Six game lead

It took them 13 innings but the red Sox managed to beat the Phillies and take a six game lead in the ALEast last night. They have one more against the Phillies tonight before they take a day off to travel to New York.

In the meantime, the Yankees are starting a two game series against the Orioles so I expect them to win both games and start to pick away at the Red Sox lead.

The worst case scenario is that the Red Sox lose tonight and the Yankees win both games against the Orioles. That will mean the Red Sox and the Yankees will meet each other in a four game series. If the Yankees win all four games, the Red Sox will still be in first place in the ALEast but only by half a game.

The best case scenario is that the Yankees lose one game to the Orioles and then lose three of four to the Red Sox. That would be great because then the Red Sox will be eight games ahead in the ALEast and I will be a very happy guy.

According to the local weather dweebs, today is the last day of comfort for us.

It's going to get humid tonight and tomorrow we will get to enjoy heat and humidity.

I hate heat and humidity.

Price is pitching tonight

I'm always nervous when Price pitches because he is one of those starters that you never know what he's gonna do. His consistency is non-existent and he's just as likely to get lit-up as he is to be throwing BBs and picking the corners.

The problem is that they are facing the Phillies. The Phillies are leading their division right now so this is not some push-over team. I expect them to hit the ball hard and far.

The other problem is that the Yankees are off tonight and then will be playing a two-game series against the Orioles. In case I haven't mentioned it lately, the Orioles are flat-out, without discussion, the worst team in all of major league baseball.

Fortunately, the Red Sox have a five and a half game lead over the Yankees so there is a little buffer.

So Trump is threatening to shut down the government if he doesn't get his way.

Personally, I think shutting down the government for a bit might not be a bad idea...

In other news, Crazy Rudy has decided to start passing his own laws and ignoring others. he announced today that "collusion is not illegal".

Really Rudy? I thought that under certain circumstances, collusion is the base of what most of us call treason.

I'm not saying anyone committed treason but I certainly think that Rudy should not be allowed to determine what is and isn't illegal.

That's what the courts are for.

Before I get to the links, I wanted to give you this story. It is by far the most tragic story I've seen in a long time.

I can't imagine what he must be dealing with.

This is why I live in New England

The temperature today was around 82 with about 50% humidity. That might not be perfect but it comes pretty damned close.

The unfortunate part is that when I called the airport to see if they had any aircraft available today, they told me no. Seems like everyone wanted to fly today.

So instead of flying, I watched baseball and mowed my back yard.

I would have preferred flying.

The Red Sox introduced their newest starting pitcher, Nathan Evoldi, to us today and he pitched a pretty damned good game. They beat the Twins today, taking three games of their four game series and remaining five and a half games ahead of the Yankees.

They are also the best team in all of MLB right now so it's good to be a Red Sox fan.

Tomorrow they start a quick two game series against the Phillies before heading to New York for a four game series with the Yankees.

That's going to be an interesting series and it may very well be an example of what we can expect in October.

I'm going to watch one of them there Star Wars movies now.

Five and a half games

The Red Sox won last night and the Yankees got rained out. The Yankees and the Royals are playing a double-header today and the Yankees lost the first game.

That means that the Red Sox are now five and half games ahead of the Yankees going into tonights games.

If the Red Sox can beat the Twins and the Royals can beat the Yankees, the Red Sox will end the night with a six and a half game lead in the ALEast.

I would like to see them with a six and a half game lead.

I'm going to cook some dinner and watch some baseball. What are you going to do?

Four and half games

The Red Sox lost last night and the Yankees won.

That puts he Red Sox four and a half games ahead of the Yankees.

They got rained out last night

Freakin' Buck Showalter decided to start the game even though he knew it was going to start raining before they made it through one or two innings. They ended up playing two innings before the rains hit hard and washed the game out.

This means the five runs they scored don't count, the three home runs they hit don't count and the innings that David Price pitched doesn't count.

As for tonight, they are in Boston to play a four game series against the Twins. It looks like they might get the game in since the front that brought them rain this afternoon has now moved offshore.

Time for some Information Security stuff.

Exactis "accidentally" exposed it's 340 million record database to the internet last month.

You may be saying to yourself,  "So? I never heard of Exactis. What's the big deal?"

The big deal is that Exactis is a marketing/analysis firm that has been actively collecting all kinds of data about us for the last several years. They know all kinds of things about you. Things like your favorite beverage, how many kids you have, your phone number. what sports you like, your spouse's name, what kind of shoes you wear, how old you are, what your favorite tv show is, etc....

You get the point - they know everything about you.

And those 340 million records?

Well, they are the data repository that Exactis kept on all of us. And by all of us, I mean the 326 million residents of the US and the 36 million residents of Canada.

Here's what I want you to know -

I expect you may start to see "personalized" spam and scam emails. Things like, "Hey Bob. How's Jean? Hope all is well with you and your two kids, Timmy and Lester. Sure would be a shame of little Timmy had a bad accident. How about if you send me a couple of bitcoins so Timmy doesn't accidentally slip on a loaded gun or something like that..."

This is the world we live in now and we all need to be vigilant. Scammers are good at using social engineering to get you to do what they want. Your goal is to be as skeptical as possible and just delete the emails.

In the meantime, I'm hoping this breach gets Congress of it's ass and we get a law similar to Europe. They have a law called the GDPR which basically says, "My information is my information and unless you have my permission, you can't use it. You can't collect it, you can't sell it and you can't analyze it unless I say you can."

They can't win forever.

Last night, the Red Sox lost and the Yankees won. That means the Red Sox were only five games ahead of the Yankees.

I know they can't win every game they play and I know they are going to have bad days but I was really hoping they were going to take all three against the Orioles. Let's face it, the Orioles are the worst team in the MLB right now and if you can't beat them, you are really having a bad day.

Hopefully the Red Sox win tonight because guess what?

The Yankees lost this afternoon.

This means that as of this moment, the Red Sox are five and a half games ahead of the Yankees. If the Red Sox win, they'll be back to six games ahead of the Yankees.

Six games.

The Red Sox are now six games over the Yankees.

The Red Sox won last night and the Yankees managed to lose. Not only did they lose, they also lost Gary Sanchez, their lead catcher. He's out on the 10 day DL trying to unstrain his groin.

If this keeps going the way it's going, the Red Sox will go into August with a nice little lead in the ALEast.

My daughter's guest has returned to Iowa and our house is back to normal.

No flying this week.

My original plan was to go flying this week but it looks like mother nature has a different plan. There are no days that look like good days for flying around.

Oh well, maybe next week.

In the meantime, I've been enjoying the EAA live feed of the OshKosh AirVenture.

The Yankees got rained out last night so the Red Sox are still five games ahead in the ALEast.

Tonight, the Red Sox start a three game series against the Orioles and the Yankees start a three game series against the Rays.

I will be very happy if the Red Sox win all three against the Orioles and the Yankees lose at least one against the Rays.

It's Chinese Food Night so I'm going to make my food run and then settle in to watch some baseball.

That is assuming there is baseball and not just a bunch of rain.

Long day

We spent the day up in New Hampshire visiting with our youngest offspring so that means you get a short post.

The Red Sox lost last night but they won this afternoon. The Yankees won yesterday and they haven't played yet so as things stand right now, the Red Sox have a five game led in the ALEast.

If the Yankees lose tonight, the Red Sox will be going into a three game series with the worst team in all of Major League Baseball.

I am, as always, hopeful.

They won last night

And the Yankees lost. That means when I woke up this morning, the Red Sox had a five and a half game lead over the Yankees.

This afternoon, the Yankees beat the Mets which means the Red Sox go into tonights game with a five game lead. If they win, they'll open it back up to five and a half.

Tonights game is on at 6:10 so I'm hoping to watch all of it.

I'm also hoping they win.

I mowed my lawn even though it didn't need it.

The kinda-drought we are currently dealing with seems to have stunted it's growth so it was more of a trim than a mow which is nice because I don't have to bag it.

Well, I've made some burgers and consumed them. Now I'm watching the aforementioned game.

Baseball is back!

At 7:10 this evening, the Red Sox will start a three game series in Detroit against the Tigers. After those games are done, they will go to Baltimore where they will play a three game series against the Orioles.

My predictions are that they will take two of three against the Tigers and all three against the Orioles.

Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Russia, Russia, Russia.

I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about Russia. The news people have been talking about Russia for almost 2 years now and so far, we don't know anything other than, "Hey! Russia maybe, might have, could have, would like to, probably could have messed with the 2016 election."

For cripes sake, shut the hell up until you know something, will ya.

I watched four innings

Four innings was all I could stand of Joe Buck and his incipient prattle about who did what when they were where.

The man loves the sound of his own voice and thinks he is the smartest guys in the room.

I'm here to tell you that not only is he not the smartest guy in the room, he's actually a blooming idiot.

I spent my morning dismantling old cabinets that we had in our basement. They had been used by my children to store various pants, widgets, doodads and geegaws but since my children no longer reside here, they no longer require that level of storage.

Also, ever since my wife cleaned out her moms house before selling it, she has been on a, "My kids will not have to go through that!" kick and has been emptying our basement of all the residual detritus of the past 25+ years we have lived here.

It's actually kind of a good idea because we sure had a lot of crap.

My friend Pat had one of those nondescript "outpatient procedures" done today.

I talked to him this afternoon and it appears everything worked out as expected.

Thank goodness for that because he already has enough to worry about, like his limited internet speed or the antiquity of his current computer system.

Much needed rain

We got some much needed rain today but it came kinda fast and now I have a puddle in my basement. Fortunately it's not that big and if the dehumidifier hasn't gotten rid of it by tomorrow, I'll break out the wet vac and clean it up.

As for my lawn, I've been watering it about once every three days so it's still a little green. Todays rain will help it green up a little more.

That means I'm gonna have to mow it.

No, I did not watch the Home Run Derby last night and I probably won't be watching a lot of the All Star game past the first inning or so. Once the starters sit down, I'll probably find something else to watch.

I have a few DVRs. Maybe I'll watch "How the Universe Works".

Bad television

We are still in the summer doldrums when it comes to television shows and now there is no baseball.

What the hell am I gonna watch for the next five days?

I dodged a bullet today when I left my car windows and sunroof open. I guess a massive downpour rolled through but my car was parked in the right place and no rain got into my car through the windows or sunroof.

I have no idea how that happened but I'll take any luck I can get.

Maybe I should go buy a lottery ticket.

Maybe I'll watch a little of the home run derby. Maybe I won't. We'll see how that goes.

And the AC is back on

We didn't break 90 today but we definitely had some humidity. We got our grocery shopping done around 9:00 this morning and when we got home, I turned on the fan hoping that it would keep the room cool.

I'm sorry to report that that didn't work and by noon, I shut the house down and turned on the AC.

Thanks goodness for AC.

The Yankees won last night so the Red Sox started the day three and a half games ahead of the Yankees in the ALEast.

As for today, The Red Sox won again today and so did the Indians. This means the Red Sox are going into the All Star break with a four and a half game lead in the ALEast.

I like them having a four and a half game lead.

So now baseball is on vacation until next Friday when the Red Sox will travel to Detroit and play a three game series against the Tigers. I won't be watching much of the All Star game because it's on too late and it's carried by ESPN. I dislike the ESPN announcers and much as I dislike the FOX announcers.

I'm going to go feed the dogs, make some dinner and see if I have any good DVRs.

Here are some links that you might enjoy:

They lost last night

The Red Sox got their butts whooped by the Blue Jays last night but since the Yankees lost to the Indians, the Red Sox held on to their three and a half game lead in the ALEast.

Today was a different story. They managed to beat the Blue Jays but it took them ten innings.

Oh, and they didn't just beat them in ten innings. They beat them in the finest style when Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam walk-off home run.

Not a bad way to end the game

Now all we have to do is hope that the Indians can beat the Yankees again tonight and all will be well.

Tomorrow will the last game for everyone before they all get five days off.

Well, everyone except the guys selected to play in the All Star game. They only get three days off.

My lawn is mowed and the trimmed up nicely. We are in the midst of a not-quite-a-drought-but-a-bit-more-than-a-dry-spell, so the grass isn't growing a lot. That means mowing is quick and painless.

And dusty.

Very, very dusty.

Since FOX is carrying the Yankees/Indians game tonight, I'll probably watch a little bit of that before getting bored with it and nodding off.

The Red Sox won last night but so did the Yankees. That means the Red Sox remain three and a half games ahead of the Yankees.

Lunch with friends

I had an enjoyable lunch with a couple of old retired guys this afternoon. The Bills and I try to get together every month or so and catch up on things.

During this lunch the conversation started with the death of my brother and quickly moved on to kids, spouses, houses and cars.

It was a good lunch and conversation with friends.

The Red Sox are now three and a half games ahead of the Yankees and I am a happy guy.

Hopefully tonight the Orioles beat the Yankees and the Red Sox beat the Rangers. That will give the Red Sox a four and a half game lead.

I like when they have a nice lead.

They are in first place.

The Red Sox are currently in first place by two and a half games. They beat the Rangers last night and hopefully they beat them again tonight because the Yankees are playing the Orioles tonight and the Orioles suck.

I was kind of hoping the Orioles were going to go on a winning streak and take two of their four games against the Yankees. They took the first game but lost the second. They have two more games to hopefully knock the Yankees down another notch.

I would love to see the Red Sox go into the break with a three or four game lead.

I coached soccer

Years ago, I had the privilege of coaching various soccer teams over a period of about 6 years. The age groups ranged from 6 years to 14 years old.

Trust me when I say that when you take 15 little kids and put them together, they get kinda crazy.

During all those years, I can say without any hesitation that I never once said to myself, "Hey! Here's a good idea! Let's take these 15 hyperactive nutcases with little or no self-control and walk them into a deep cave during the rainy season!"

What was that guy thinking....

The Yankees lost game one of their double header against the Orioles. This means they are now two and a half games behind the Red Sox.

If the Orioles can keep this "winning streak" alive and take game two of the double-header, that will be a good thing.

If the Red Sox win tonight, that will be a great thing.

I'm going to watch some baseball and fall asleep.

I'm tired.

Yesterday kind of burned me out and today I'm tired.

I don't think anyone thinks about the stresses the death of a loved one puts on you. Everyone handles that stress differently and in my case, I kind of steal myself against it and then deal with the exhaustion that causes for a few days.

Well, that and the fact I spent a few hours in the hot sun talking to people and now I have a slight sunburn.

Sunburns tend to make me tired.

The Red Sox have been winning lately and they just completed a sweep of the Royals. They have a two game lead over the Yankees in the ALEast and there is only one week before we reach the All Star break.

I'm hoping they can maintain or increase that lead before they go into the break and everyone gets some much-needed rest. Once the break is over, every team in the league will be looking to knock the Red Sox off their pedestal.

That's a pretty good position to be in.

And then there were five

I was the second child. My older sister died 6 hours after she was born so when I arrived, I was, by default, the oldest child.

Five more followed me, six if you want to count the youngest that my mom lost before birth. But in the end, we were a family of eight - mom, dad and their six kids.

The house was always crowded and we had a constant stream of activity. How my parents did it, I'll never know but they did do it and despite our collective touch of insanity, they managed to get us all to adult hood with only a few major incidents.

I was the first to leave the home and my relationship with my younger siblings lessened as I made my own family but it was still a relationship and we always got together at the appropriate times. After dad died, mom became the glue that held us all together.

Eventually the rest of us, save one, made their way out of the nest and into the world. The one who remained kept telling us, "I'm never gonna leave mom. I'm going to stay right here and take care of her!"

And stay he did. He took care of the house and mom took care of him.

Eventually he decided that living with mom was hampering his lifestyle so he moved out but not far away and he remained close to mom.

When mom was diagnosed with a disease that would slowly pick away at her brain and her body and it became obvious that she could no longer maintain her home, we moved her out of the house and into a place that was more conducive to her needs. As the disease progressed and she required more care, me brother stepped up to the plate and basically moved back in with her to take care of her, becoming her primary care giver.

When mom passed, he moved back to his apartment where he spent his winters. In the summers, he spent as much time as he could at our sisters lake house where he taught his nephews and nieces how to fish, drive his boat and basically live a happy life.

He had his demons but now those demons are behind him. He is once again with mom and they are taking care of each other. Dad is with them and I can imagine my brother and my dad are in a heated discussion about who is the better football team, the Giants or the Patriots. (Dad grew up a Giants fan, my brother grew up a Patriots fan)

We are now numerically "five", but we will always be six. That is how we lived, it is how we were raised and I see no reason to change that now.

I'm burned out so no links today. I'm going to put the ball game on and fall asleep in front of my TV.

Catch you all tomorrow.

Time to shut them down

It is currently 77° and the humidity down to 49%. We have shut down all the ACs and opened the windows.

I can live with that.

The Red Sox are in Missouri to play the Royals and since Missouri is in the central time zone, the game won't be on until 8:00 tonight.

The Royals have been playing some pretty bad baseball lately so I'm hoping they don't suddenly pick the next three days to break their slump. It would be nice if the Red Sox took all three games and left Kansas City with a nice two or three game lead of the Yankees.

Do I think that's going to happen?

No.

The Yankees are playing the Blue Jays and they will probably win those games.

I'm going to digest my burgers and watch bad television while waiting for the temp to drop.

I hope you all had a great Independence Day.

Remember, us Massachusetts folk are too stupid to know how to use fireworks. The intelligent and smart people of New Hampshire and Connecticut are the only ones smart enough to use fireworks so don't go lighting any sparklers or anything.

For that matter, if you live in Massachusetts, you should just stay away from matches all together because you obviously don't know how to handle fire.

The Red Sox have been playing well lately (they completed the sweep of the Nationals today) and they are currently in first place by a game and a half. If the Yankees win (they are currently up 5-1 over the Braves), the Red Sox will maintain a one game lead. If the Yankees lose, the Red Sox will take a two game lead.

Hopefully they lose.

It would be nice for the Red Sox to have a multi game lead in the ALEast.

They got some payback

The Red Sox trounced the Yankees last night by beating them 11-0.

Let me type that score for you again: Eleven to Nothing

That means the Red Sox are once again in first place and the worst that can happen this evening is they end the series tied for first. Well, that and the fact that ESPN is carrying the game and those announcers suck more than the FOX announcers do.

Alex Rodriguez and Matt Vasgersian will spend the entire broadcast trying to get into Jessica Mendoza's pants by laughing out loud at her bad jokes and commenting on everything she says, even when she is wrong.

Then Rodriguez will climb into the stands and point out all the celebrities that are near him, like his current girlfriend or wife or whatever, while tossing the baseball around with some outfielder who really doesn't want to have anything to do with him but is probably being paid a lot of money by ESPN to be nice to him.

Time for a quick check on the blog statistics.

This shows one week's worth of activity:
Looks like Firefox is the dominate browser and Windows is still the dominate operating system. I'm very glad to see that neither "Edge" nor Internet Explorer is represented. That means all of my readers are intelligent people.

I'm still trying to figure out where the "Unix" users come from. That's a pretty expensive operating system usually used by businesses. Normal people don't use Unix.

Since ESPN is carrying the game, it won't start until 8:00. That means I probably won't be awake long enough to watch more than a few innings.
