entirely sure how much of the derby I'll be watching but I am hoping watch a few innings of the All Star Legends softball game that will be on right after the derby.

Those guys have a good time.

I wonder how much Amazon paid ABCNews for all of the advertising about Prime Day.

Every 10 minutes, ABC local news, ABC national news and ABC talking heads shows have been running stories about Prime Day like it was the first landing on the moon.

The unofficial half way point

Baseball was half over last week when the teams reached 81 games but most folks treat the All Star game as the midway point.

The Red Sox go on vacation with a three and a half game lead in the ALEast.

And I go into the weeklong baseball black hole with plenty of Pawn Stars, Storage Wars and Salvage Dogs on the DVR.

First place no matter what

As of this 7:00 this evening the Red Sox have a three and a half game lead in the ALEast with one game left to be played before the All Star break. That means that no matter what happens between now and then, they will be in first place to start the second half of the season.

The worst case is that they lose tomorrow and the Yankees win. That will leave the Red Sox with a two and a half game lead.

That is a good way to start the second half of the season.

Turns out I was able to watch absolutely no baseball last night but tonight is much better. Not only did todays game start at 7:00 instead of 9:30, I got a great nights sleep last night so I currently do not feel like the walking dead.

The Red Sox lost last night but so did the Yankees so the Red Sox remain four games ahead in first place.

One thing I wanted to bring up was the new guy, Tzu-Wei Lin.

Man, am I tired.

We spent yesterday at Tanglewood listening to James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt. After the concert, they had fireworks which means things didn't end until midnight. We didn't get home until a little before 2:00 this morning.

I got up at 7:00 to go to work this morning with about 4 hours of sleep under my belt.

I'm freakin' exhausted but it was worth it because the concert was pretty good.

Taylor is almost 70 years old and his voice has held up pretty well. Normally I'm not a fan of crowds and as such I tend to avoid things like concerts but at Tanglewood, we set up on the lawn with a blanket, chairs, food, drinks, etc... and basically sit back to listen to the music.

Yes, there are thousands of people around us but it's like the blanket is our private little island and no one really intrudes on that.

Baseball isn't on until 8:00

The Red Sox are in Texas to start a three game series against the Rangers and then it's over to Florida for a four game series against the Rays.

After those games are complete, everyone goes on a short vacation called the All Star break.

Assuming none of them suffer any injuries over the next seven days, Sale, Kimbrel and Betts will be the representatives for the Red Sox. Between today and July 6th, MLB is letting people vote to fill 5 more roster slots and one of the players on the ballot is Xander Bogaerts so it's possible that the Red Sox will have four players on the AL roster.

It's a pretty good bet that Sale will be the starting pitcher for the American League but that's entirely up to the AL manager, Terry Francona.

Thirty one years.

Thirty one years ago today my dad died after undergoing bypass surgery. He was 55 years old.

He never met his any of his grandchildren which is a real shame because in my opinion, he would have made a great grandpa.

One problem with unretiring is that I have to get back into the mode of finding the time to get things done. For the last year and few months I have been able to do things whenever the mood struck or the weather was right.

Now I have to do things when I'm not at work.

That means I spend my weekend just like the rest of you - doing things like lawn mowing and errand running.

And I've gotten used to wearing socks again.

This morning, the Red Sox were in first place, two games ahead of the Yankees in the ALEast.

They both had afternoon games today.

The Red Sox managed to kick the crap out of the Blue Jays and the Astros managed to kick the crap out of the Yankees.

That means the Red Sox are now three games ahead of the Yankees.

This just keeps getting better and better.

Game and a half

The Red Sox and the Yankees both won last night so the Red Sox started the day with the same one game lead they had yesterday.

They played the Blue Jays at 1:00 this afternoon and they beat them handily 7-1. This gave them a one and a half game lead over the Yankees who won't be playing until this evening.

I'm really hoping the Astros beat the crap out the Yankees and give the Red Sox a two game lead.

As for todays game, they discovered what those large wooden sticks are for and they all hit the ball well. Sale pitched like a machine. That man is impressive as hell on the mound and I can only imagine what the opposing batter must think when they face him.
