Football and Baseball.

The Patriots played the Dolphins at 1:00 and the Red Sox played the Yankees at 3:00.

The Patriots showed up to play today and held the previously undefeated Dolphins to 7points while racking up 38 points of their own. This is a good thing because the Patriots had a 1-2 record in a three-way tie for last place in the AFCEast.

Now they have a 2-2 record and are in second place in the AFCEast.

Second place is way better than last place.

At 3:00, the Red Sox took on the Yankees and managed to beat them handily. The final score was 10-2 so maybe they haven't given up.

Maybe they were just working out some things.

Anyways, they have finished up the 2018 regular season with a new high win record of 108.

Winning 108 games out of 162 is damned good baseball. That's a .666 winning percentage.

Not only is that some damned good baseball, that's also kinda scary to all the catholics out there.

Despite the Red Sox not playing baseball until next Friday, there will be baseball to watch. On Tuesday, the NL Wild Card will be on at 8:00. On Wednesday, the AL Wild Card will be on at 8:00 and on Thursday, the NLDS kicks off.

I'll watch some of those games because I like baseball.

So now that sports are over with, I've got to find something to watch.

They have given up

The Red Sox lost last night and then again this afternoon. It's almost as if they decided to not play these last three games.

Maybe they're saving themselves for the playoffs.

Maybe they're falling apart like last year.

Guess we won't know until October 11th.

They start the playoffs on October 5th against either the Athletics or the Yankees, depending on which one wins the wild card. They have yet to announce the start time for the game but since it's on TBS and they will be carrying two games that day, it's pretty safe to assume the first game will be at 1:00 and the second game will be at 8:00.

I'm hoping the Red Sox are on at 8:00 because if it's on at 1:00, I'll be working and I'll be forced to watch the cartoon guy standing at the plate thing that MLB shows on gameday.

I'm going to go cook some burgers and then watch the season premier of Last Man Standing that I DVRd last night.

The final series of the regular season.

Tonight starts the final series of the regular season as the Yankees come to Boston. These three games have no impact on the Red Sox so my expectations are not high that they will play their best.

Then again, it's the Yankees. That may be enough to light a fire under them.

Fall is starting to make it's appearance:

The stock market is misbehaving again. Seems that Elon Musk may have violated some SEC rules, Facebook got hacked, again, and the head of the Federal Reserve is making some statements about no longer making statements.

These three things combined to make everyone nervous and the market haas no idea if it's up or down. Yesterday it went down and today it's pretty much even.

ll that means is my retirement is holding it's own but there is a better chance it's gonna crash than it's gonna suddenly skyrocket.

Ted Turner announced that he is dealing with Lewy Body. That's the shit that my mom suffered from.

As much as I never really liked Ted Turner, I can say that he has my sympathies.

After watching my mom go through that I can honestly say that I wouldn't wish that crap on my worst enemy.

Currently at 107 wins

The Red Sox beat the crap out of the Orioles this afternoon 19-3 in game one of todays double header. That gives them 107 wins on the season. Tonights game is currently going on and I'm hoping that they have 108 wins when the game ends.

Tomorrow is a day off for them and on Friday they start a three game series against the Yankees in Boston that will end the regular season on Sunday.

I left work a little early today and decided to mow my lawn.

With all the rain and fertilizer, it's growing fast and I figured if I mowed it today, I didn't have to bag it. I may still have to mow it over the weekend but again, I won't have to bag it.

I'm going to watch this baseball game.

They have finally clinched best record

The Red Sox managed to win last night, giving them a record of 106-51. This not only breaks their single-season win record, it gives them the best record in MLB and home field advantage during the playoffs.

I'm not sure that home field advantage is as big a deal as some people make it out to be but it just might give them enough of an edge over the Yankees or Athletics, depending on which one of them wins the wild card.

Speaking of baseball, there will be none tonight. They postponed tonights game until tomorrow when they will play a double-header. First game will be at 1:00pm and the second game will be at 7:00pm.

Since there is no baseball, I'll have to find something else to watch.

While I poke around the channels, you can poke around these:

Stilllllll at 105

Once again, the Red Sox and the Indians went 11 innings and the Red Sox managed to lose to the Indians by one run (4-3 last night).

And the Astros keep winning so that means the Red Sox have not yet secured home field advantage.

The Red Sox are back in Boston tonight to start a three game series against the Orioles, the worst team in Major League Baseball.

I'm hoping the Red Sox win all three of those games....

My replacement phone is finally configured properly.

It had all of the stuff on it that I had on my old phone but none of the password information. That means I had to open every application and enter my ID and password for the facility I was accessing. That means email accounts, bank accounts, pilot stuff, etc...

I think I'm going to wait a few weeks and then delete all of the backups of the old phone.

I have a problem leaving old unnecessary backups of personal data laying around...

Still at 105

I fell asleep and missed the end of last nights game. They were tied 4-4 when I dozed off and I woke up to find the the Indians broke the tie in the 11th inning.

I'm hoping they win tonight because I stand by my prediction of four more wins this season.

One day last week, I awoke to find the my 4 year old iPhone6 was dead.

Dead, dead, dead.

We're talking zero battery and no sign of life whatsoever.

This is weird because my phone has never gone below 60% battery overnight. Hell, it's not doing anything at night so it shouldn't use any battery. I don't have any applications running on it so it shouldn't use any more than 1% battery just keeping the cpu idling and the radios ready to go.

So anyways, I charged it up and it seemed fine.

Almost too fine.

I say that because it stayed at 100% for two days.

My phone has never held 100% of a charge for two days.

I decided to go online and see if this was a problem that was known to the real world and sure as shootin' I found that a lot of people had battery issues on their 4 year old iPhones. As a matter of fact, so many people had problems with the battery in their 4 year old iPhones that Apple was doing a battery replacement for only $29.00

I really like my phone and I figured $29.00 to keep my trusty iPhone6 was a lot better than spending $1,400 on a shiny new iPhone loaded with features I would probably never use.

So today I went to the Apple store and they quickly discovered that my battery was on the verge of exploding. The guy showed me the way the screen was bowing out from the body of the phone because the battery was swelling. I never noticed it because I have a case on my phone that hid the swelling.

I figured for sure this $29.00 battery replacement was going to cost me a lot of money but I was wrong. The guy said, "We'll give you a new iPhone6 and charge you for the battery replacement."

So here I am, with a brand new iPhone6 that looks just like my old iPhone6 without the swelling and I'm a happy guy. More importantly, I no longer have to be concerned about it exploding in my pocket.

Not that I was concerned about it before but once the guy showed me the problem, I realize I probably should have been concerned about it.

They have tied their win record

At 105 wins, the 2018 Red Sox have now tied with the 1912 Red Sox at 105 wins and there are still 8 games left to play - 2 against the Indians, 3 against the Orioles and 3 against the Yankees. That means it is almost guaranteed they will break their season record. The only question is by how much?

My prediction is they will win at least 4 of their remaining 8 games, giving them a record of 109-53.

I'm hoping they win 6 of their remaining 8 games but the Indians and the Yankees may have different opinions. The Orioles have given up and would love nothing more than to play the spoiler but they don't really stand a chance.

I've eaten my dinner and I'm ready to watch the ball game.

Thirty three years

Today my wife and I celebrated our thirty third wedding anniversary.

That's a lot of anniversaries.

The Red Sox managed to finally beat the Yankees and clinch the ALEast.

Now their magic number for Best Record in the AL is two. They are eight and a half games ahead of the Astros and the Astros have ten games left to play.

That means any combination of Red Sox wins and Astros losses that equals two will give the Red Sox the best record in the American League. That means the season will end with the Red Sox having home field advantage.

Home field advantage is a good thing.

Speaking of the red Sox, they are in Cleveland tonight to play a three game series against the Indians. I'm hoping they take at least two of the three.

They got their ass kicked

Once again, Price was unable to pitch against the Yankees and the Red Sox got their ass kicked by the Yankees last night.

Despite his recent successes on the mound, his inability to pitch under duress leads me to have absolutely no faith in him for the upcoming post-season. You can see him mentally collapse the minute someone hits the ball and he never really recovers.

I am not convinced they are going to win the AL if they are planning on using Price in any high-pressure situations.

As for the rest of the team, they seem to be having trouble hitting the baseball. Games are not won by pitchers alone, it takes batters hitting the ball and crossing home plate to win a game. They aren't doing that.

But once again, I'm being a typical Red Sox fan and I'm sitting here expecting them to clinch the ALEast tonight by beating the snot out the Yankees tonight.

Well, the oven is harping at me so I guess my pizza's are done.

Still looking for that win

The Red Sox lost last night so they are still looking to clinch the ALEast.

Price is pitching tonight and he has been on a roll. Unfortunately, the last time he pitched against the Yankees, he got his ass kicked.

I'm really hoping he doesn't have a repeat of that tonight.

I'm going to watch some baseball and you are going to do what ever it is that you want to do.

There will be baseball this evening

The Red Sox and the Yankees were scheduled to play at 1:05 this afternoon but fortunately for all of us working stiffs, the rain pushed the start time back to 7:05 this evening. That means I get to watch tonight's game instead of bad television.

I'm grateful for the rain.

Last Friday, my fertilizer guy applied one of his miracle concoctions to my lawn. Unfortunately, my lawn had decided to grow immediately prior to his application and it was kind of long.

My problem with that is since the lawn was long, I knew I would need to bag it when I mowed it and the last thing I wanted to do was bag all that fertilizer I had just paid for. So I didn't mow my lawn this weekend, hoping instead for the rain they kept predicting for today.

Now that it's rained, I can comfortably bag my lawn because the fertilizer has been soaked into the soil.

I'm grateful for the rain.

I don't think the Patriots came to play

The Patriots managed to look pretty damned bad yesterday and the Jaguars looked pretty damned good. Granted, the temperature in the stadium was just a tad under 100° and the Patriots are a cold weather team but that's not excuse.

There was no excuse for yesterday.

And I'm betting Belichick let them no there was no excuse.

No baseball tonight so I guess I'll watch bad television and fall asleep early.

Yay sports!

Go sport team! Do that thing to score that point!

Today was a sports kind of day for me. Baseball at 1:00 followed by football at 4:20.

The Red Sox won their 103 game today and the Yankees lost. That means the Red Sox are now eleven and a half games ahead of the Yankees. It also mean their magic number to clinch the division is two.
  • If the Red Sox win their next two games, the Red Sox win the division.
  • If the Red Sox win their next game and the Yankees lose their next game, the Red Sox win the division.
  • If the Yankees lose their next two games, the Red Sox win the division.
Since there are twelve games left in the season, I'm pretty sure they are going to win the division.

They're one an off-day tomorrow while they travel all the way to New York City. On Tuesday, they start a three game series against the Yankees and I suspect that is when they will clinch the division. I'm also hoping that the Astros do a little losing so the Red Sox can clinch home field advantage with the best record in the American League.

The Astros are currently nine games behind the Red Sox. Since there are twelve games left, any combination of Red Sox wins and Astro losses that equals four games will give the Red Sox the best record.

As for the Patriots, I'm hoping they overcome a bad 1st quarter and start kicking the crap out of the Jaguars but so far, it's not looking great. It's currently 14-0 Jags going into the 2nd quarter.

I'm going to go cook some steaks.

I almost wish I had flown today.

The weather today is better than it was yesterday. Not that yesterday was bad but there was no way I was going sightseeing. The cloud bases were right around 2,000 so staying in the pattern at 1,100 was really my only option.

Today I could have done both pattern work and some sightseeing.

Oh well. Fall is coming and that is when the flying is the best.

As for today, it was spent running errands and continuing the Great Basement Purge.

I'm kind of a hoarder when it comes to computer stuff. I save things because I think they might still have some use. I have bags of RAM, stacks of optical drives (CDs and DVDs) and piles of hard drives.

After sifting through all the crap I have, I can say with certainty that I'm pretty sure that no one is ever going to need those token-ring NICs, parallel cables, serial cables or 256meg hard drives I saved.

I threw a lot of things away today but I still have a bunch more to go through.

In the meantime, my wife is happy to see stuff getting tossed. After what we had to at her moms house, having to clean out 50 years worth of "stuff", she would like our kids to not have to go through that.

I agree with her.

The Red Sox got their ass kicked last night but they appear to be trying to make up for it this afternoon.

They are currently leading the Mets 5-3 in the 6th.

One hour in the pattern

I managed to get one hour of pattern time today. I had five full stop landings, one touch & go and one go around. The go around was something I planned in advance and wasn't because something went wrong.  I figure practicing go arounds is a good idea because when I really need to do one, I'd like to be fully aware of what to expect.

My landings were spot on and I was pretty damned happy with everything. I did leave the pattern at one point and climbed up to 2,000 feet but immediately turned around and practiced a pattern entry.

I love flying and today was a good day to fly.

The Red Sox are playing the Mets tonight and I'm kind of hoping they win. Unfortunately their starting pitcher, Hector Velazquez, was a scratch due to an illness and they are starting a kid no one has ever heard of named William Cuevas.

Considering they are up against a pitcher whose nick name if Thor, it could be an interesting game.

I love it when I'm right

The Red Sox won their 100th game on September 12th, just like I said they would.

Okay, so it's not that big of a deal and I did have math on my side but still, I nailed it.

Not much I have to say today. I'm planning on trying to stay awake to see all of the game tonight but that probably won't happen. I'm also planning on eating some dinner at some point.

So how about I stop prattling on about nothing and get to the links:

They have clinched a playoff spot

The Red Sox have won enough games that no matter what happens for the rest of the season, they are guaranteed a playoff spot. I anticipate that they will win the ALEast and the rest of them can fight over the wild card slots.

They currently stand at 99 wins and it is September 12th. Back on August 31st, I predicted they would win their 100th game on September 12th. That means that they have to win tonight or I will be wrong.

I hate it when I'm wrong.

Assuming that the weather dweebs are close to being right, I'm going to try and go flying on Friday.

I haven't been up much lately because the weather seems to hate me. It's either raining, too windy or too damned hot. Friday is looking like there is a very slight chance of spot showers, winds around 4 knots and temps in the upper 70s, lower 80s.

I can fly in that weather but if it's raining, I'll probably call it off.

It's no fun flying in the rain.

The return of Chris Sale

Chris Sale will be pitching against the Blue Jays this evening but not as a "starter". Instead, he will be used in the role of "opener".

This is an interesting concept used by one or two teams where instead of a starting pitcher going 6 or 7 innings, the opening pitcher goes 2 innings and then another long inning guy comes in to goe an additional 4 or 5 innings.

The theory behind it is that you don't burn guys out by having them go 7 innings and they stay fresh and ready for anything. In the case of Sale, he's just coming off the DL and Cora considers this 2 inning start is more of a "test" of his arm.

Hopefully this goes well and the Red Sox win tonights game.

I thought about doing the whole, "Where were you when...." thing but you've seen enough of the reminiscence and 9/11 stories today.

I'll just tell you that I was at work when it happened. I called my wife, told her to go to the nearest ATM and withdraw the max of $350 then be prepared to get the kids.

I watched the towers fall and the Pentagon burn. Then I went home and we explained everything to our kids who were more than aware that something bad was going on.

Then I verified that I was capable of protecting my family if need be.

To this day, I still periodically verify that I am capable of protecting my family if need be.

I hope my sister has started paying attention to Flo and is at least a little prepared. One of my brothers sent her a link to a canoe that was on sale just in case she needed something to float around on.

Well, they didn't get swept.

The Red Sox won last night which means the Astros didn't take all three games. Also, the Yankees lost  last night. That means the Red Sox picked up a full game and they once again have a eight and a half game lead in the ALEast.

The Red Sox are off tonight and tomorrow they start a three game series against the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays aren't playing all that well (the Red Sox have a 33 game lead over them) and I'm hoping the Red Sox win all three games. That would put them over the 100 win mark.

It will be nice to see them with a 100+ win season.

I asked me sister down in North Carolina if she was ready for Florence and she said, "I guess. I haven't been paying a of attention to things. Is it coming this way?"

She's apparently not all that concerned about, or prepared for, the hurricane season.

I'm going to find something to watch on TV.

Barack Obama needs to shut up

I blame Barack Obama and his faithful minions, Clinton, Pelosi, Reid, etc... for the Trump presidency. The reason the voters decided to vote for someone as insane as Donald Trump is because Obama pushed his special agendas on us and treated most of us like morons.

Now Obama has decided that he needs to continue pushing his agenda on us and I think it's going to result in more voters leaning towards Trump.

His recent speeches about the Trump presidency fly in the face of the tradition of the past president not discussing the current president's work.

When Obama was president, he repeatedly said, "I blame the previous administration for [insert problem du' jour here]!" yet Bush never once said a word about it. When he gave a speech, he never criticized or even mentioned Obama. When an interviewer asked him a direct question about Obama, he pointedly said that he wasn't going to talk about the president.

Obama needs to shut up and fade away like every other president before him or the people of this nation will turn against him and his agenda with even more insanity like, oh I don't know, maybe a second term for Trump.

Unfortunately, the democrats are probably going to run Elizabeth Warren in 2020 and that will also result in a second term for Trump.

Warren is a close-minded bigot who has no idea what it's like for most of us. She habitually insults & belittles people, thinks blacks are incapable of taking care of themselves, self-identifies as American Indian and assumes that if a person is white, they had privileges that allowed them to become a productive member of our society.

Remember when Clinton called half the nation "deplorable"? Yea, well Warren recently called every cop and prosecutor in the nation a racist. How do you think that's gonna play out come election time? Warren also claims that blacks are not capable of getting a state issued ID card. She says that if you are required to show ID at the polls, blacks will be excluded because they don't know how to get an ID.

I have been voting since 1976 and so far every vote I've cast has been for the lesser of two evils. Just once before I die, I'd like to find a candidate that I was happy to vote for.

The Patriots played today and in typical New England fashion, they bet the Texans. The final score was 27-20.

Brady looked good, as did Gronkowski. The offensive line held it's own against a strong Texan defense and gave Brady the time he needed to move the ball.

Now if the Red Sox can figure out how to beat the Astros, it will be a good day for us Massachusetts sports fans.

Of course, I won't know if the Red Sox won until tomorrow morning because once again those assholes at ESPN are carrying the game. That means it doesn't start until around 8:30 tonight and during the game, there will be much long-winded "chatting up" of Jessica Mendoza by Vasgersian and Rodriquez as they both try to verbally mate with her.

Those two need to stop trying to get into her pants. It's a bad look for ESPN and baseball in general.

The bullpen needs to get it's shit together

The starter, David Price, did pretty damned well last night, going 6+ innings and giving up no runs. When he left the game, the score was 2-0 in favor of the Red Sox.

The bullpen than proceeded to give up 6 runs and the final score of the game was 6-3 in favor of the Astros.

This is the final month of the season and playoffs are fast approaching. Come October 5th (October 3rd if they really choke and end up in as a wild card), they all need to bring their "A" game and be ready to play because if they have a repeat of last year when they won the ALEast but lost in the ALDS, I will be upset.

I don't want to be upset.

As for today, well, the game is still going on. It's the eighth inning and the score is 5-2 in favor of the Astros.

The starter, Rodriguez, only managed three and a half innings and he gave up 5 runs. The bullpen has actually stepped up and is holding it's own today. Now if the batters would step up and start hitting the damned ball, they might just win this game.

I was going through some stuff in the basement today and found a box of old newspapers that I've saved over the years. Here are two that my dad gave me to hold on to:

Transmission Speed Sensor

Apparently my ABS / AntiSkid system relies on a sensor called the Transmission Speed Sensor. Not only are these sensors something that has to be ordered (it will be in tomorrow), they are also not cheap. I'm not saying they are holy-crap-expensive but they aren't twenty bucks either.

So hopefully the part arrives there early tomorrow morning and they get it installed so I can go get my car before the end of the day.

ABS / AntiSkid requires service

I had an idiot light go on yesterday as I was pulling into my driveway that said I had a problem with my anti-lock brakes.

Since brakes are kind of important, I decided that I needed to get my car to the mechanic so after work today, I dropped it off with them. Unfortunately, my wife got stuck in traffic and didn't pick me up until around 6:00.

After we got home, we had some dinner and then I typed this up. After typing it up, I then proceeded to forget to click the publish button.

What that all means to you is that this is really late and I don't have a lot to say.

The Red Sox and the Yankees are both off today so there will be no change in the ALEast race. With the Yankees loss last night, the Red Sox now have a nine and a half game lead with 21 games left to play.

I'm hoping the Yankees slump a bit and the Red Sox continue winning. That would be a nice way to end the regular season.

While I watch bad television, you can click on these:

They won. Again.

I'm really hoping that the Red Sox win the World Series. Imagine how disappointing it would be for them to win as much as they have all season and then lose it in the end. They have won 97 games this season and there are still 21 games left to play. If they continue playing the way they have been playing, they will win 70% of those 21 games which would give them a regular season record of 111-51.

This afternoon they completed a three game sweep of the Braves and then packed up to head back to Boston. They have tomorrow off and on Friday, they start a lengthy nine game home stretch when they play three games against the Astros, three games against the Blue Jays and three games against the Mets.

The Dog seems to have finally readjusted to a "No one is home so I guess I'll nap all day long" schedule. It took him a few weeks of not having the Small Emergency Backup Dog here to mess with all day long but he's back to his old self now.

The tornado season has begun in Iowa

This evening, my daughter sent me the following text:

First tornado watch of the semester! So glad to be back in the Midwest...

I checked the weather for Ames, Iowa and this is what I saw:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED TORNADO WATCH 368 IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM CDT THIS EVENING FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS IN IOWA THIS WATCH INCLUDES 26 COUNTIES IN CENTRAL IOWA

Then I checked the radar for Ames, Iowa and is what I saw:

As a dad, I can assure you that this type of text message combined with a NWS watch notice and a radar image that shows a line of red blobs causes me some angst. Specially when she is 1,300 miles away....

The Red Sox are once again eight and a half games ahead of the Yankees. I'll be watching the Red Sox play the Braves but I will not be paying attention to the Yankees. They are playing the Athletics at 10:00 tonight and I have no desire to stay up to watch them.

If the Red Sox can win tonight, I'll be able to go to bed with them having a nine game lead in the ALEast.

I would like to go to bed with them having a nine game lead.

Ken "Hawk" Harrelson has decided to finally stop talking.

To be honest with you, I never found Harrelson to be any good at calling baseball games. I never understood the attraction.  He talked for about 30 minutes yesterday and said nothing of interest. He was pretty narcissistic and seemed to think he was the second coming of Lou Gehrig with his, "luckiest man alive" ending.

I was happy when they booted him off Channel 38 back in the 80s because that guy loved to talk about himself.

Now if they can only get rid of most of the ESPN announcers and replace them with guys who want to call a game instead of yap about their playing career....

The Red Sox started a three game series down in Atlanta this afternoon and they managed to beat the Braves 8-2. The Yankees are out west playing the Athletics and as I type this, the Athletics lead the Yankees 4-3 in the fourth.

Hopefully the Athletics can continue their winning ways and beat up on the Yankees over the next few days.

Yesterday was a long day.

We spent Saturday morning running all of our errands and then getting some yard work done. In the afternoon, we headed up to Keene for the annual music festival to watch our youngest and his fellow bandmates close the festival down for the year.

They have quite the following and they play well together but as they get older and start moving in different circles, they play together less and less. I won't be surprised if this is their last festival in Keene.

We didn't get home until after 11:30, which, as you all know, is way past my bedtime so I slept in this morning. Yes sir, I did not get out of bed until well after 6:00.

It was nice.

Today was spent doing some more yard work. Well, my wife did most of the yard work. I did a little of the yard work and then called it a day to go watch baseball

I did manage to mow my back yard and clean out my shed.

Speaking of baseball.

The Red Sox and the Yankees both won yesterday even though I was paying attention to both games via the GameDay cartoon thingee. That means the Red Sox started their Sunday morning still seven and a half games ahead of the Yankees in the ALEast.

As for today, the Red Sox got stomped by the White Sox and the Yankees got stomped by the Tigers so the Red Sox maintain their seven and a half game lead in the ALEast

Speaking of the Yankees, they have a new outfielder an he is a favorite of my Pittsburgh relatives - Andrew McCutchin.

When the Pirates traded Cutch to the Giants, my cousin Paddy and my Aunt Ann had a very sad day. Now the Giants have traded him to the Yankees and I asked Paddy if she was now a Yankees fan. She said she would watch them if they were on but she didn't sound too enthusiastic about it.

She love her Pirates and that will never change.

Really busy day today

I have many things to do today so this will be short and to the point.

The Red Sox lost last night and the Yankees won last night. That means the Red Sox lead in the ALEast is back down to seven and a half games.

Now I'm going to continue doing my things.

While I do that, here's a few links you can click on:
