And thus ends 2016

Merry New Years!

🎈

As is our tradition here at The Daily News© World Headquarters, we ordered a bunch of Chinese food and we are currently feeling a little bloated.

But that's not what I came here to tell you.

I came here to tell you that I'm taking tonight off.

Did you all survive the blizzard?

After all the hype about the storm, we end up with about 1/4 inch of crusty snow-like stuff.

Thank goodness we had plenty of bread, milk and batteries on hand....

Is it just me or does anyone else think Obama is a spoiled brat?

He spent the first five years of his presidency blaming every problem he ran into on George Bush.

Then, after more than a few people pointed out that he had been in office for more than four years and he should have been able to fix all of those so-called problems, he stopped blaming Bush and started blaming Boehner for everything.

Then, after Boehner stepped down, he started blaming Russia and Israel for the fact that his "arab spring" is a terrorist's wet dream.

Now he's blaming the media and the Clintons for the fact that we're gonna have Donald Trump as President.

At what point does this guy take responsibility for his own actions as well as his administration and its insane policies?

Say what you want about George Bush, you've got to admit he kept his mouth shut over the last eight years and never once said anything negative about Obama.

While Obama was bad-mouthing everything Bush did during his eight years in office, Bush was sitting in his house painting pictures, going to airports to greet arriving troops and just being a generally classy guy. In my mind, both he and his wife Laura were far more civil, polite, kind and generous than the Obama's will ever be.

I have removed Christmas from our front yard

I made the mistake of watching the news this morning and I was told repeatedly by the weather dweebs that we were about to witness an apocalypse-like blizzard of biblical proportions. It was going to be so bad that they said I could die just by watching the news.

So I did the first thing that came to mind when the weather dweebs tell you that you're going to die because of the weather - I went out and took down all of our Christmas decorations. My wife then wrapped, bagged, bundled and finally boxed them so that next year we'll be able to use them again.

If I was tasked with actually putting them away, you can bet they would be a tangled mass and the lights probably wouldn't be working when we took them out next year.

Here are a few links that don't contain any reference to the massive blizzard we are experiencing:

And now it's done.

My family came over this evening to continue the Christmas celebration. Everyone seemed to have a good time and, at least on my part, ate too much.

Hey, that's what you're supposed to do this time of the year - have a good time and eat too much.

Prior to the festivities this evening, I managed to locate a few links for you to look at:

Christmas is not over yet.

Tomorrow marks the traditional end of my Christmas when my family all gets together and has a generally good time.

Last year was a little tough without Mom and she will be missed again this year but we will still have a good time.

The Buffalo Bills fired Rex "Help! I'm talking and I can't shut up!" Ryan today.

He'll still probably get the remaining $12 million on his contract so it doesn't really suck to be him but at least we won't have to listen to his bullshit press conferences every time his team plays the Patriots.

Ryan has always had a problem with Bill Belichick and when he was the coach of the Jets, he tried to start a "rivalry" between the Patriots and the Jets. Much to his chagrin, the Patriots didn't really bite and his alleged rivalry never took hold. I think it really irked him that the Patriots always said things like, "They're a tough team and they play hard. We'll have to be at the top of our game when we face them."

When he went to the Bills, he once again had some not nice things to say and once again the Patriots didn't bite.

Not sure what to do today

I'm in the post-Christmas doldrums where there is almost no activity in my world.

I did manage to set up and configure my Wink hub which is the first step in my evil plan for world domination. Or at least my plan for remote control of my house.

Now that I have the hub and one light configured, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to go for the thermostat, some light switches and sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads.

Rah-Gee-Lay - It must be Italian!

At 8:00 tonight, TBS and TNT began what is fondly known as the "A Christmas Story Marathon!" and I will watch it as many times as I can.

I can't get enough of The Skut Farkas Incident...

🎄

We noticed you are running an ad blocker....

I get that message on a lot of web pages I visit and they keep asking me to disable it.

Attention web administrators everywhere: I'll make you a deal. If you use only unobtrusive ads that don't prevent me from seeing the content I came to see, I'll disable my ad blocker. Deal?

No, you won't do that?

I didn't think so.

The reason people run ad blockers is not because of ads on web sites. None of us want to pay for content just like we don't want to pay for television so we are willing to accept ads on web sites as long as those ads don't become the primary content. When you decided to make the ad the primary content, we decided to block the ad.

At some point in the past, a computer language was created for web browsers that allowed web admins a lot of flexibility in how their content was displayed. They could write small programs (now called applets) that would do things when the page was displayed. No longer were they limited to different color text or flashing letters to get your attention. No longer were they limited to static images or data-heavy videos to visually stimulate your wallet.

No sir, they could now do all kinds of "stuff" with video, sound and various other active content. And "stuff" they did.

Initially they popped open  a new browser window and displayed some gaudy, awful ad for cheap car insurance or low mortgage rates. When that happened, people found a way to prevent those pop-ups from covering their screen with really bad porn-like GoDaddy advertisements or just really bad porn.

So the ad boys needed to do something new.

That something new is a small java applet that displays a semi-opaque video or image over the web page you are trying to see that advertises some bizarre product that you have no desire to buy. And they usually have some timer that prevent you from moving on until a certain amount of time has passed.

Imagine if you put on the morning news, watched a few minutes of it and while the talking head was still telling you about the tornado that was coming your way, an ad for Dave's Soda and Pet Food City suddenly covered the screen and stayed there for 30 seconds.

You would be pissed and you would do anything you could to stop that from happening in the future.

Enter the ad blocker.

I love my ad blocker. It blocks almost every ad imaginable, including the ones that prevent you from seeing what you want to see.

So to web admins everywhere, if you want us to turn off our ad blockers, you need to turn off the ads that prevent us from reading the content we came to see. In other words, stop making the ad the content.

Television news vs Reality

Attention news media: The 50s called and they want their lifestyle back.

I was watching the news this morning and there was a lengthy segment on the rash of package thefts. You know the drill - UPS or FedEx delivers a package when no one is home, leaves it on the front porch and some scumbag walks up an hour later and steals the package.

The talking head ended his in-depth, cutting-edge, breaking-news story by giving us his "things you can do" tips to prevent the theft of packages.

The first thing he said was, "Schedule deliveries when you are home."

What?

Do these people have any idea how modern delivery companies work? Do they think we are still living in the 1950s when deliveries are made by small trucking companies who you could call and say, "Hey Eugene, we'll be home at 4:00. Bring the stuff over then, okay?"

The US Post Office, FedEx and UPS deliver packages on their schedule, not yours. There is no scheduling them.

🕎

I haven't brought up the Red Sox lately and for that I apologize. I know you get the majority of your Red Sox news from us here at The Daily News© and we have been remiss in our duties to keep you informed. Senior management is aware and people will be fired.

Clay Buchholz is no longer a member of the Red Sox and in my humble opinion, this is probably best for both Buchholz and the Red Sox. It was time for him to take his talents to a new venue and it was time for the Red Sox to get someone else on their roster who wasn't going to miss half the season because of some mental issue or an unknown injury.

They have added Chris Sale to the roster and while I'm taking a "once burned, twice shy" attitude about this, I have hopes he will perform well in the Boston market. He is somewhat of a nutcase which means he probably won't be easily insulted by the Boston media or the southie bullshit attitude that seems to be prevalent in Fenway.

The "once burned" thing is my reference to David Price, John Lackey and Rick Porcello. All three of those guys had crappy first seasons with the Red Sox. In the case of Porcello, he turned it around in his second season and in the case of Lackey, he turned it around after some surgery. I'm still waiting on Price....

Hopefully Sale shows up in full blown MVP mode and he is unbeatable in his first season but I'm gonna remain a little skeptical until at least late May or early June.

🎄

If you are interested, here is the radar track of my checkride from last Tuesday.
A pretty good chunk of it is missing (that dashed line over Millers Falls) because I had to do a series of different types of landings and takeoffs at Turners Falls Airport. There are lots of hills around Turners that prevent the radar from detecting the aircraft and recording its location.

The initial stretch you see going from Northampton in a north-west direction is the first leg of the cross country trip he had me plan. If you continue along that path for another 3 hours, you will eventually come to Oswego, NY. Fortunately for me, we broke off the cross country when we reach my first waypoint which was the 0° radial of the VOR in Chester, MA

From there, we worked our way north while he had me do all kinds of interesting things until he was satisfied that I knew what I was doing. Then it was over to Turners to do the landings and finally back to Northampton where I was told I was now a private pilot.

It's a Christmas Miracle!

I was wrapping Christmas presents yesterday when I discovered a freakin' Christmas Miracle! Some of the wrapping paper I was using had a grid of lines on the back that made cutting it in a straight line a hell of a lot easier than eyeballing it!

I thought that was the best thing I'd ever seen and I exclaimed to my daughter that this was great. She kind of indicated to me that maybe I was a little out of touch because she knew all about the wrapping paper grid lines.

Why was I not made aware of this modern miracle of science earlier in my life? Why is it that no one told me about this and you all allowed me to continue along in ignorance, buying un-gridded wrapping paper and having crooked edges on all my presents?

🎄

In keeping with the holiday season, we here at The Daily News© will be using the Christmas Tree and the Menorah as our paragraph separator until after January 1st.

Yes, I know Hanukkah doesn't start until December 24th and I know Christmas is on December 25th but what the hell, if Sears and Target and Walmart and Macy's and every other store on the planet can start playing Christmas carols and displaying Christmas trees sometimes around November 1st, I can start using the symbols on December 22nd.

No, I have not suddenly found religion. I found the page on this website that lets me use symbols and tiny pictures and I'm gonna use them, dammit.

Quick year in review thing

I know it's still 9 days until the end of the year but I figure not a lot is going to happen between now and then. I feel pretty safe doing a quick year in review today.

This past year has been an interesting year for me.

In no particular order, here are some of my "events":
My daughter started her new educational venture at Iowa State University - College of Veterinarian Medicine. I anticipate that in four years, I will no longer have any vet bills. Until then, I will have airfare bills up the wahzoo....

My youngest son graduated from Keene State College and the college immediately offered him a job. He quickly accepted the job and almost immediately discovered that adulthood is way better than childhood. I'm sure tht will wear off but right now, he seems pretty damned happy to be 22 years old, gainfully employed and living large in a nice apartment in Keene, NH

My eldest son and his wife settled into their new home and he just recently got to use his new snowblower. This, in his own words, made him feel manly and very adult-like. I informed him that his snowblower in no way compares to The Beast. Then I grunted at him like Tim Allen.

With the help of my cousin, I achieved one of my life-long goals by learning to fly and getting my private pilots license. If you see a small aircraft passing overhead, look up and wave - it might be me. And even if it's not me, you can imagine it is and wave.

I lost my job of 30+ years and quickly discovered how much better I felt not being there. Turns out that place was killing me slowly and now I feel like a kid again... ...if I was a old bald kid with a beer gut and knees that crack when I move.

Since I was no longer spending 10-12 hours a day in a stress-filled environment, I was able to lose more than 20 pounds without even really trying. Imagine what I could do if I tried. I'd be one of those skinny old guys you see riding around on one of those giant tricycles.

I discovered that I could remove three bolts from a section of my back fence, swing that small section of fence out of the way and use my lawn tractor to mow my back yard. This was after spending the last four years using my push mower back there because my 48" lawn tractor wouldn't fit through the 46" gate.
All-in-all, not a bad year. Other than being unemployed for most of it, which kind of sucks, I've got no complaints.

I hope all of you had an equally good 2016.

I was in a Walmart in Palmer today and there was a Monson cop wandering around doing some grocery shopping. He was in full uniform but he was obviously in full husband mode, staring a shopping list that his wife had probably put together for him, trying to decipher those items that made no sense to him.

The thing is, people kept staring at him and avoiding him like he was going to lock them up if they blocked his view of the instant pudding or something.

Trust me folks, he's not going to lock you up. As a matter of fact, he's more likely to help you load your groceries into your car than he is to go all One Adam 12 one you.

Lighten up people.

Time to brag

Guess who is a licensed pilot
This guy!

Well, actually, both those guys are private pilots but one of them is also a FAA Designated Examiner. I'm the one that is not a FAA Designated Examiner.

Man, the last four or five days has been hectic, stressful and exhausting.

On Friday, I got up at 4:30 in the morning and took my wife to the airport where she flew to Iowa. Then I went to Northampton where my instructor and I flew for 2+ hours. He beat me up pretty good with all kinds of interesting maneuvers and attitudes.

I spent Saturday and Sunday not only studying my ass off for my flight exam, but I also spent them worrying about my wife and daughter as they drove from Iowa to here through some pretty crappy weather. It got particularly nasty near Sandusky, OH where they ran into iced-over roads and snow.

On Monday, I spent another 2+ hours flying with my instructor where once again, he beat me up with lots of maneuvers.

Today I met with the FAA Designated Examiner and for 2 hours, he grilled me on my knowledge about sectionals, weather, weight and balance, etc... Then we got into a plane and he had me fly for 2 hours, performing all the maneuvers my instructor had me perform.

Then, when all was said and done, he told me I passed and that I was now a licensed pilot.

Trust me, that merited a large sigh of relief.

I think I might get a good nights sleep tonight.

As promised, no post today.

I flew for three hours this afternoon and then came home and studied my butt off.

And believe me, I could stand to take some of my butt off.  If I can lose another 20 pounds, I'd be a happy guy.

As far as postings go, we'll see what tomorrow brings.

No post today

I spent the day studying for my upcoming examination and for the record, tomorrow is probably going to be post-free as well.

Also for the record, my wife and daughter have arrived safely at home after completing their two day drive from Iowa.

It's nice to have them home.

It's a winter wonderland

We got about 7 or 8 inches of snow today which is a good thing because we can use the water around here. Once the snow ended, I dragged The Beast out and cleared my driveway.

After that, it was study, study, study.

I talked to the FAA examiner today and he gave me my cross-country assignment. Seems he wants to go to Oswego County Airport in upstate New York, on the shores of Lake Ontario.

I'll plan the trip the day before my examine so I have the latest weather but I want to mock plan it out this weekend so I can show my instructor what I have and get his feedback. He'll be able to tell me if I screwed up and help me fix it.

I've been told that the examiner doesn't really want to go on a cross country flight, he just wants to make sure I can plan one. We'll probably go to the first or second checkpoint and then he'll have me head over to Westfield or Turners Falls and show him some things.

I'm probably going to fall asleep early.

While I do that, here are some links for you to enjoy:

Two hours in the air.

I flew for two hours this afternoon and I gotta say, today went a lot better than last Tuesday.

We did the same maneuvers but they came a lot easier today. There is one maneuver that I'm still having trouble with and that's called "unusual attitude". This is done while practicing instrument flying.

Instrument flying involves me, the pilot, wearing a hood that prevents me from seeing anything other than the dashboard and the electronics. The instructor gives me a task and I perform it using only the instruments. Trust me when I say this is a little disconcerting because you have to have complete faith in those instruments.

Then, after performing all of the required maneuvers, my instructor takes control of the plane, tells me to look down and close me eyes. Then he puts the plane into a very unusual attitude. This might be a steep climb with low power and a steep turn. Or it might be a step dive with high power. In other words, it's something that you wouldn't do normally.

Then he says, "Okay, look up and take the plane!" That is when I look up at the instruments, determine what is "unusual" and correct it as quickly as possible and in a particular order.

The order is:
First, fix the airspeed because a lack of speed will cause a stall that might be unrecoverable.

Next, fix the vertical axis because a steep climb will eventually cause a lack of airspeed, resulting in the same stall. A steep dive will eventually result in a high-speed airframe failure

Finally, fix the horizontal axis because a steep bank may lead to a spin that is usually recoverable.
It's the process of recovering from those unusual attitudes that I want to get better at. Everything else seems to be going pretty well.

So now I'm going to study while you click on these:

Thursday, December 15, 2016

No flying today

My instructor called me this morning and we both agreed that doing steep turns and stalls in 40 knot wind gusts was a bad idea. We decided to postpone today's scheduled lesson.

Maybe things will settle down tomorrow or over the weekend and we can give it a shot then.

Why is it that when a government official comes up with an idea that might save thousands and thousands of dollars, someone comes along and makes bullshit accusations.

Chris Christie is not the cause of the decline of print newspapers, the internet is the cause of the decline in print newspapers. No one buys the paper anymore because there are a great many other sources of news. Not only that, it's becoming incredibly clear that most newspapers are terribly biased and manipulate the news to suit their particular goals.

If the newspaper industry would like to survive, they should start writing news stories and stop writing op-ed pieces.

More Christmas shopping

Today I completed my FAA application for my private pilots license. All that needs to happen now is my instructor has to approve it and it will be made available to the examiner. After my checkride, the examiner will either approve it or reject.

I'm really hoping for the approval thing.

I made my dreaded trip to the Holyoke Mall today.

That place is a zoo at this time of the year but I gotta admit that going today was a lot better than going there on a Saturday or a Sunday.

I feel like I took a beating.

I flew for 2 solid hours this afternoon in preparation for my upcoming checkride and my instructor beat the hell out of me. He had me doing stalls, steep bank turns, engine-out landings and steep emergency descents.

When I got out of the plane I was sweating.

Oh, and during the post-lesson debrief, my instructor informed me that I need a lot more work so my next flight should be a real charmer.

As for right now, I'm going to continue studying in the hopes that I might actually pass this thing.

The Patriots beat the Ravens last night. That puts them in first place in the AFC and tied for first place in the NFL.

Now I'll put on my best Belichik imitation and say, they're on to Denver where I'm kind hoping that Cyrus Jones is siting on the bench trying to learn how to not screw up a punt return.

Guess who started his Christmas shopping before December 23rd.

I managed to buy several Christmas presents today. I have never gone Christmas shopping before December 23rd before and I gotta admit, it was a hell of a lot less crowded than I'm used to.

Maybe I'll do it again next year...

Still studying..

Errands and studying

We got the grocery shopping done this morning and then I settled in to study while my wife decorated the house for Christmas.

It's what she does.

I will admit to being a little nervous about my upcoming checkride.

I started this venture back in March and so far, I've invested a lot of money, time & effort. Now it all comes down to this one conversation & flight with one FAA examiner and I'm pretty damned nervous.

Both my flight instructor and my cousin keep telling me that failure is not an option so I guess I better keep studying.

Party for John

The Tap Room had a "end of shift" party for John today and I went for a bit.

That's a picture of some folks that John has worked with over the years. Mark, the guy on the right side, asked me to make it clear he was not picking his nose.

Mark was not picking his nose.

So anyways, I spent quite a bit of my day studying the FAA regulations and then I went out and had a few adult beverages. That means I'm done with this and ready to call it a night.

I am once again in deep study mode

I will be taking my practical exam and checkride with the FAA soon so my instructor has me studying.

A lot.

Specifically, the possible risks I may run across while flying and what to do to mitigate those risks.

Personally, I'm planning on flying only on risk-free days.

How's that for risk mitigation?

As a child, I had two hero's.

The first was my dad who I looked up to and wanted to be like. He was strong, funny and a genuinely good dad.

The other was John Glenn who was a Marine, a pilot, an astronaut and a genuinely nice guy. Every kid I knew wanted to be John Glenn.

Our world lost a hell of man today.

Godspeed John Glenn.

It's nice having a car.

Limited posting today because not only did I get my car back and I was able to run some errands, I also did an hour of ground training and an hour of flying this afternoon.

It was a beautiful day to fly. The high cloud blocked the sun so there were no thermals. It was smooth as silk at 3,500 feet and I enjoyed watching the world go by down below.

I didn't spend a lot of time looking for links.

Not having a car sucks

My car spent the day in the shop having a lot of stuff done to it. I guess when you get to be 11 years old (that's almost 100 in car years), all sorts of things need to be lifted, tucked, replaced and aligned. This means I spent my day without a car.

It's not that I had any place in particular that I needed to be or wanted to go, it's just the idea of being without a car that kind of sucks. We are all addicted to our ability to jump in a car and go where we want, when we want, and when that is suddenly not a thing you can do, it kinda sucks.

So anyways, me and The Dog spent the day doing little odd jobs around the house and napping.

Well, I spent the day doing odd jobs. He spent the day napping.

He's very good at napping. It's a skill he's honed to a fine edge over the last several years.

Quiet Sunday

The Patriots managed to beat the Rams 26-10 without Rob Gronkowski. Seems that Gronkowski is out for the remainder of the season after his back surgery.

Hopefully things go well with his rehab and he returns next fall in good playing shape.

I'm still trying to figure out what to get my wife for Christmas.

If anyone has any good ideas, let me know.

Looks like our president-elect has pissed-off the Chinese a little bit.

He took a congratulatory phone call from the president of Taiwan, a country that China claims is nothing more than a break-away state. Sorta like if Hawaii decided to leave the United States and Canada recognized them as a sovereign nation.

So anyways, Mr Trump probably needs to learn how to keep things like that quiet because I'm thinking the last thing we need is a dust-up with the Chinese.

Time for some twisted logic

I got into a discussion today with someone who is more than a little bit liberal. It started when she asked what I thought about what was going on at Hampshire College. I told her that while I hate those people, they have every right to do what they want.

She asked why I hated them.

I told her I hate them because they are arrogant, self-centered hypocrites of the highest order.

These are people who stand on the Constitution and shout about their first amendment right to burn the flag & express their beliefs but then turn around and scream about how the framers of the Constitution did not foresee high-powered assault rifles, call gun owners "gun-nuts", claim that "guns kill people" when you know as well as I do that people kill people.

In my humble opinion, all you gun-nuts out there should be standing right next to the flag-burning assholes and defending their rights to do that. And you manbun-wearin' flag burning shitheads should protest whenever someone tries to pass laws that restrict someone's right to own a  firearm.

You have just as much right to burn the flag as you do to own a gun and you should defend those rights no matter who you are.

And while I'm on the subject of teh Constitution, the next person that says, "We need God back in our country" is gonna get slapped with a Tora and a Q'uran.

I'll keep my guns out of your face as long as you keep your religion out of my government.

Listen up folks, the Constitution is not some off-the-cuff high-school term paper written by a couple of boneheads trying to pass a civics course. It is a well thought-out document that was created over a period of years. The folks that wrote it spent a good many hours debating every word and crafting it so that it was clear and concise.

When the framers were done with it, they sent it to the states and let them debate it. That was where the first ten amendments came from.

The argument, "The framers of the constitution were talking about muzzle-loading single-shot guns!" is invalid. They were pretty bright guys who understood that mankind would improve upon almost everything in existence, including guns. They might not have predicted rapid-fire weapons but they understood that something like that was possible.

They used the words "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Infringe is a word that means,"act so as to limit or undermine".

What they were saying is that the government shall not place limits on the right of a person to own and use firearms. No limits. Period. End-of-discussion.

They knew that things would change and they wanted to make it clear that there was no limit on what they were saying.

If they wanted to give the government the ability to restrict things, they would have said, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall be allowed" and we would all be allowed to own a muzzle-loader.

When it comes to the first amendment, they used the words, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech..."

Abridge is a word that means, "Curtail, reduce in extent or quantity; impose a restriction on."

What they were saying when they wrote that is that while it might be unpopular or nasty, the government cannot restrict what can be said.

Trust me, there were a lot of people saying a lot of awful things back when the Constitution was written. Anyone who thinks the residents of Boston or Philadelphia or New York were any different now than they were back then is living in a dream world.

What I'm saying is that you cannot have one right and give up others. You cannot pick-and-choose what rights we get to exercise. You cannot claim the first amendment protects your right to burn the flag but the second amendment doesn't protect the members of the NRA. The minute you begin to do that, we might as well toss the whole thing and start over again.

We either get all the rights outlined in the Constitution and its ratified amendments or we get none.

And by the way, if someone says we get none, me and 30,000,000 of my fellow gun owners are gonna have a problem with that.

Now that I've made it clear that we are the luckiest people on the planet to be born into a country that has a document like the Constitution to frame its government, let's go look at some links:

Bad day to fly

I was hoping to get an hour of instrument instruction in today but the weather prevented that from happening. My instructor didn't think flying in 23 knot gusts while under a hood was a good idea. I agree with him.

Perhaps tomorrow will be different because I'd like to get these last few hours done before Christmas.

I always see actors and musicians standing in front cameras telling me that I should send money to their current favorite charity. They put on their best sad face and plead with us to send just a little money while behind them, a screen shows the horrific conditions that their charity d'jour is experiencing.

I hate those people when they do that.

I know that there are shitheads in this world that abuse animals but I turn the volume down on the TV when I hear Sarah McLachlan start singing In The Arms Of An Angel.

I know there are children living in shitty conditions in countries that aren't the United States but I flip the channel when I hear that soft spoken guy come on the TV and start telling me about how little Juan has to walk five miles to get some dirty drinking water.

Why do I do that? Because those actors can't be bothered to spend a dime of their own money to help that cause and as a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised to learn they were paid to make that commercial.

But then, every once in a while, someone famous does something meaningful without a lot of fanfare or recognition and my faith in humanity is restored.

Along comes someone famous like Dolly Parton and I feel like maybe not every famous person is an asshole.

Meeting night

I spent most of the day taking care of thigns around the house and then I was in a meeting with a bunch of folks that used to work at my previous employer.

We get together every few weeks to help each other find new employment and commiserate about our current state of affairs.

What that all means is that I had no time for a post today.

Perhaps tomorrow....

I guess I picked the right night to fly

Yesterday was a far better day to fly than today turned out to be. And it's not looking any better for the rest of the week.

Speaking of flying, here's a screen capture of the record of last nights flight:
It looks like I was flying a nice straight line doesn't it?

I will tell you that the path I flew wasn't quite that straight.

The air traffic control system only "sees" the plane once every few seconds. Hell, sometimes it doesn't see the plane for almost a full minute if there is interference. This means that the system actually extrapolates the position the plane was in for those times it didn't see it. What you are seeing is a refinement of the actual path.

I made the flight back "under the hood" which means I flew using only the instruments because the hood blocked my few out of the windows.

It was the third time I've flown using only instruments and I gotta tell you, it's kind of taxing. Imagine driving a car only looking at a compass, the speedometer & a map and you get an idea of what it's like.

Fortunately the aircraft all have GPS in them so I get to look at that but the GPS doesn't tell me if my wings are level or if I'm climbing/descending. I have to study the gauges to determine that.

Staring at gauges is no fun but it's a skill I need to acquire. Clouds are funny little things that pop up on their schedule and if I end up in one, I'd like to know how to keep my aircraft straight and level.

Short post

This evening I completed my night cross country requirements when I flew from Northampton to Groton, CT and back again.

We left at 5:30 and I was back in my house by 9:00 which is a good thing because anything later than that is past my bedtime.

The flight down was smooth as glass and the good folks at Bradley TraCon watched me all the way. They only had to contact me once for a traffic notice and I was able to find the other aircraft pretty quickly.

I landed in Groton and then took right off for the return to Northampton.

The flight back was just as smooth and Bradley TraCon called Westover and got me cleared through their airspace during my descent into Northampton.

I landed back at Northampton around 7:30 or so, cleaned up the aircraft, tied it down and filled out the logs. Then I jumped in my car and headed for home.

Now that I'm home, I'm going to bed.

I'll try to have extra links for you tomorrow.

The administration at Hampshire College kinda stepped in some shit

In an effort to appease their customers (the students), the administration at Hampshire College decided to remove the American flag from the college flag poles around the campus.

They did not ban the American flag but they did make the decision to stop flying it as an institution.

This, of course, became national news and it's pretty much fired up everyone for miles around and now there are large groups of people waving American flags in the faces of every Hampshire College student they can find.

I'm not sure if the flag waving is being done on the campus or just around it but either way, I think they are making their point.

The kids at Hampshire are known to be spoiled rich brats who major in things like "women in the arts" or "literature and its negative impact on native-americans". In other words, nothing that they can ever use to become productive members of our society.

I am under the impression that those kids have no idea how to handle the sudden onslaught of pissed-off adults but, in their defense, it's the college administration that should be the target of the protesters, not the students.

It was the president that decided to take down the flag. The protesters should be waving their flags in the face of the administration.

Put traffic cones and a sign that reads "Road Closed" in front of the presidents driveway, pour water-based red, white and blue paint on the provosts car. Do something to them.

Take a cue from the black lives matter people: block 116 with a bunch of people chained to concrete blocks so the administrators can't get to the Starbucks and the students can't get to the Moan and Dove for the $18.00 beers.

That'll get their attention.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's time for the deployment of the Christmas decorations.

Safe and sound in Iowa

My daughter and her little dog are once again safe and sound in Iowa.

The trip back to Iowa was much better than their trip here because the dog got to sit in the cabin with my daughter instead of in cargo. From Bradley to O'Hare, the dog sat in my daughters lap but from O'Hare to Des Moines, they each had their own seat on the almost empty aircraft.

So anyways, in 20 days, my wife will fly out there and together, they will all drive back here for a month of holidays.

In the meantime, my dog is once again lonely and slightly confused. about the whereabouts of his companion.

When they say that this is the busiest time of the year for travel, they aren't kidding.

We got to the airport at 5:00 this morning and this is what greeted us at security:

There were a lot of cranky people there.

Since I've been awake since 3:30 this morning, I'm going to fall asleep on my couch while watching bad television.

I'm a little fatter than I was two days ago.

Man, I ate a lot of food yesterday and it was good food.

I think it might have been the two desserts that pushed me over the edge but I just couldn't pass on either one!

At least one radio station in the area that has started playing only Christmas music. They do this every year starting on Thanksgiving and ending God only knows when because no one listens to them.

Let's face it, you can only listen to Johnny Mathis sing Winter Wonderland so many times before you start to lose your mind.

I hope everyone had a thankful day.

Thanksgiving is, for the most part, a nice relaxing day for me. My wife, however, works her butt off getting everything ready.

In my defense, I do the dishes afterwards but that task is way easier than all the prep work. I guess it's my lot in life to be the slacker on Thanksgiving.

I think I'll go take a nap now.

We had all three siblings and spouse with us today. Along with my mother-in-law, that made for a full house.

The dogs got more attention today than they get for an entire month.

Yes, I did my leaves

More importantly, the guy that lives across the street, and upwind, did his as well. This means I will no longer have all of his leaves blowing across the street into my yard.

It's the little things in life that make me smile.

As is always the case at this time of the year, I've asked Pat, The Amazing Shopper Man, to go on a quest for me.

And, as is always the case, I expect that in the next few days, Pat will find me what I am looking for. I will first go buy the object of my desire and then I will meet up with Pat and buy him adult beverages.

You may have noticed that the little paragraph breaks I use are changing.

In the original Daily News©, I used a tilde ~ to separate the paragraphs.

Then, when I changed over this format, I started using asterisks * to separate the paragraphs.

After a while, I got bored with the asterisks and decided to use bullets • but since there is no keystroke for that, I had to code it in html (•). Not a big deal and that lasted for quite a while.

At some point in the last month or so, Blogger added a "Insert special character" button to the page where I write this and I started poking around in there.

At first I used a special character from a suit of cards, the diamond ♦

Then, today, I found a different diamond called the lozenge ⧫

I like the lozenge and I think I'll stick with that one for a while.

I spent a little while poking around the internets today and here are a few links I found for you:

Kinda glad I'm not flying this week.

I told my instructor that I wasn't planning on any flying this week because my daughter was home. Turns out I wouldn't be flying anyways because it's been kinda windy

Flying in gusty winds is no fun

For the record, I have not cleared the leaves off my lawn for the last three days. With the wind, it would have been an effort in futility.

Perhaps I'll do it tomorrow.

Perhaps I won't.

We'll just have to see what the day brings.

He survived.

I have confirmed with my eldest that he was able to install his WiFi light switch without electrocuting himself. That is a good thing.

In other offspring news, thanks to American Airlines, it looks like my daughters little dog will be able to ride in her lap all the way back to Iowa when she returns after Thanksgiving.

American has a policy where the dog can be declared a "comfort animal" which allows her to ride in my daughters lap instead of in the cargo hold. This is a good thing because that little dog was a wreck after spending five hours in the cargo hold of a plane.

Besides, whenever she sits in my daughters lap, she falls sound asleep which is a comfort to not only my daughter but to the dog as well.

As for our youngest, he is working his butt off and loving his job.

And that, really, is a pretty important aspect of any career. I know people that went to work miserable every day and that's a pretty shitty way to spend your life.

Once again, I'm compelled to say that life is good.

Another good day

So the Small Emergency Backup Dog has overcome the stress and anxiety that comes with being put into a crate and flown halfway across the country and she is napping in my lap.

Oh, the Large Main Dog is also napping in my lap.

It's what they do - cut off the circulation in my legs.

My eldest called me today to chat about not electrocuting himself, which is always a good thing to chat about.

He is replacing one of his light switches with a WiFi controlled switch so he can turn his lights on when he's not home. I'd like to do that as well but my light switches are all double-throw switches and I've yet to find a wWiFi controlled double throw switch.

So anyways, after explaining why he should make sure the load wires are either black or red and the difference between a neutral and a ground, he felt competent enough to go ahead and give it a try. I instructed him to text me this evening so I knew he was still vertical and taking nourishment.

As for the two women in my life, one of them spent the morning sleeping and then they both headed out to a craft fair over in West Springfield.

I suspect they will return with some crafty-things and ideas for creating future crafty-things.

It's a good day.

We drove to Bradley Airport this afternoon where we retrieved our daughter & her angelic little dog. Then we drove home where the angelic little dog stepped back into Small Emergency Backup Dog role and reintroduced herself to the Large Main Dog.

He was very glad to see her again and there was frolicking and peeing in the back yard.

As for my daughter, she managed to get no sleep last night thanks to the folks on the first floor of her apartment building. They apparently threw a "Bring Your Own Jackhammer and Dynamite" party. From what I understand, it was a bit loud.

So now my little girl is lounging and watching DVRs with her mom while the dogs are sleeping on the couch next to them.

Life is good.

My lawn remains leaf-free.

Of course, it's leaf-free because this morning, I ran it over with my lawn tractor again!

And as luck would have it, I got a flat tire just as I was pulling it into the garage.

I knew the right front tire was soft but I never got around to filling it. Well, today I must have cut a turn a little to fast and pushed the tire off the rim.

Fortunately, my neighbor has a large air pump/tank and I was able to use that to re-seat the tire on the rim. I also filled all of the tires to full capacity so I hopefully won't have to go through that again.

As I was doing my take-offs and landings in Westfield last night, my instructor commented on
the buses that were sitting on the ramp next to a charter jet. He said, "I bet that's the UMass football team going to BYU. They are gonna get their ass kicked. Again."

Turns out he was right, it was the UMass football team and this morning I learned that they were sitting there because the state police bomb unit was busy searching their plane. Someone had apparently called in a bomb threat.

I sent my instructor a text this morning telling him about the news story and his response was, "I heard. It was probably called in by the UMass coach - he didn't want to go play BYU!"

My instructor is a pretty funny guy.
