Easily offended people offend me.

I was reading all the stories about how they are erasing US history by removing all vestiges of the Confederacy. They are taking down statues, renaming monuments and banning the Stars and Bars because people are offended by them.

Here's what I think. I think that the people who are calling for the removal of the Stars and Bars because it offends them are the same people that are burning the Stars and Stripes, thus offending most Americans.

Think about that for a minute. They are claiming the right to offend most people by burning our national flag but they don't want to be offended by a flag that represented almost half the population of the country at one point in our history.

I'm not sure why people are suddenly offended by the Stars and Bars. It's been around for more than a hundred years and is usually used in the Good Ol' Boy context. In other words, it's a redneck/hillbilly kind of thing usually associated with a lot of beer drinking and the yelling of the word "yeehaw!" at the top of your lungs.

The popular word that these EOPs (Easily Offended People) use is "marginalized" but I'm not sure who or what is being put into a position of less power by a flag. They claim that the flag represents the oppression of blacks but I'm pretty certain the Emancipation Proclamation took care of that.

Just to be clear, I'm not a fan of the Stars and Bars. Hell, I'm not even a hillbilly. What really bothers me about the whole thing is that we, as a nation, are in the process of erasing a significant portion of our history and that is just wrong. Just because you don't like history doesn't give you the right to erase it.

I guess my real question is what are we going to erase next? What is the next piece of history that someone is going to decide does not meet their agenda and needs to be eliminated?

I personally think it's a bad thing that we are in the process of manipulating history. It makes us no different than Joseph Goebbels and the Nazi propaganda machine that manipulated history to suit their plans.

And if you think that turned out well for anyone, you need to stop erasing history and start reading it.

There once was a pretty bright Spaniard named George Santayana who said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

We should heed his words.

The Red Sox are on a travel day and tomorrow they are back in Boston where they kick off a three-game series against the Rangers.

After their embarrassing performance against the Athletics, I'm really hoping this series goes more in their favor.

As it stands right now, they are barely holding their heads above the .500 mark and if they drop below that, it puts them into the "Wow! Those guys suck!" category.

No one wants to be in that category.
